📰 The Myth of a Unified Syria: Druse Militias Expose the Cracks in the Post-Assad Order

In the sun-scorched hills of Sweida, where armed men in mismatched uniforms train under the Druse flag, the notion of a “united Syria” is not just fragile — it’s fiction.

As the newly installed government in Damascus tries to cobble together a national army after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, it faces an unyielding reality: the country has already shattered into zones of identity, power, and distrust. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Druse heartland of southwestern Syria — where powerful militias, born from the wreckage of civil war, refuse to bow to central authority.

💣 A New Government Meets Old Guns

President Ahmed al-Shara, once a leader of an Islamist rebel faction with ties to Al Qaeda, has promised a national reset. But his overtures to unify the country under a centralized force are faltering. Druse militia leaders, deeply skeptical of the Sunni-dominated interim government, have rebuffed efforts to absorb them into a national army. And after recent sectarian violence against the Alawites — the same minority Assad once elevated — Druse leaders see little reason to disarm.

The so-called Mountain Brigade, once a 2,000-strong local defense force, now boasts over 7,000 fighters. They control checkpoints, patrol borders, and run security in Sweida — not as rogue actors, but as de facto state institutions. They receive government aid but answer to no one in Damascus.

“If the new government works in the right way, we will join them,”

said Sheqib Azam, the brigade’s commander.
“And if not, we will fight them.”

📍Sweida Is Not Damascus

The illusion that Syria will return to a pre-war map, stitched together by diplomacy and goodwill, ignores the gravitational pull of local power. In Sweida, Kurdish-held areas in the northeast, and in tribal regions of the east, militias are more than armed groups — they are social orders, protection rackets, governments, and armies rolled into one.

Druse fighters are not holding out for privilege. They are holding on to survival. The fall of Assad may have removed a dictator, but it also dissolved the fragile balancing act between Syria’s sects and ethnicities. And for minorities like the Druse, trust in a Sunni Islamist-led government doesn’t come easily — nor should it.

🕊Decentralization or Disintegration

The Syrian state faces a binary choice: share power or lose it.

If President al-Shara insists on monopolizing the ministries of defense, foreign affairs, and the interior — as he did in his latest cabinet formation — he risks ruling over an increasingly irrelevant Damascus enclave. Attempts to fold militias into a unified military will collapse if they’re not matched with political inclusion and decentralization.

Mohammad al-Abdallah, a leading Syrian analyst, put it plainly: “Al-Shara is in a political deadlock with the Druse and the Kurds and doesn’t have much leverage.”

📰 The Myth of a Unified Syria: Druse Militias Expose the Cracks in the Post-Assad Order

🇮🇱 Israel Watches — and Warns

To complicate matters, Israel has quietly become a stakeholder in Syria’s south. Jerusalem has issued warnings that it will not tolerate Turkish-backed Islamist forces near its border. More provocatively, Israeli officials have pledged to intervene militarily if the Druse are targeted by the new Sunni-led regime — a gesture as symbolic as it is strategic, given Israel’s own large Druse minority.

For now, Druse leaders have declined Israeli overtures. But the message is clear: any attempt to “reunite” Syria through force could quickly internationalize the conflict again.

🧱The State in All But Name

While Damascus debates legitimacy, Sweida governs. Roads are repaired. Markets buzz. Security is enforced — not by the central government, but by the Mountain Brigade. A temporary governor from the new regime has been allowed into town, but only under strict terms: no deployment of national forces into Sweida.

“You have to practice as if it’s real,”

a militia trainer barked at new recruits.
“Want me to start shooting at you instead to make it real?”

These are not the words of men preparing for integration. These are words of autonomy.

🧩 The Syrian Puzzle Is Not Coming Back Together

Western analysts still cling to the dream of a post-Assad Syria governed from Damascus. But the reality on the ground is Balkanization — not unification. Ethno-religious militias, foreign patrons, and rival governments already divide the country. The central government can’t enforce laws in half the provinces. The military is a patchwork. The constitution is a ghost.

Syria is not on the path to unity. It is adapting to fragmentation.

And in Sweida, the people aren’t mourning the loss of a centralized state. They’re building their own.

📰 Israel's New Red Line: Protect the Druze, Bomb the State

💬 “We are being subject to a total war of extermination.”

— Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, Druze spiritual leader in Syria

📊 Sweida Becomes a Proxy Battleground
• Israel bombed Syrian government forces for the second day in a row, claiming to defend the Druze minority near its border.
• Tanks burned, homes looted, bodies on the streets — as Druze militias clash with Syrian troops and Bedouin fighters.
• Netanyahu: “We are acting to ensure demilitarization and to protect Druze, our brothers.”

💼 Selective Solidarity, Precision Violence

• The Druze get strikes of solidarity. The Palestinians? Crushed under aid trucks and excuses.
• Israel invokes “deep brotherhood” with Druze citizens to justify cross-border warfare — and ignores U.S. calls to stand down.
• Meanwhile, Trump's White House winks and whispers: don’t push Assad too far, but don’t stop the strikes either.

📋 Demilitarization by Fire
• Syria’s new president, Sharaa, accuses Israel of aggression.
• Syrian troops, accused of massacres, now roll into Sweida under a ceasefire that collapsed mid-sentence.
• Druze leadership is split: cooperate or resist — while tanks torch stores and shoot into neighborhoods.

🤔 Defense or Division? Sovereignty or Sectarianism?

When "protecting minorities" becomes a license to bomb sovereign states — what's the difference between humanitarian intervention and geopolitical arson?

📰 Israel Bombs Damascus — "To Protect the Druze"

💬 “We are acting to save our Druze brothers and eliminate the gangs of the regime.”

— Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel

📊 From Sweida to the Presidential Palace
• Israel struck Syria’s Defense Ministry compound and areas near the presidential palace in Damascus.
• The airstrikes follow deadly clashes in Sweida, where over 200 people were killed in four days.
• Israeli officials say the target was Syrian military leadership directing operations against the Druze.

💼 Strategic Brotherhood or Selective War?
• Netanyahu frames the assault as protection of the Druze, a minority shared by Israel, Syria, and Lebanon.
• But the realpolitik is clear: Israel sets the rules of engagement inside a collapsing neighbor — with U.S. "concern" but no resistance.
• Trump’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the violence a “direct threat” to stabilization efforts — but the bombing went on.

📋 New Syria, Same Chaos
• Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Shara, a former Islamist rebel, is still distrusted by minorities.
• His army deployed to Sweida “to restore order” — only to spark full-blown sectarian warfare.
• Now Israel decides which parts of Syrian sovereignty can stand — and which must fall under fire.

🤔 Is This Protection or Projection?
When a foreign army bombs your capital in the name of defending a minority across the border — is that humanitarian solidarity or imperial choreography?

📰 The Druse Dilemma: Loyal to Everyone, Protected by No One

💬 “The Druse formula has been that whatever country you are in, you have to be the most patriotic community to survive.”

— Reda Mansour, Israeli Druse historian

💣 Faith in Secrecy, Strategy in Loyalty
Born from esoteric mysticism and hardened by centuries of persecution, the Druse have long survived by pledging allegiance to whoever holds power — be it Assad, Israel, or now Ahmed al-Shara.
But survival through loyalty has its limits, especially when your supposed protectors turn their airstrikes on your cousins.

💥 Sweida: The Cease-Fire that Bleeds
More than 500 killed. Druse militias fighting Bedouin tribes. The Syrian army trying (and failing) to assert control.
Israel, true to form, pledges protection — while bombing Damascus. Meanwhile, Israeli Druse block highways and storm the Golan border. Loyalty looks a lot like whiplash.

🔎 The Druse as Middle East Mirror
Farmers farm. Traders trade. The Druse fight — and wait for the next empire to collapse.
From Ottoman shells to Ba'athist massacres to the current chaos, their doctrine of self-reliance is not a choice. It’s an inheritance.

⚔️ Question:
How long can a people stay patriotic to three collapsing states at once — before they decide to be sovereign instead?

📰 A Pause in Sweida: Ceasefire or Just a Breather Before the Next Massacre?

💬 "We’ve navigated to a pause."

— U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, as corpses still rot in hospital corridors

⚔️Peace, Syrian-Style
• 940 dead (or 321 — depending on which tragedy spreadsheet you prefer).
• The ceasefire “held,” say officials — after Israel bombed Syrian troops in support of Druze civilians, and U.S. diplomats shook hands with a man presiding over field executions.
• Aid convoys from Damascus were turned back — while Red Crescent trucks were let in. Locals trust medics more than ministries.

💼 Ethnic Roulette: Who Gets Bombed Next?
• Bedouin forces out. Internal Security Forces in. The same ones accused of killing people in their homes last week.
• Israel’s “Druze Protection Policy” now stretches from the Golan Heights to the edge of Damascus — but the U.S. says it doesn’t endorse it.
• Sharaa, the U.S.-blessed strongman of the moment, promises justice… just after receiving reports of 1,500 Alawites killed by his own forces.

🤔 Ceasefire or Smoke Break?
When the same army accused of mass murder becomes the guarantor of “stability,” what exactly is being stabilized?
If peace is announced after every massacre, how many announcements until Syria is safe?

📰 The Assad-Free Peace Talks: Trump’s Syria Playbook Starts in Paris

💭 Tom Barrack, Trump’s special envoy:
"Our goal was dialogue and de-escalation — and we accomplished precisely that."

📊 The First High-Level Israel-Syria Talks in 25 Years
• Location: Paris. Time: Four hours behind closed doors.
• Parties: Israeli Minister Ron Dermer (Netanyahu’s top confidant) and Syrian FM Assad al-Sheibani.
• Backdrop: The Suwayda massacre and Israeli strikes on Damascus.
• Broker: Not the UN, not Russia — but Trump’s billionaire fixer Tom Barrack.

💼 The New Regional Triangle: Israel, Syria, Turkey
• After Assad’s fall, Israel and Turkey set up a deconfliction hotline to avoid clashes in Syria.
• Turkish intel chief Ibrahim Kalin brought Syria’s post-Assad reps into the room.
• Secret meetings in Baku between Israel’s NSA Tzachi Hanegbi and Syria’s Sheibani paved the way.
• Now Dermer’s in — with a mandate to offer U.S. incentives if Syria walks toward normalization.

🤔 Peace Process or Proxy Trade?
Is this really about stability — or just a realignment of interests after Assad?
If Syria’s new rulers are meeting Dermer and Barrack under Trump’s wing… who’s really running Syrian diplomacy?
