According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations, the standard CTS cheque books currently in use will change from December 31, 2026.
New cheque books featuring updated security standards will come into effect from January 1, 2027.
1. New Cheque Book Changes & Features
* Alpha-Numeric Code: Until now, cheque numbers consisted solely of digits (numerics). Under the new rules, an alphanumeric code combining numbers and letters will be introduced to enhance security. This code will integrate the bank, branch, regional, and zonal codes.
* MICR Number Change: The Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) number at the bottom of the cheque will also transition to an alphanumeric format.
* Advanced UV Lighting Code: A special code will be located beneath the account number on the new cheques. It will be visible only under ultraviolet (UV) light, making it virtually impossible to produce counterfeit cheques.
* RBI Connectivity: Every leaf (cheque page) in the new cheque books will be directly connected to the Reserve Bank of Indiaโs system.
2. Validity of Old Cheques (Restrictions)
* Up to โน50,000 Only: From January 1, 2027, old CTS cheques will be valid only for transactions up to โน50,000.
* For amounts exceeding โน50,000, issuing cheques with the new alphanumeric code will be mandatory.
3. Precautions When Writing a Cheque
* Do Not Use Gel Pens: Gel pens must not be used on cheques; write using only a standard ballpoint pen.
* No Overwriting or Corrections: Do not strike through or write over names, dates, or amounts. Any overwriting will invalidate the cheque.
* Cheque Bounce Rules (Section 138 โ NI Act): If a cheque is rejected due to insufficient funds, signature mismatch, or overwriting, it falls under the definition of a "Cheque Bounce." This is a punishable offense under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
4. How to Obtain the New Cheque Book
* Certain banks, such as Bank of Baroda, have reportedly begun the process of issuing these new cheque books.
* You can surrender your existing cheque books to your bank and collect the new ones.
* You can request a new cheque book by contacting your bank branch officer, through banking apps, or via SMS.
