The Blockchain Network

So, how do Blockchain-based systems such as Bitcoin and Ethereum validate transactions in the absence of a centralised authority?

Many parties in the blockchain network are constantly monitoring to verify that each transaction is genuine. Each participant is represented by a computer that has a copy of the blockchain. Each time a new block is introduced, these parties cross-reference their copy of the blockchain. The digital record is "decentralised" because this validation is dependent on several individuals.

In order for a new block to be included, 51 percent of all blockchain network participants must confirm that the new block is not fake. Once a block has been validated as a valid transaction, it is added to the blockchain copy of each participant.
By requiring the majority of participants to authenticate a new transaction, the blockchain eliminates the need for a central authority and automates transaction completion, lowering transaction fees while maintaining a high level of security.

Key Terms:

Blockchain Network:
The terms blockchain network and blockchain are interchangeable. They represent the complete blockchain, from the structure to the network to which it belongs.

Decentralization is the idea that participants collaborate to validate transactions without depending on a centralised authority.

A participant is a client who possesses a copy of the blockchain and validates transactions throughout the network.

What exactly are Blockchain Blocks?

Blocks are the building blocks of a blockchain, just as bricks are the building blocks of a construction.
A block contains transaction details as well as other critical characteristics about the block's creation, such as the time it was produced and other unique information. To construct a block, we must first have a record that we want to store.

A block's properties are as follows:

Timestamp: The moment the block is produced defines its position on the blockchain.

Transaction Data: The data that will be safely saved in the block.

Hash: A one-of-a-kind code created by merging all of the contents of the block itself — also known as a digital fingerprint.

Previous Hash: Each block contains a reference to the block before the hash. This is what distinguishes the blockchain because if a block is tampered with, the connection will be broken.

Hashing

Hashing is a cryptographic application that is essential to the blockchain's construction.

It is a method for producing an apparently random yet calculated string of letters and numbers from any input.

A hash function is used to do this.

Consider a hash function to be a machine that converts an item, such as an apple, into a random combination of letters and numbers, such as "3b543cg."

The hash of the input, the apple, is known as the output ("3b543cg").

If you feed the machine two apples instead of one, it will produce a different hash (for example, "37g6df2").

Because there are so many different types of computers, the generated hash changes from one to the next.

Similarly, there are several hash functions to choose from.

Blockchain employs a cryptographic hash algorithm, which means that the result is both random and deterministic.

As a result, the same input will always provide the same hash.

Key Terms:

Deterministic
: The same input will always result in the same outcome, but that output cannot result in the original input.

Hash: A string of letters and digits generated from a given input.

Hash Function: A function that takes a random-sized input, hashes it, and produces an apparently random output of a fixed size, also known as the hash.

The Genesis Block

To summarise, a blockchain is identical to a permanent book of records in that it maintains an exact, unchangeable record of all data, or transactions, recorded in chronological order.

Each block contains a reference to the preceding hash. This is the method through which blocks are "chained" together.

When the contents of a block are tampered with, the hash of the block changes and the chain breaks, making it difficult to successfully tamper with any one piece of the chain.

Because every block in the blockchain has a reference to the preceding block, the initial block is distinct from the others.

It's referred to as the Genesis Block.

The Genesis Block, on the other hand, does not have a block before it.

It wouldn't make sense to keep a prior hash within it.

To address this small problem, the previous hash value is often hard-coded into the Genesis Block with a default value of zero.

Key Phrases:

Genesis Block
: The first block on the blockchain is known as the genesis block, and it is often hard-coded into the blockchain structure.

As the first block on the blockchain, it lacks a connection to a prior hash.

Congratulations! 👏
You've now learnt the fundamentals of blockchain technology. The following is a review of key terminology that you may wish to learn to help cement your understanding of the blockchain.

Let us recall the vocabulary we learned.

Blockchain: A blockchain is a permanent and accurate record of transactions that have been verified and stored in chronological order.

A block is a single transaction or piece of data that is stored within the blockchain.

Blockchain Network: The phrases blockchain network and blockchain are interchangeable.
They represent the entire blockchain, from the structure to the network to which it belongs.

Decentralization is the idea that users collaborate to validate transactions rather than depending on a central authority.

A participant is a client who possesses a copy of the blockchain and validates transactions throughout the network.

Deterministic: The same input will always result in the same outcome, but that output will never result in the same input.

Hash: A fixed-length sequence made up of a random mix of letters and digits generated from an arbitrary-sized input.

Hash Function: A function that accepts an input of any size, hashes it, and returns a random output of any size, commonly known as the hash.
