#Koothanur_Saraswathi_Temple in Tamil Nadu is a very rare temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. She is also called #VidyaSaraswathi and #VidyaDevi. The temple is located at Koothanur near Poonthottam which is on Mayiladuthurai - Thiruvarur bus route. The shrine is small but is of great significance due to the rarity of Saraswati Temples in India. The temple is located on the banks of Arasalar River. The belief is that waters of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati are present in the Arasalar River. Legend has it that once there was huge quarrel between Goddess Saraswati and Brahma. They both cursed each other to be born on earth. Goddess Saraswati then prayed to Shiva to escape from human form. She merged with the Arasalar River. Before leaving she blessed the region with her presence in a shrine on the banks of Arasalar River. Koothanur is the birthplace of the Tamil poet Ottakoothar. King Rajaraja Cholan gifted this village for koothan’s poem because he is a great poet. So this village is called Koothan + oor =Koothanur. The murti of Goddess Saraswati is three-eyed. She is seated in yogasana pattern on a white lotus and wears a white silk sari. She holds palm leaves in one had. One hand is in chin mudra and one hand holds Akshamala. One hand holds a nectar pot. There is a Swayambhu Vinayaka Murti in the temple. There are also murtis of Valampuri Vinayaka, Baladandayuthapani, Nagaraja, Brahma and Swan.
