Japan Halts Import of Indian Mangoes (2026) – UPSC Notes
Why in News?
Japan has temporarily suspended imports of Indian mangoes after identifying lapses in pest-control and export-treatment procedures at certain Indian export facilities.
Key Highlights
1. Reason for the Ban
Japanese quarantine authorities found deficiencies in pest-control protocols at Indian export treatment centres.
Concerns were raised regarding compliance with Japan's stringent phytosanitary requirements.
The suspension is precautionary to prevent the entry of pests into Japan.
2. Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT)
A non-chemical quarantine treatment used for exported fruits.
Fruits are exposed to controlled hot and humid air.
Helps eliminate pests, especially fruit flies.
Mandatory for mango exports from India to Japan.
3. Mango Varieties Affected
Alphonso
Kesar
Langra
Banganapalli
Chausa
Mallika
Historical Background
In 1986, Japan banned Indian mango imports due to concerns over fruit fly infestation.
The ban remained in force for nearly 20 years.
After implementation of Vapour Heat Treatment protocols, Japan resumed imports in 2006.
The 2026 suspension is the first major disruption in mango trade after two decades.
Significance for India
Japan is a premium market for Indian mango exports.
The ban comes during the peak mango export season (April–June).
It may adversely affect:
Mango farmers
Exporters
Supply chains
Foreign exchange earnings from agricultural exports
Important Concepts
Phytosanitary Measures
Measures designed to protect plant health and prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
Essential for international agricultural trade.
Quarantine
Inspection and treatment procedures applied to imported agricultural products before entry into a country.
Fruit Fly
One of the most destructive pests affecting fruit crops.
Many countries follow a zero-tolerance approach towards fruit fly contamination.
Challenges Highlighted
Weak quality-control mechanisms in export chains.
Need for strict compliance with international SPS standards.
Inadequate monitoring of export-treatment facilities.
Risk of losing access to premium export markets.
Way Forward
Upgrade Vapour Heat Treatment facilities.
Strengthen inspection and certification mechanisms.
Improve traceability and quality assurance systems.
Enhance coordination between exporters, APEDA, and regulatory authorities.
Ensure strict adherence to international phytosanitary standards.

MQEP DAY 1 Answer.pdf
Yesterday, we commenced our MQEP journey, and it was truly encouraging to witness so many students attempting answer writing for the very first time. Taking the first step is often the most difficult part, and the enthusiasm shown by students reflects their commitment to hard work, consistency, and continuous improvement.

At Pragati Mentorship, we firmly believe that success in competitive examinations is built through disciplined daily efforts rather than occasional bursts of preparation. The willingness of students to embrace answer writing from Day 1 is a positive sign that we are moving in the right direction.

Sharing the Model Answer of Day 1 to give everyone a glimpse of the standards, approach, and quality we aim to develop over the coming days. Let this serve as both a learning resource and a benchmark for self-evaluation.

The journey has just begun. Stay consistent, trust the process, and keep improving every single day.
