⚖️ Labour Laws – The Payment of Wages Act, 1936

📅 Enacted: 23 April 1936
🎯 Purpose: To ensure timely & full payment of wages + prevent illegal deductions & delays by employers.

🧭 Objectives of the Act

1️⃣ Ensure timely and complete wage payment
2️⃣ Stop unauthorized deductions
3️⃣ Maintain transparency in wage records
4️⃣ Provide legal remedy for wage disputes
5️⃣ Promote financial security & fairness for workers

📚 Key Sections (Quick View)

🔹 Sec 1(4)-(5): Applies to factories, railways, notified establishments
🔹 Sec 1(6): Wage ceiling – ₹24,000/month (↑ from ₹18,000 in 2017)
🔹 Sec 3: Employer responsible for wage payment (even via contractor)
🔹 Sec 4: Wage period ≤ 1 month
🔹 Sec 5: Payment deadlines
  ▪ Within 7 days (< 1000 employees)
  ▪ Within 10 days (≥ 1000 employees)
  ▪ Within 2 days of termination
🔹 Sec 6: Pay in cash/cheque/bank (need consent)
🔹 Sec 7: Only authorized deductions – fines, absence, loss, PF, insurance, etc.
🚫 Unauthorized deductions = Illegal
🔹 Sec 8: Fines → written notice + used for employee welfare
🔹 Sec 13A: Maintain wage records
🔹 Sec 14 & 14A: Inspectors can verify records
🔹 Sec 15: Claims for delay or unlawful deductions → Compensation up to 10×
🔹 Sec 16: Group complaints allowed
🔹 Sec 18: Authority has civil-court powers
🔹 Sec 20: Penalties for violation
🔹 Sec 25: Display summary of Act at workplace
🔹 Sec 25A: Process to pay wages of deceased employees

🧾 Key Amendments

📍 1975 – Allowed cheque/bank transfer (with consent)
📍 2017 – Consent not required if notified by govt
📍 2018/19 – Wage ceiling ↑ to ₹24,000
📍 2020 – Merged under Code on Wages 2019 (partly in force)
