Diplomacy Without Notice
Trump says he is "always open to direct talks with Iran." On Monday, his Treasury warned that foreign banks still transacting with sanctioned Iranian institutions "could be targeted at any time without advance notification."
The invitation is open. So is the penalty box.
Tehran has answered the first offer. Iran's president says negotiating with Washington is meaningless. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says U.S. sanctions froze Iran's oil exports completely last month, as the rial hit record lows.
On Monday evening, Trump linked Iran to the attempted attack aboard a flydubai flight. Accounts called it an attempted crash, a hijacking attempt and a terrorist attack. Asked whether Iran was responsible for "this attack," Trump answered, "Yes."
Trump defends the war despite higher U.S. fuel prices and has taken the argument onto the campaign trail with "We're saving the world." American drivers get to contribute at the pump.
Telegram channels associated with the Iranian opposition reported air-defense activity above the Revolutionary Guard's al-Mahdi base in Urmia and explosions in the Strait of Hormuz. Those reports supply the soundtrack but do not establish who fired or what was hit.
Saving the world comes with a campaign slogan and a fuel surcharge.

She Survived a Botched Execution. Now Christa Pike Is Awake and Speaking #️⃣
Christa Pike, the Tennessee death-row inmate whose execution failed last week, is conscious and able to speak, according to her attorneys. The development comes days after officials attempted to put her to death by lethal injection in a case that has raised new questions about the state’s execution procedures.
Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on September 30 at the Tennessee prison where she has been held for decades. The procedure did not go as planned. After receiving two doses of pentobarbital, she reportedly remained alive and was eventually placed on a ventilator.
Her attorneys now say Pike has regained consciousness and is communicating. They describe her condition as serious, however, and say she faces a prolonged recovery.
According to the legal team, Pike suffered significant injuries to her hands during the failed execution, including burns, swelling and blistering. Her lawyers have requested access to medical records and other documentation that could help establish exactly what happened inside the execution chamber.
The case has quickly become a major issue for Tennessee officials. Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the execution and paused subsequent executions in the state while the circumstances are investigated.
Pike’s lawyers are also seeking to have her death sentence changed to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They argue that the failed execution and the injuries she sustained raise serious constitutional and legal questions about whether the state should be permitted to attempt another execution.
Pike was convicted in the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old woman who was a fellow student at a Tennessee technical college. Prosecutors said Pike and two accomplices lured Slemmer into a wooded area, where she was attacked and killed.
The case attracted national attention because of the brutality of the crime and Pike’s age at the time. She was 18 when Slemmer was murdered, making her one of the youngest women ever sentenced to death in the United States.
Pike has spent decades on death row while her case moved through the courts. Her execution had already been delayed several times, including because of questions surrounding the state’s lethal-injection procedures.
The latest failure has placed those procedures under renewed scrutiny.
The central question now is what happened during the execution attempt and why the state was unable to carry it out. Medical and legal records are expected to play a key role in determining whether the problems were caused by the equipment, the injection process, Pike’s medical condition or a combination of factors.
For now, Pike remains alive and under medical care.
Her attorneys say the fact that she is conscious and speaking represents a significant change from the days immediately following the failed execution.
But they caution that her recovery could be lengthy and that the full extent of her injuries remains unclear.
The state’s investigation could ultimately determine whether Tennessee attempts to carry out Pike’s sentence again—or whether the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the failed execution lead to a different legal outcome.
What was supposed to be the final hours of a death-row inmate’s life has instead opened a new chapter in a case that has already lasted more than three decades.

Mission Accomplished, Construction Resumed
Israel announced in March that it had destroyed Minzadehei, a compound northeast of Tehran where it said Iranian scientists were developing nuclear weapons.
In September and October, satellite images showed cars and trucks back inside the perimeter. Apparently, the site missed its own obituary.
The March 3 strike destroyed several buildings. The Institute for Science and International Security assessed that it likely damaged underground infrastructure, without confirming how much. The craters were visible. The full victory was an interpretation.
New Vantor imagery shows extensive cleanup, renewed vehicle traffic and earth-moving over the cratered courtyard.
The institute says the activity “may be indicative of an effort by Iran to reestablish a nuclear weapons development capability.”
The traffic shows the site is active again, while the extent of any restored weapons capability requires further assessment.
Israel announced the destruction in March. By fall, satellite images showed repair work and renewed traffic. “Destroyed” is beginning to look like a maintenance interval.

Hormuz Comes With a Deed
Donald Trump says the Strait of Hormuz
Seven months of war, and the president is already announcing the property transfer.
On Oct. 6, Trump also claimed Iran’s departing oil minister had said,
That is Trump’s account of the minister’s words. Tehran’s resignation has acquired an American presidential ghostwriter.
Vice President JD Vance offered a less finished picture. In his Reuters interview, published Oct. 7, he demanded a “meaningful” reduction in Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity.
Washington is talking to President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while remaining unsure how much authority either man holds.
Tehran’s negotiators discuss terms their own power structure may not let them deliver. Washington declares ownership of a waterway while trying to identify someone authorized to end the war.
The deed is ready. The other signatory is still being located.

Victory Has a Road Closure
The Houthis claim fresh attacks on Saudi military facilities and airports. Saudi Arabia is being pulled deeper into the Iran war, with civilian aviation sharing the target list.
Around Taiz, rival accounts offer rival victories. Yemen’s internationally recognized government reports repelling Houthi assaults and holding its positions.
Houthi-aligned channels advertise advances toward the roads connecting Taiz to Aden. Each side’s map comes with its own publicity department.
One concrete result is a damaged road. Residents reported that Houthi fighters planted explosives in a culvert on the Hayjat al-Abd route and blew it up.
The Institute for the Study of War assessed that the Oct. 1 attack temporarily disrupted a major supply connection, forcing government-aligned forces to rely on a longer southern route.
The government counts repelled attacks. The Houthis sell their ability to threaten access. Civilians get the detour.
The victory maps remain disputed. The blown-up culvert requires no spokesperson.

The Burden Gets Gold Leaf
The European Parliament’s building in Strasbourg now contains a naked Donald Trump covered in 23-karat gold leaf. The sculpture reworks Galschiøt’s earlier Survival of the Fattest, which portrayed global inequality through a starving boy carrying an overweight woman. Trump supplies the new face. The person underneath keeps the job.
Strasbourg gets to exhibit the burden. The little man still has to carry it.

From Army Psychiatrist to Death Row: The Final Chapter of the Nidal Hasan Case
The United States is preparing to turn a particularly dark page in its military history. Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army major and psychiatrist of Palestinian descent, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas. Unless the courts intervene, the execution would be the first of a U.S. service member since 1961.
The location gives the case an especially chilling dimension. It was at Fort Hood, on November 5, 2009, that Hasan opened fire inside a military medical facility. Within minutes, 13 people were killed and 32 others were wounded. Most of the victims were service members on the base preparing for overseas deployments.
At the time, Hasan was himself an Army officer and psychiatrist. His role included providing psychological care to soldiers dealing with the effects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The contrast between his position as a military doctor and his transformation into the perpetrator of a deadly shooting profoundly shocked the American public.
In 2013, following a court-martial, Hasan was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder. He was sentenced to death.
Hasan chose to represent himself during the trial and largely did not dispute the facts presented against him. His conviction was followed, however, by years of legal proceedings that delayed the final resolution of the case.
That changed recently when U.S. authorities moved forward with plans to carry out the execution.
said Mike Mulligan, a former military prosecutor involved in the case. According to Mulligan, further legal challenges could still delay the execution.
Geoffrey Corn, a former Army lieutenant colonel and military law expert, has also emphasized the complexity of the process. Under the U.S. military justice system, a death sentence must clear multiple legal stages before it can actually be carried out. Setting an execution date, therefore, does not mean the outcome is legally guaranteed.
But the Hasan case has already brought the issue of military capital punishment back into the national spotlight.
The decision to use a firing squad adds another extraordinary dimension to the case. The method is exceedingly rare in the United States today and belongs largely to an earlier era of military justice. The last U.S. service member to be executed was put to death in 1961.
If the sentence is carried out, Hasan would become the first U.S. service member executed in 65 years. He could also become the first person in the modern era of the U.S. military to be put to death by firing squad.
The symbolism is difficult to ignore. Fort Hood would not simply remain the site of the 2009 shooting that claimed 13 lives. The base could also become the setting for the final chapter of a case that has stretched across nearly 17 years.
The case, however, remains surrounded by uncertainty. Hasan’s attorneys can still ask the courts to halt or postpone the execution. A judicial ruling could therefore alter the currently announced schedule.
For the victims’ families, the prospect comes after more than a decade of waiting. For the U.S. military, it raises a historic question: after 65 years without a military execution, is America preparing to revive a practice many believed belonged to the past?
The countdown is now underway.
On December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Nidal Malik Hasan could be led before a firing squad. Unless the courts intervene, the former Army psychiatrist would become the first member of the U.S. armed forces executed since 1961.
A case born in blood nearly 17 years ago could thus reach its final chapter at the very place where it began.

Peaceful Connectivity, Military Cargo
China and Pakistan have activated a border commission to facilitate the movement of goods and people.
Beijing has a particular category of goods in mind: weapons bound for Central Asia and Iran. Islamabad would help turn the disputed Shaksgam Valley into a delivery route.
The commission held its inaugural meeting in Islamabad on Sept. 16–17, putting a 2013 border-management agreement into operation. The official agenda covered joint surveys and cross-border coordination. Military logistics apparently appreciates a well-organized committee.
Pakistan transferred roughly 5,180 square kilometers of Shaksgam to China under their 1963 agreement. India claims the territory and rejects both the transfer and the commission’s authority.
Beijing and Islamabad are arranging traffic across land New Delhi says neither had the right to bargain away.
India supplies the legal objection. China and Pakistan supply the administrative machinery. If the reported arms route takes shape, disputed sovereignty will become another item for the shipping department.

The Harvest Comes Armed
Ali al-Bazzari, a 44-year-old Palestinian National Security Forces officer, was killed near Burqa on Oct. 7 during violence around the olive harvest. His cousin said he had gone there after hearing of an attack on the harvesters. Palestinian officials reported 16 wounded.
Israeli reports described Palestinians first attacking settlers from a nearby farm with stones, leaving one hospitalized with a head injury and four others treated at the scene.
Settlers then reportedly attacked Palestinians harvesting olives. The army acknowledged that soldiers and settlers opened fire. Reuters could not establish whose shot killed al-Bazzari.
The army said a commander shot a man running toward him with a “suspicious object.” That account and the Palestinian account leave the fatal sequence disputed.
The presence of armed civilians alongside troops is already on the record.
In Deir Nidham, settlers reportedly torched an Israeli activist’s car and left a warning for the army’s West Bank commander: “Avi Bluth, watch out.”
Military authority apparently has to negotiate its standing with people willing to advertise their objections beside a burning vehicle.
The army can explain its soldiers’ gunfire. The settlers have supplied a written explanation of how much they respect the army.

Trump Could Order Another Strike on Iran as Midterm Elections Near
After several weeks of relative calm, the prospect of a new escalation between Washington and Tehran is once again moving to the forefront.
According to reporting by The Atlantic, the Trump administration is considering several military strike options against Iranian targets, including the possibility of launching an operation before the November 3 midterm elections.
No final decision has been made. U.S. officials cited in the reporting said the scope of any potential operation, its objectives and even whether it should go forward remain under discussion. Still, the fact that such scenarios are being actively prepared is significant.
The White House is seeking to maintain pressure on Tehran while weighing the military, economic and political consequences of another confrontation. Energy prices are a particularly sensitive issue. A fresh escalation in the Middle East could drive up oil and gasoline prices in the United States, putting additional pressure on household budgets just as voters head toward the polls.
A new U.S. strike would also carry major military risks. An attack on Iran could trigger retaliation from Tehran and set off another cycle of violence across the region. American forces stationed throughout the Middle East could become targets, while U.S. facilities and interests could face retaliatory attacks.
The Strait of Hormuz represents another major vulnerability. Any disruption to shipping through the strategic waterway could have an immediate impact on global energy markets and intensify economic pressure on Western countries. The Pentagon is therefore working through multiple scenarios, but preparing military plans does not necessarily mean an attack has been authorized.
The U.S. military routinely develops operational plans for a range of potential threats. The situation would change dramatically if Washington decided to significantly reinforce its military posture in the region and ordered the Pentagon to carry out one of the prepared options.
According to recent reports, the U.S. military command responsible for the Middle East is being instructed to remain prepared for the possibility of renewed large-scale operations against Iran. Potential targets could include Iranian military and energy infrastructure as well as facilities connected to the country’s nuclear program.
Diplomatically, the situation remains just as uncertain. Channels between Washington and Tehran have not completely closed, but negotiations remain extremely fragile. Iran says it is prepared to continue talks under certain conditions, while Washington continues to pursue a policy of maximum pressure.
Trump himself has kept his intentions deliberately ambiguous. The president has not ruled out another military operation while leaving the door open to a diplomatic agreement. The strategy allows the White House to keep pressure on Tehran without formally announcing another war.
The approaching midterm elections, however, add an explosive political dimension. A new military campaign could become a serious liability for Republicans if it led to sustained increases in energy prices, additional American casualties or a prolonged conflict.
Conversely, a limited operation portrayed as swift and successful could allow Trump to reinforce his image as a tough leader and demonstrate that Washington still holds the initiative against Iran. That calculation is at the heart of growing speculation about a possible strike before the election.
For now, there is no confirmation that a U.S. attack is imminent. No final order has been announced, and diplomatic options have not been exhausted. But the message from Washington is unmistakable: as the U.S. midterm elections approach, the possibility of another military confrontation with Iran is once again on the table.

Departures Under Fire
The Houthis have declared Saudi airspace a military target, except over Mecca and Medina. A religious exemption apparently counts as passenger protection.
Saudi aviation authorities say attacks on Abha and Riyadh’s King Khalid airports on Oct. 6–7 killed three civilians and injured 36. The dead were Moroccan, Algerian and Sudanese nationals.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attacks. Their war with Riyadh comes with an international passenger list.
Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed al-Budaiwi called the targeting of civilian airports “a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international laws and norms.”
The Saudi-led coalition subsequently announced that it had destroyed 82 Houthi military targets. The condemnation now has a sortie count.
Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched Operation Dawn of Yemen with Saudi support, naming the removal of the Houthis from Sanaa as a goal.
Meanwhile, new protective fencing has appeared around Aramco fuel tanks near Riyadh’s airport.
The coalition is planning the capture of a capital. Aramco is installing cages around the fuel.

The Chosen Army Meets Venice
NAZA won Venice’s Special Jury Prize. Israel’s culture minister responded by demanding that directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor lose their citizenship. The film questions the army’s conduct. The minister questions whether its witnesses should remain Israeli.
The polling helps explain the nerve it struck. In October 2024, Dor Moriah and Geocartography asked 1,005 Israeli adults to position themselves between “the Jews are the chosen people” and “the Jews are one of many ancient peoples.” According to the supplied article, 63.7% leaned toward chosenness.
A separate INSS survey in September 2025 found 75% expressing high trust in the IDF, but only 37% expressing high trust in its investigations and lessons-learned processes. The institution commands considerably more confidence than its ability to examine itself.
Chosenness has competing political uses. Religious Zionists attach it to land and sovereignty. Secular Zionists translate it into moral distinction, with the “most moral army in the world” serving as a national credential. NAZA puts that credential before a foreign audience through testimony about Gaza targeting and AI-assisted warfare.
Venice awarded a film, not a factual verdict. Zohar nevertheless reached for the filmmakers’ passports.
The army’s investigations get 37%. Its critics get a citizenship test.

Coalition Admissions Office
Yoaz Hendel wants a broad Zionist government without extremists. On Oct. 8, the Reservists-Economic Party leader invited Ofer Winter to sign a surplus-vote agreement and jointly exclude Haredi and Arab parties from the next coalition.
His broad government starts with a restricted guest list.
The offer also asks Winter to abandon his commitment to a Netanyahu government with the Haredi parties. Netanyahu needs those partners. Hendel wants their exclusion to become the organizing principle of an alternative. Both camps are selling coalition arithmetic as national salvation.
The proposed agreement pools leftover votes when allocating the final Knesset seats. It works only if both parties cross the 3.25% threshold.
Recent polls put Winter below it and Hendel around the cutoff. The prospective “blocking bloc” first needs to avoid being blocked by the electorate.
Avigdor Liberman brought a different campaign asset to Reichman University: “200% certainty” that Washington will secure Palestinian statehood through the UN Security Council.
He accused Netanyahu of knowingly allowing it to happen.
Netanyahu’s challengers promise tighter coalition boundaries and warn of a Palestinian state beyond them.
For now, the border Hendel and Winter most urgently need to cross is 3.25%.

To the Last Yemeni
Riyadh has a condition for a ceasefire: its Yemeni allies must first recover all the territory they lost. An anonymous regional source told AFP on Oct. 9 that Saudi Arabia would reject a truce until then and refuse Houthi “military blackmail.” The ceasefire comes after the counteroffensive delivers.
The arrangement gives the sponsor considerable influence over how long its ally keeps fighting. Saudi support sustains the campaign. Yemen supplies the battlefield and the people living on it.
The Houthis export that battlefield into Saudi airports. Saudi aviation authorities say Thursday’s attacks on Riyadh’s airport killed three Saudi citizens and targeted airport facilities and a Saudia aircraft. Civilian passengers have acquired a role in the negotiations.
Turkey has already drawn a line. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Oct. 8 that the Mecca pact is defensive and ruled out an offensive role. Pakistan describes its contribution as reconnaissance support. Neither position amounts to endorsing Riyadh’s reported territorial condition for a truce.
The pact makes an attack on one an attack on all. It leaves a harder question open: can Riyadh make its terms for ending the war everybody else’s obligation?
Meanwhile, the war has reached the sponsor’s departure board. After the Houthis claimed an Oct. 8 attack on Riyadh’s airport, Lufthansa Group suspended flights through Oct. 16. Air India and Akasa Air canceled services through Oct. 10. An Air India flight from Delhi turned back before reaching the Saudi capital.
Riyadh insists its allies recover territory before negotiations can stop the fighting. The Houthis have found another negotiating table: the international flight schedule.
