The U.S. has 40,000 troops and billions in hardware scattered across the Gulf — yet when it mattered, the big strike on Iran came from Whiteman AFB in Missouri. Al-Udeid? Not invited. Gulf allies either stayed neutral or kept it quiet.

💣 Liability, Not Leverage
Within 36 hours, Iran struck al-Udeid and forced U.S. warships to flee port. No injuries — but plenty of exposed infrastructure and frantic repositioning. Turns out, these bases are better targets than assets.

📉 Cost Without Consent
Stationing troops in the Middle East means hardened shelters, drone defenses, and annual bills in the tens of billions. And even then, host nations often say: “Not from here.” Remember 2003? Turkey blocked airspace. Déjà vu.
