Saddam and Trump's shared delusion

On the 46th anniversary of Saddam's invasion, the writer draws parallels with Trump's war on Iran: both believed a weakened Iran would quickly submit, both committed war crimes against civilians, and both miscalculated the Iranian people. Gulf states that backed Saddamโ€”and now host US basesโ€”have again bet on "the losing horse." Saddam died humiliated; Trump will live with Iran's shadow.

Beyond fabric and colors: Sovereignty, national identity and the dignity of the state

A national flag is a legal manifestation of state sovereignty, not just a symbol. International lawโ€”through the Vienna Conventionsโ€”recognizes flags in diplomatic and consular contexts, imposing duties on host states. While no universal rule criminalizes every insult to a flag, certain conduct may engage state responsibility. The writer argues that defending Iran's flag requires legal precision, not just rhetoric.
