ለአርኪቴክቶች እና ለከተማ ፕላነሮች ምክረ ሃሳብ "የዝሆን ጆሮ ይስጠኝ" ያለው የባህል እና ቱሪዝም ሚንስቴር ከሜክሲኮ ወደቄራ በሚወስደው መንገድ ገነት ሆቴል ያለበት ቦታ ላይ "መሶብ ማማ (tower)" ብሎ የሰየመውን የመስተዋት "መሶበወርቅ" ሊገነባ ዝግጅት መጨረሱን የተለያዩ ሚዲያዎች ዘግበዋል። (ከዚህ ቀደም የተለያዩ የዘርፉ ባለሙያዎች ከግምት እንዲገቡ ያሳሰቧቸው ጉዳዮች በሙሉ ታልፈዋል)

ከኪነ ሕንጻ፣ ከከተማ ፕላን እና ከሌሎች የምህንድስና ሳይንስ እሳቤዎች ሊታዩ የሚገባቸውን የቅርጽ (form)፣ የምጣኔ (proportion)፣ ተገቢነት (context)፣ ... ወዘተ ላይ የሰከነ እና አጥጋቢ የባለሙያዎች ውይይት ሳይደረግበት አዲስ አበባ ላይ ከሰማይ የወደቀ (fallen from the sky) የመሰለ "ከአፍሪካ አንደኛ" ለማለት ብቻ ሕንጻ ለማቆም በመጣደፍ የምናተርፈው የስኬታችን ተምሳሌት የሆነ ማማ ሳይሆን ያለመደማመጣችን ምስክር ሃውልት እንዳይሆን ያሳስበኛል።

Architectural tv program

AEA corporate members met for a consultation on the draft construction registration proclamation and regulation that is prepared by CWRA under the Ministry of Urban Development and Construction.

The members dismissed the draft as inadequate to transform the building sector in Ethiopia that is in a dire need of a Paradigm Shift. The discussion urged for the earliest adoption by the Ministry of the AEA Policy on Registration/ Licensing/ Certification of the Practice of Architecture that was endorsed by the 15th AEA General Assembly. This document is compatible with international standards with regards to the practice of architecture.

One of the details of the draft is that it still considers different levels of category for office practice; which is keeping the status quo that has contributed to the current embarrassing state of architecture in Ethiopia. The system evaluates offices that practice architecture based mainly on material (capital) accumulation rather than excellence in design capabilities...

... and the professionals’ qualification. As an example offices are categorized by the number of vehicles they own, the number of tables and chairs they have, the size (in area) of the office space, number of printers and copiers, rather than any qualitative attribute like past project experience, measurable staff capacity, continuing professional development/ CPD points acquired, quality management systems, ethical conduct track record, mentorship, etc.

This type of categorization for design firms is unique to Ethiopia and does not exist in any of the countries in Africa, Europe, Asia or the Americas nor is there any evidence that it has contributed to better architecture in Ethiopia.

The current office category system is defacto abandoned when almost all of AEA’s corporate members are actually category 1 firms. This is the same for good majority of non member consultancy firms. It was discussed that the current category system has become a breeding ground for several unethical practices and unfair competition.

The discussion also noted that the current system has resulted in a weaker architecture practice industry as compared to those in neighboring countries, making our members vulnerable to unfair competition as the service industry opens up later this year to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Our members will be challenged to compete internationally framed with prohibiting regulation locally; this includes venturing out to regional markets.

In the discussion members argued that AEA’s registration policy eventually encourages healthy competition and makes room for new start ups and practices. It’s endorsement will result in massive jobs for architects who will either open their own practice or be employed in the new practices that will be set up without the requirements of all the material wealth that is currently required but is completely unnecessary for a Robust Practice in Architecture.

Equally argued was that AEA’s registration policy subscribes professional qualification for architecture graduates to actually practice as architects. This includes, a degree from an accredited school of architecture, min. years of practical training (experience) under a mentor (senior architect), passing a qualification exam and good moral character.
The meeting also discussed on progressive transition from the existing system to the long over due AEA Policy on Registration/ Licensing/ Certification that is sure to Transform architecture and the Building Industry as a whole in Ethiopia.

The next level of consultation shall be with AEA (individual) members.

Dear architect,

As you are well aware the concern over Covid-19 in our country is building up by the day following the very fast spread of the virus in many countries.

Speculations for our country can be quite catastrophic. It’s one of those times for our country that requires companionship, cooperation, and collaboration to get through the danger that we are faced with.

It goes without saying that the need for our expertise as an architect working in collaboration with others is ever more necessary.

The AEA Executive Committee has mandated a task force called ‘AEA action against Covid-19’ to assist the Ministry of Health combat the spread of the virus in Ethiopia. Following this, the plan is to mobilize volunteering members to participate in this initiative that is within their technical capabilities, remotely and/ or otherwise.
