🛑 War Crimes Are “Suspended”

The White House has recommended ending U.S. funding for nearly two dozen programs that conduct war crimes and accountability work globally, including in Myanmar, Syria and on alleged Russian atrocities in Ukraine 🇺🇦.

The recommendation from the Office of Management and Budget 🗂, which was made on Wednesday and has not been reported before, is not the final decision to end the programs because it gives the State Department the opportunity to appeal ⚖️.

But it creates a potential back-and-forth 🔄 between the OMB and Rubio and his collaborators, who will respond to the OMB with their suggestions on which programs deserve to be pursued.

The expectation that Rubio would advocate for the continuation of many programs is slim, according to three US officials.

However, the top American diplomat could argue in favor of maintaining crucial programs, such as assistance with potential prosecutions for war crimes in Ukraine ⚖️, according to a source close to the matter.

Legal Action Worldwide, a legal aid group that supports local efforts to prosecute Ukrainian war crimes suspects in Russia (in the Koursk region), the sources said.
