A Wonderful Night to Hunt

Part 2

After tracking him across twenty states, finding him in the forest was trivial. He’d gotten sloppy, hadn’t even bothered to cover his tracks. I followed them, through the well-trodden footpaths, onto the overgrown trails, and into the uncharted wilderness that authorities had ordered the public to stay away from, due to animal attacks. I had to hurry. The sun had almost completely set and the full moon would be up soon. I wanted this conversation to be man-to-man, not man-to-beast.

I found him in a clearing. He was still preparing for the hunt, rooting around in a duffle bag and pulling out his tools. An assortment of knives, an ax, and a single gun that had been designed to take down elephants. I knew them well. He had used all of them to kill my family.

Unhinged

First, I’ll tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a first-year college girl and have led, by most standards, a pretty unspectacular life up to this point. I grew up in an upper-middle class school district with decent teachers. I did track in middle school and some of high school, and I’ve had two boyfriends. Now, I’m studying for a career in occupational therapy, because I feel the field is undervalued and provides tremendous help to people. I’m giving you this background because there’s this strange misconception that if you want to kill someone then you’re either sick in the head or you have anger management issues. But, it’s very apparent that I don’t fall into either of those categories. It’s true that most murder cases are in a domestic setting where someone loses control of their anger or something. But the thing is that those people kill under provocation, whether by a singular outburst or by a slow-burning series of misfortunes. Those people kill because in that brief moment, they want a specific someone, for a specific reason, to be hurt or killed. What I’m talking about is wanting to kill someone for no specific reason, maybe just to see what it’s like. Do you ever get that?

I strolled in on a Saturday morning , just five days after the “grand” reopening. I was feeling pretty groggy, still recovering from a cold I caught during the week. The humid August air didn’t help matters. Because of this, I decided to grab a coffee before getting my things set up. I walked across the glimmering, newly replaced floors and heard them squeak under my sneakers. I laughed a little to myself, almost tempted to start turning in place just to hear the sound a few more times.
“No,” I told myself, “Grow up.”
I ordered my coffee and took a look around the room while I waited for it. I took a mental note of how many faces were in the cafe with me. I was surely going to grab a quiet little table in the corner, away from these strangers.
“Small iced regular?” The barista held out my coffee and straw.
“Thanks.” I said plainly.
I threw down a couple of quarters as a tip and strolled on over to the table I wanted.

The first real time I remember something crazy happening was when I left the kitchen and living room light on while I was asleep. I woke up to a deep, rumbling growl coming from the kitchen. Now, from the bedroom, you can see down the hall to the living room and that room is connected to the kitchen. I remember waking up and thinking that there was an animal or something in my house.
I looked down the hall toward the living room to see the light darken. Somebody had flicked off the light from the kitchen. Another low growl came, this time from the living room and I nearly screamed as I saw something bolt across the length of the hall opening and then the living room light went out.
I couldn’t tell exactly what it was though. It just seemed like a black shadow or something. It didn’t really matter. I was scared shitless. I bolted from my bed then and threw on the bedroom light, expecting something to be in this room and getting ready to come after me.
Nothing. There wasn’t anything in the room. I let out a low breath and then I slowly moved down the hall into the living room. Once I got to the end, I practically ran to throw on the light switch there. Again, nothing. Kitchen next and, once again, nothing!
I was starting to think I dreamed all of it before I went to turn off the kitchen light and stopped. Now, I was a grown woman but here I was terrified to turn off that switch. And I’ll admit it; I slept with all the lights on that night.
That was a mistake.

The Awful Thing We Did To Eliza

I reached our room and quietly opened the door. The two windows on the other side of the room had the shades drawn, blocking out almost all of the sun, even though our room was facing it. Tiny rays fell at the foot of Eliza’s bed where she lay, hidden except for her face. Her forehead was red and wet, her dark hair matted against it. I touched it. It was so hot. She was breathing quickly.
The man from the city is downstairs. He and dad talk about how much a “daguerreotype photograph” costs. Mother and I are in Eliza’s and my room. She is brushing Eliza’s hair. I put the flowers we picked today around her. I don’t like looking at her.
I’ve seen a dead person before. I was at my Uncle Jed’s burial. He was killed by two men who robbed his house. He ran after them and they shot him dead. But even with those little holes in his cheek and the black circles under his eyes, I could tell there was something certain, definite about him. Eliza didn’t have that. She very well could have been alive, except for that stillness.
It was the stillness which scared me. All the signs of her sleeping were there, save for the gentle up-and-down motion of her chest, and the light whistle of air from her nostrils. When you see a behavior so many times, you begin to expect all the signs to be present. Seeing such a vital few missing was disconcerting. My mind tries to make sense of it, but the effort brings on a slow, tired, nauseous feeling. I want to leave the room.
“Catherine, are you ready?” Dad’s voice echoes from downstairs.
“We are.” Mom’s voice breaks and doesn’t carry.
“Yes, Dad,” I finish.

🔥 Grammar Tips 🔥

#Part_2

3⃣ E.g. vs. i.e.
E.g. = for example
i.e. = that is
▶️ I think people should work smart, not hard (i.e. more efficiently). E.g. they should have better schedules rather than just studying aimlessly for hours.

4⃣ Affect vs. effect
Affect is a verb, effect is a noun.
▶️ I know my actions affect you, but the effect won't be long-term.
