Severe injuries from debris: Heavy objects like cars or building parts become lethal projectiles, causing crush injuries, amputations, or internal damage. In the 2004 Indian Ocean event (though waves were larger overall), debris contributed to many bruises and wounds.
Overall lethality: Waves of 10 feet or more are very destructive and can cause many deaths or injuries, even in events not classified as "major."Most on-shore tsunamis are under 10 feet, but when they reach this height, they pose extreme risks to coastal communities.
In all cases, secondary risks include hypothermia from cold water exposure, infections from contaminated floodwaters, and psychological trauma. Evacuation to higher ground is critical, as tsunamis can strike with little warning. For safety, never approach the shore to observe a potential tsunami—waves move faster than a person can run. If you're in a tsunami-prone area, heed official warnings from sources like NOAA.

You may have seen reports, or even haunting images, of whales washing ashore after the massive 8.8 earthquake. It’s a painful sight—these magnificent, intelligent creatures stranded and vulnerable.
People are asking why? And the truth is, there isn’t just one answer—but science gives us clues.
When an earthquake of this scale strikes beneath the ocean, it doesn’t just shake the ground—it shakes the entire underwater world. Tremendous seismic energy pulses through the sea, releasing deep vibrations and sounds that can confuse and even harm marine life.
Whales rely on sound to navigate, to find food, to stay connected with each other. Imagine their world—a world of gentle echoes and underwater songs—suddenly torn by a deafening burst of chaos. That alone can disorient them.
The ocean floor may have shifted—trenches collapsed, magnetic fields warped, familiar routes changed in an instant. And in their panic, these creatures may have fled—but in the wrong direction. They didn’t beach themselves out of confusion alone—some may have been trying to escape.
In rare cases, toxic gases from underwater landslides or pressure shifts might even have harmed them physically, or triggered mass stranding.
So while we mourn the destruction above the waterline, let us also hold space for the silent toll beneath the waves. These strandings are not just accidents—they are echoes of a world turned upside down.
Let us extend our compassion not only to the families in danger, but to the lives we rarely see—the whales, the coral, the ecosystems that suffer alongside us.
And may we continue to beg God for mercy—for the waves to calm, for the coastlines to hold, and for life, in all its forms, to find its way back to peace.
