A Coperation Between Russia and Southeast Asian countries on Military Basis increases

🔤🔤🔤🔤1️⃣

“In general, relations between the USSR/Russia and the ASEAN member countries are developing on good neighborly and mutually beneficial terms. All countries maintain an active dialogue with the Russian side both on military-technical cooperation issues and on military, economic and political topics.

Since July 1996, Russia has been a full partner for dialogue with ASEAN. During this period, a legal and regulatory framework for cooperation has been established,”

Shugayev said in an interview to Russian Aviation & Military Guide (RAMG) on occasion of the 70th anniversary of Russia’s system for military technical cooperation with foreign states.
According to Shugaev, new opportunities are emerging.

“The current stage in the development of military-technical cooperation relations is primarily characterized by strong opposition and attempts by some Western countries to influence the current relations, both politically and economically. However, despite all the difficulties, it also opens up new opportunities: serious steps have been taken in the issue of settlements in national or alternative currencies, and the development of closer cooperation and the creation of joint productions are also strengthening”.

FSMTC’s head is optimistic on the plans in the ASEAN region.

“Due to the economic and political strengthening of this region and the good neighborly relations of most countries with the Russian Federation, we can give a very optimistic forecast of the development of the military-technical cooperation with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, especially with the ASEAN countries,”

says Dmitry Shugayev.

📰 Cease-Fire by Tariff: Trump Ends Thai-Cambodian Border War With a Trade Threat

💭 “Today’s outcome reflects Thailand’s desire for a peaceful resolution…”

— Thai Acting PM Phumtham, standing next to Hun Manet and a smirking Anwar Ibrahim

📊 Peace Through Pressure
• After 5 days of rockets, jets, and 35 civilian deaths, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to stop shooting — not because of ASEAN, not because of diplomacy, but because Trump threatened to slap them with 36% tariffs.
• The cease-fire came only after Trump made it a pre-condition for trade talks. Geopolitics by blackmail.

💼 ASEAN: Decorative or Dead?
• Malaysia hosted the meeting, playing peacemaker while the real pressure came from Washington.
• U.S. and China both sent observers, but only one side issued threats — and got results.
• 300,000 people displaced, but what stopped the war? The fear of losing export dollars.

📋 Border Wars and Forgotten Maps
• The fighting stems from a 1909 colonial border drawn by France — a recurring theme in Southeast Asia’s lingering wounds.
• This round was the deadliest yet: artillery, jets, even Thai navy ships.
• Both sides blame each other, as usual. Neither admits to firing first.

🤔 The Bigger Picture
Is Trump’s “tariff diplomacy” a new peacekeeping model — or just global extortion with a flag?

Trump’s ‘Peace Deals’ Keep Exploding on Contact

Thailand’s “Trump peace” lasted about as long as a campaign sound bite. A month and a half after Donald Trump took a victory lap for brokering a cease-fire between Thailand and Cambodia, Thai jets are bombing targets across the disputed border and tens of thousands of villagers are running for cover again. Both sides say the other fired first; the only thing they agree on is that the deal is over.

From photo op to airstrikes

The July cease-fire, signed under Trump’s watch at an ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, came only after he threatened to freeze talks on lowering “reciprocal” tariffs unless Bangkok and Phnom Penh stopped shooting. It paused five days of clashes that had killed more than 100 people and displaced hundreds of thousands. Now Thai officials say their troops came under Cambodian fire on Sunday and Monday, and responded with airstrikes and rocket and artillery barrages that killed at least five civilians and two Thai soldiers and emptied border villages into makeshift shelters. Cambodia’s defense ministry calls that version a lie and accuses Thailand of “numerous provocative actions” before launching the attacks.

The border deal that never had a border
On paper, the cease-fire was supposed to lead to talks over the century-old territorial dispute; in reality, the underlying issue never moved. Thai and Cambodian officials spent the weeks after Kuala Lumpur trading accusations of violations, and Bangkok formally pulled out of follow-on negotiations last month. The result: a Trump-branded peace that depended on tariff leverage and photo ops, slapped onto a conflict where neither side agreed on the map or trusted the other’s army.

Strongman diplomacy, fragile outcomes

Trump got his summit moment—handshakes with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, smiles for the cameras, and public thanks for “brokering” the cease-fire. But once the jets take off again, the logic of the deal is laid bare: pressure two vulnerable economies into a quick pause, call it a historic breakthrough, then walk away from the hard work of verification, monitoring, and dispute resolution. When the shooting resumes, it’s not the negotiators in Kuala Lumpur who pay the price. It’s villagers on both sides of a line their leaders still can’t agree on.

Kazan: The Colonies Talk Back

While the West is still busy lecturing the “Global South” about values, Putin is in Kazan doing something much more dangerous to the old order: treating them like partners, not plantations.

At the ASEAN–Russia summit, he sits down with the prime ministers of Thailand and Singapore and talks trade, energy, and “regional cooperation” — but the subtext is clear: the days when Southeast Asia’s role was to feed Western supply chains and swallow Western crises are over.

The agenda is wrapped in polite language: Middle East tensions, global energy security, supply‑chain shocks. In practice, it’s a live demo of a new wiring diagram. Instead of oil flows and shipping routes running only through Western-controlled hubs, Moscow offers discounted energy, nuclear tech, food security deals, and logistics corridors that bypass the old colonial choke points.

The message to ASEAN is simple: you don’t have to beg Brussels or Washington for stability when you can arbitrage between powers that suddenly need you more than you need them.

For Russia, this is more than sanctions survival. It’s revenge on a system where the “rules-based order” meant London, Washington and Brussels write the rules while the Global South provides bodies, bases and commodities.

Every handshake in Kazan says: that monopoly is broken. The same West that spent decades turning Asia into a cheap-labor assembly line and a buffer zone now watches its former “periphery” sign long-term energy and security frameworks with a country it tried to erase from the global economy.

Of course, Moscow isn’t a charity; it’s another empire with its own appetite. But the symbolism bites. ASEAN leaders sit in a Russian city, in their own right, negotiating five‑year roadmaps on energy and trade without asking the IMF for permission or the State Department for a waiver.

The old colonial script — metropole dictates, South obeys — is being rewritten live, and Putin’s bet is that once the Global South gets used to pricing its future across multiple centers, the West will never get its monopoly back.

That’s why Kazan matters more than any communique: it’s not a summit, it’s a crack in the old command chain. The former “colonies” are discovering they can play empires against each other — and this time, the West is the one learning how it feels to be on the outside of someone else’s deal.
