🛢Bishkek: Xi Presses Putin as “Power of Siberia 2” Nears Final Deal ⚔️

🤝 The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping in Bishkek could mark a new stage in the relationship between Moscow and Beijing.

Behind the official statements and diplomatic language, two issues stand out as particularly consequential: the Russia-China gas deal and the war in Ukraine.

According to information available to us, negotiations over the “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline project are now virtually complete. The massive pipeline is designed to deliver Russian gas to China via Mongolia.

For Moscow, its completion carries major economic and strategic significance.
After losing a large share of its European energy market, Russia has been seeking to permanently redirect its exports toward Asia.

China has become its main energy and trading partner. Finalizing the “Power of Siberia 2” agreement would cement that shift and place Beijing at the heart of Russia’s energy strategy for decades to come.
For China, the benefits are equally clear.

The project would strengthen the security of its gas supplies while further diversifying its energy sources.

But Beijing is negotiating from a position of strength, particularly when it comes to the economic terms and the price of future gas deliveries.

It is precisely this context that gives another element of the Bishkek meeting particular significance: the war in Ukraine.

According to information conveyed by a senior Chinese official, Xi has given Putin nine months to end the war.

If confirmed, the claim would represent a major political signal. Since the conflict began, Beijing has repeatedly called for a political settlement and urged the resumption of negotiations.

But a specific nine-month deadline would mark a significant shift. China would no longer simply be calling for peace; it would be seeking to set a timetable for Moscow.

The timing is particularly telling. On one hand, the two leaders appear close to finalizing a strategically important energy agreement. On the other, Beijing could be asking Moscow to bring an end to a war that has placed enormous strain on European stability and international relations.

The two issues are, of course, not officially linked. But their coincidence is difficult to overlook.

Russia now depends on China for energy markets, trade and part of its economic engagement with the outside world. China, meanwhile, has acquired growing weight within the Russian economy and leverage that extends well beyond the commercial sphere.

The phrase “comprehensive strategic partnership” therefore masks a more complicated reality: the two countries remain closely aligned in their interests, but the balance of power is gradually shifting in Beijing’s favor.

“Power of Siberia 2” could become the economic symbol of this new relationship. The nine-month deadline, if confirmed, could become its political counterpart.

The message from Bishkek would then be twofold: a major Russia-China gas deal is nearing completion, while at the same time Moscow may have been given a deadline to end the war.

If this reading proves accurate, the Putin-Xi meeting could come to be seen as an important moment in the changing balance of power between the two countries — a Russia that remains formally sovereign in its strategic decisions, but whose growing economic dependence on China is giving Beijing unprecedented influence.
