Good Morning world!
Worldcoin recently published the first part of a series on Decentralization for the project that covers governance, development, and operations.
Worldcoin’s mission is ambitious, and decentralization has always been a key part of its success. Building the largest global financial and identity network can't happen without a motivated and diverse community.
The creation of the nonprofit Worldcoin Foundation is a significant step towards decentralization, and this process will keep moving forward in a natural and progressive way.
Why now? Two realities are converging that result in an increased need for a fundamentally universal financial and identity network that must be both privacy-preserving and decentralized.
The first reality is, despite significant advances in technology, more than 4.4 billion people worldwide either don’t have a legal identity or have one that can’t be digitally verified.
This is a major stumbling block for accessing financial services.
The second is the pervasiveness of AI (ChatGPT, Bard, Bing, etc) that has caused a new set of challenges to emerge—i.e. the ability to distinguish between humans and AI in the digital world.
Worldcoin’s initial focus is on key fundamentals—the building blocks for further decentralization. There are three main areas being targeted:
🏛️ Governance
🧑💻 Development
🪩 Operations
The development of the Worldcoin protocol was led by Tools for Humanity (TFH), a global hardware and software company building tools for and helping support the Worldcoin protocol.
Worldcoin’s longer term mission, however, goes far beyond TFH.
TFH helped create the independent, nonprofit Worldcoin Foundation to grow the global community.
The Foundation will be Worldcoin’s steward, creating grant programs, taking ownership of key assets and establishing decentralized governance processes.
A key to fostering a thriving developer ecosystem is open-sourcing Worldcoin’s source code. A number of the protocol-related Github repositories are already open source, and the newest version of the Orb design was recently opened.
TFH has also partnered with ETHGlobal on multiple in-person and online hackathons, including ETHNewYork, ETHMexicoCity, HackMoney and ETHOnline.
In addition to more ETH events, Worldcoin’s source code will continue to be opened over time, along with establishing community calls (e.g. Ethereum All Core Devs Meeting) to ensure transparency & the creation of a “World Improvement Proposal” (WIP) process.
The Worldcoin architecture consists of backend processes and market operations teams. Worldcoin’s plan is to open-source the software associated with the backend processes and publish the hardware specs for these stacks.
We anticipate multiple groups, especially those associated with third-party Orb development, will implement their own market operations, with support from the Worldcoin Foundation, focused on geographies that haven't yet been reached.
Conclusion: Worldcoin has made important progress thanks to all of your community contributions — but the project has a long way to go.
Moving the mission forward will require the help of many teams and individuals from all around the world.

AN INTRODUCTION TO ZERO-KNOWLEDGE MACHINE LEARNING (ZKML)
Zero-Knowledge machine learning (ZKML) is a field of research and development that has been making waves in cryptography circles recently. But what is it and why is it useful?
Generating zero-knowledge proofs is very computationally intensive, about 100 times as expensive as the original computation. This means that there are some computations for which it is infeasible to compute zero-knowledge proofs because the time it'd take to create them on the best hardware available makes them impractical. However, advancements in the field of cryptography, hardware, and distributed systems in recent years have allowed zero-knowledge proofs to become feasible for ever more intensive computations. These advancements have allowed for the creation of protocols that can use proofs of intensive computations, thus expanding the design space for new applications.
In the context of Worldcoin, World ID users would be able to self-custody their biometrics in the encrypted storage of their mobile device, download the ML model for IrisCode generation and create a zero-knowledge proof locally that their IrisCode was created successfully.
They'd also be able to permissionlessly insert the IrisCode into the WorldID protocol without having to visit an orb again. It could also prove that the orb is running fraud and sybil resistant checks during sign-up and show it to the user to verify that it is a secure orb.
This will also help with Orb security. Currently, the Orb enforces several fraud and tampering detection mechanisms in its trusted environment. However, we could create a zero-knowledge proof that these mechanisms are live when the image was taken and the IrisCode was generated in order to provide better liveness guarantees to the Worldcoin protocol since we’d have complete certainty that these mechanisms would be running throughout the IrisCode generation process.
These are just a few of the many potential use cases which we mention in the full blog post!
ZKML is a really exciting technology and we are thankful to the many members of the wider community for their contributions and enthusiasm.

Happy Friday everyone!
Just published another major blog post Debunking the Most Common Myths About Worldcoin.
The Worldcoin protocol is both ambitious in its scope and complex in its execution. It involves custom hardware, blockchain, proof-of-personhood, biometrics, privacy protections, global operations, zero-knowledge proofs and much more—all with a goal of building the world’s largest decentralized identity and financial network as a public utility.
This complexity can—and should—provoke curiosity and healthy skepticism, which fosters open dialogue, accountability and trust building. In the absence of factual information, however, it can also lead to misunderstanding.
So let’s address some of the most common myths and misconceptions about Worldcoin, and share important information about them.
Myth #1: Worldcoin stores everyone’s iris images in a database: This is false. The Worldcoin protocol uses biometrics to establish proof of unique personhood, and images are promptly deleted unless specifically opted in by the person signing up.
Myth #2: Worldcoin only operates in developing countries: This is false. Worldcoin was created to give everyone access to the global economy, and it operates in a wide range of countries. Such diversity is important because, in order to equally serve as many people as possible, the technology must be able to work even in remote and often underserved locations.
Myth #3: Worldcoin is a closed, centralized project: This is false. Decentralization has always been a key part of achieving Worldcoin’s mission, and important progress has been and continues to be made on this front.
Learn more about Worldcoin's work towards transparency and openness at the full post on the Worldcoin blog.

Hi everyone!
Your humble Community Manager is back after an epic week off and here to continue the work of inspiring the world to create a secure, private, global, decentralized identity system with Worldcoin.
Did you know that more than 4.4 billion people worldwide either don’t have a legal identity or have one that can’t be digitally verified?
Obviously, this is a major stumbling block when it comes to accessing financial services. Without a true ID, people can't open banks, make peer to peer transactions, or participate in the digital economy. This means businesses never get started, children lose access to education, and families remain stuck in a cycle of poverty and under-education.
Worldcoin is here to change that. By directly verifying humanity via the Orb and granting access to the World App, Worldcoin is on a mission to connect the world and empower those who need us most.
We are so glad you're here with us. This is still only the start.

Good morning!
Here to report that Worldcoin is about to become major news around the world. 🪩
Early this morning, the venerable site TechCrunch published a deep dive into the How, What, and Why of Worldcoin:
Worldcoin, cofounded by Sam Altman, is betting the next big thing in AI is proving you are human.
"Fake virtual identities are nothing new. The ability to so easily create them has been both a boon for social media platforms — more “users” — and a scourge, tied as they are to the spread of conspiracy theories, distorted discourse and other societal ills.
Still, Twitter bots are nothing compared with what the world is about to experience, as any time spent with ChatGPT illustrates. Flash forward a few years and it will be impossible to know if someone is communicating with another mortal or a neural network.
Sam Altman knows this. Altman is the cofounder and the CEO of ChatGPT parent OpenAI and has long had more visibility than most into what’s around the corner. It’s why more than three years ago, he conceived of a new company that could serve first and foremost as proof-of-personhood. Called Worldcoin, its three-part mission — to create a global ID, a global currency, and an app that enables payment, purchases and transfers using its own token, along with other digital assets and traditional currencies — is as ambitious as it is technically complicated, but the opportunity is also vast."

"If I could stop time and just do what I enjoy the most, I would do research."
Our noble leader Alex Blania just appeared on the Swisspreneur Podcast Episode 305: Defy (DeFi) for Global Financial Empowerment!
This is an awesome opportunity to learn about Worldcoin straight from the source, and to learn more about our epic CEO.
Here's the episode description from the Swisspreneur website:
Alex Blania is the co-founder and CEO at Worldcoin, a startup issuing a new, decentralized global currency that will be distributed fairly to as many people as possible. He holds a BSc with a double major in Physics and Mechanical Engineering from the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and was previously a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light.
In 2020 he co-founded Worldcoin together with Max Novendstern and Sam Altman, with the goal of connecting everyone to the global economy as fast as possible. Worldcoin plans to issue every single person on Earth one free share, which you keep in a non-custodial crypto wallet purely based on smart contracts. With it, you will be able to buy other tokens/stablecoin, buy more Worldcoin, send coins to your friends, and pay for goods and services.
When building Worldcoin, the first problem the founders had to face was that of identity: How do you issue everyone an equal identity that is pseudonymous and privacy-preserving? The answer was biometrics, which allow you to prove that you’re an unique human without actually revealing who you are. The Worldcoin co-founders have built their own biometrics device. Without having solved this issue, Worldcoin might have possibly been able to operate in regions like Europe and North America, but the incentive to attack the system would be very high.
Another issue that they will have to tackle in the pursuit of their vision is the lack of access to smartphones in certain parts of the world. For this, they draw inspiration from Safaricom, in Kenya, which has through their digital banking platform Mpesa allowed an entire country to gradually switch to digital payments, which can also be made via SMS – i.e., without a smartphone. Worldcoin does not, however, plan to charge Safaricom’s high fees of 8%.
They have yet to undergo their global launch and are currently running field tests in many locations around the world.
Go check it out, and share it with your friends and colleagues!

Today is the day.
The debut of World ID and the World ID SDK.
World ID is a new privacy-first decentralized identity protocol. It enables seamless sign-in to websites, mobile apps and crypto dapps, while proving you’re a unique and real person without sharing personal data like names, emails, etc.
World ID supports multiple types of personhood verifications. At launch, this includes phone number verification for easy access to anyone with a smartphone and Orb biometric verification for extreme accuracy.
Early access for mobile, web and crypto apps to the World ID SDK is available now at http://docs.worldcoin.org/waitlist
As momentum continues to build for Worldcoin, it’s important to remember that these are still the early days and there is much left to be done as the project graduates from its Beta phase.
Development of the World ID Protocol and SDK will continue with upcoming functionality such as authentication powered by on-device ZKML, alternative personhood verifications including ZK KYC, and generic identity credentials with support for selective disclosures and attestations. More details to come over the next weeks and months.
If you’re passionate about private digital identity and want to help shape the future of World ID, please consider joining a team in the ecosystem, supporting Semaphore and WalletConnect which enables pieces of World ID, or contributing directly on Discord and GitHub.
In the meantime, we’re excited to hear the community’s feedback on this initial preview and to see what developers around the world build with World ID.

Good morning!
On the heels of yesterday's massive World ID announcement (see above), we are excited to share two events today where audiences will have an opportunity to get an inside take on how we got to this point and where we go from here.
First, at 3pm UTC, Tiago Sada and Miguel Piedrafita will be speaking live with ETHGlobal & answering questions about our new privacy-first, decentralized, global identity protocol on the https://ethglobal.tv/ platform.
Then shortly after, we will take this convo home to Discord for our very first Worldcoin Discord Stages event right here at 4pm UTC. This Q+A will be moderated by yours truly, and feature Miguel Piedrafita, flywill — and, rumor has it, the noble leader himself Alex Blania. Write your questions or comments in the event chat and we'll get to as many as we can.
Absolutely stoked to be here with you all and proud of how far we have come.
The beginning is near. 🪩

This morning, top crypto news site The Defiant is highlighting how Worldcoin's identity-focused work forms an essential counterpoint to the rise of AI that can effectively emulate human speech and knowledge production.
"This week Sam Altman’s OpenAI released a new iteration of its viral product which replaces human functions with robots, while Worldcoin, another venture co-founded by Altman, launched a project that aims to make sure robots can’t impersonate humans.
Worldcoin, a project which aims to build digital identity via biometrics stored on-chain, on Tuesday launched World ID, a protocol that aims to provide tools for developers to prove that there is a real person behind a digital action. OpenAI, which developed the AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT, released a major upgrade, GPT-4, on the same day.
World ID runs on Ethereum and stands to potentially give developers working in crypto a new way to establish whether there is a real person behind a transaction. The absence of an established identity has held back many aspects of crypto like voting on a per person basis, establishing credit scores, and preventing gaming of reward schemes like airdrops.
Worldcoin may prove to be a way to counteract some of the issues which may soon arise from AI-created content and social media accounts. Misinformation has already become a contentious issue after the United States’ 2016 presidential election — if AI can soon be programmed to spin up social media accounts and post false content, the technology stands to ratchet the problem up more than a few notches."
The world is beginning to get it:
World ID, Worldcoin, and the World App are essential pieces to the future of secure, decentralized digital identity.

Sam Altman wants to give you crypto to scan your eyeballs. Can he get 8 billion people stare into a futuristic orb to prove they're…
Can Worldcoin get billions of people to stare into an orb and prove they're not A.I. bots?

WHY DOES WORLDCOIN SCAN IRISES? 👁
It’s because we aim to maintain data integrity not just at a million person scale, but a billion person scale.
Unlike other forms of biometric data, iris recognition technology is capable of distinguishing between individuals on a whole-humanity level.
In this new article, learn how the teams building the Worldcoin protocol consider different operating modes & evaluate the expected failure rates as the user base grows.
Super fascinating, highly technical stuff.
Enjoy. 🔮

Hi everyone! 🪩
Hope you're enjoying this weekend wherever you are on Earth.
Today we are sharing something that is not strictly Worldcoin-related, but is very much connected to the larger Worldcoin mission:
A fascinating conversation on the Lex Fridman podcast featuring Worldcoin co-founder Sam Altman just went live, which centered around his work with OpenAI in general, and ChatGPT in particular.
However, around 1:40 in, they held brief discussion about AI driving the need for UBI — and Sam dropped a mention of Worldcoin's potential to make that possible. All in all, it's a very interesting conversation, and a great way to spend some time on this lazy Sunday.
This only the beginning. Glad you're here. 🔮

The Worldcoin tide keeps rising. 🌊
In response to Elon Musk’s Monday tweet calling for exclusive, paid social media to deal with the growing bot problem, leading business media outlet Bloomberg published this article on Tuesday morning, proposing Worldcoin and World ID as the most sensible solution.
And it is.
No other technology can verify authentic humanity while maintaining privacy, security, and anonymity.
Among the many challenges raised by AI, sybil social media attacks are one of the most vexing - and Worldcoin solves them, along with many other problems to boot.
