_Comrade of the Revolution_, edited and introduced by Monolo De Santos and Vijay Prashad, comprises of seven speeches delivered by Castro to the people of Cuba at various junctures of the crisis from 1967 to 2005. These include the speech he gave at the solemn ceremony in memory of Ernesto Che Guevara, the speech about the 1970 sugar harvest during the year of the Ten Million, the speech at the memorial service for the victims of the act of terrorism against the Cubana airline’s plane destroyed in flight, speeches delivered months before the fall of USSR, the speeches that expose the inhumanity of the neoliberal era, and also the speeches which explain the inevitability of the revolutionary process.

I was also invited to speak at some of the seminars, as part of which began my search for various archival sources to see how the rebellion was understood during the colonial period. Immediately I was amazed by not only the clarity and independent thinking of early Communists who wrote and spoke about the rebellion, but also by the courageous anti-colonial consciousness of the leaders of class struggle. Within a few months, my research culminated in the book.

For the past four years, organising the student movement was challenging but inspiring at the same time. We had to face the pandemic, state repression, increased neoliberal activities worldwide, and communal riots. But we are proud to say, SFI did not cease its organisational responsibilities even once during this period. The hard times made us more robust, advanced and creative.

*_[Trigger Warning: Suicide]_*

Delhi University students are forced to struggle against a range of problems on a daily basis, due to the administration’s lack of interest in dealing with them. This includes the university not disbursing scholarships on time, pushing students from marginalised backgrounds to extreme financial difficulties; the university not providing accommodation to students, leading to students renting out highly expensive and privately owned places outside. Aishwarya Reddy, a student of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, who died of suicide during the second lockdown period left a note revealing how the delay in the disbursement of her scholarship money impacted her life badly, and how the online education system, imposed all of a sudden, left students like her hopeless.

https://studentstruggle.in/resistance-intensifies-in-west-bengal/

Today, as the entire country faces an onslaught on its democratic spirit and a cementing of fascistic ideals, West Bengal braves a dual attack – unleashed by the government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the centre and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government at the state. The Left in the state has been the target of severe violence by the TMC for over a decade and a half. This has only intensified after they formed a government in 2011. However, resistance to the TMC is being built consistently and the recent activities of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in West Bengal are a reflection of this.

“Educate All, Employ All, Unite All” is the slogan raised by the 17th All India Conference of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). Even after seven decades of independence, India has not been able to ensure that all its children can go to school.

Prof. Irfan Habib is one of the world’s greatest Marxist historians. He has been a leading voice of the country’s secular and democratic ethos. On the 13th of November 2022, at the age of 91, Prof. Habib inaugurated the Unit Conference of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Uttar Pradesh. The SFI has now concluded its 17th All India Conference, and Prof. Habib was the inaugurator of the SFI’s 4th All India Conference in Mumbai in 1981, and three decades ago, he was an active member of the organisation too. His legendary life, therefore, is also the story of India’s student movement.

*This write up arose out of Prof. Habib’s inaugural address at the SFI-AMU Unit Conference and a conversation that followed between him and Nitheesh Narayanan, the Editor of this journal.*
