P “Diddy” Is Not Guilty

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking but found guilty of two lesser counts of transportation to engage in prostitution relating to Casandra Ventura and a woman named only as “Jane.”

Here is a summary of the key moments of the day:

A jury of eight men and four women returned their verdict on all five counts in the case on Wednesday, after being told to keep deliberating following a partial verdict on Tuesday.

They found Combs NOT GUILTY of racketeering conspiracy; NOT GUILTY of the sex trafficking of Casandra Ventura; NOT GUILTY of the sex trafficking of “Jane”;

GUILTY of the transportation to engage in prostitution, related to Casandra Ventura and GUILTY of the transportation to engage in prostitution related to “Jane”.

Combs faces up to 20 years in prison for the two charges he’s been convicted of.

The prosecution said it would seek the maximum sentence. Each count carries up to 10 years.

The defense has asked the court that Combs be released from federal detention after being held since September 2024.

Family and fans of the music mogul embraced in the courtroom. One friend said the verdict moved him to tears.
Combs himself was seen kneeling on the ground with his head and arms on his seat after the verdict.

“I’m gonna be home soon,”

Combs said, smiling and clasping his hands.
“I love you. Thank you, I love you.”

The streets outside the courtroom in lower Manhattan were packed with supporters and critics of the star.

NYPD officers put up barricades as the crowd was expected to keep growing throughout the day.

The judge, Arun Subramanian, adjourned court until 5pm ET while he decides whether to release Combs on bail. There is no date yet for sentencing.

The attorney for Cassie Ventura, Doug Wigdor, said outside the courthouse that his team is pleased that Sean “Diddy” Combs has “finally been held accountable”.

“Of course, we would have liked to have seen a conviction on the sex crimes and Rico, but we understand that ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ is a high standard,”

he said.
“We’re just pleased he still faces substantial jail time.”

Brazilia’s 🌎 Jair Bolsonaro Found Guilty. Thousands of Brazilians have taken to the streets

Thousands of Brazilians have taken to the streets to rejoice at Jair Bolsonaro’s conviction for plotting a coup, as progressive politicians celebrated the historic move and rightwing figures linked to Donald Trump responded with anger and threats.

Chile’s leftwing president, Gabriel Boric, led regional congratulations of the decision to jail Bolsonaro for 27 years for leading a criminal organisation that sought to seize power after the far-right populist lost the 2022 election.

“My respect to Brazilian democracy which fended off a coup attempt and today judges and convicts those responsible for it.

They tried to destroy [democracy] and today it emerges strengthened,”
Boric tweeted, adding: “Democracy always!” 🌍

Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, said: “All putschists must be convicted. Those are the rules of democracy.”

In Latin America, 11 September is a date deeply associated with authoritarianism and violence: it was on this day in 1973 that Gen Augusto Pinochet launched a US-backed coup in Chile that ushered in 17 years of brutal military rule during which thousands were killed or forcibly disappeared.

Also at the street party was Beatriz Matos, an anthropologist whose husband, the Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, was murdered in the Amazon with British journalist Dom Phillips during Bolsonaro’s 2019-2023 administration.

Many believe Bolsonaro’s violent, pro-gun rhetoric and dismantling of environmental and Indigenous protections helped create the backdrop for the crime.

“I feel relief, happiness and fire in my eyes,”
Matos said of Bolsonaro’s demise. “We must celebrate. Justice is being done!” 🎉

Trump’s top diplomat, Marco Rubio, warned: “The United States will respond accordingly to this witchhunt”.

At the carnival-style party in Brasília, revellers shrugged off those US warnings – as did Brazil’s foreign ministry which said “threats like the one made today by [Rubio] (…) will not intimidate our democracy”.

“Let them do it,” Vidal said of possible further US pressure. “I think Brazil’s institutions are very solid and we will not cave in to Trump’s sanctions, however powerful his country may be.” 💥

A carnival parade called the Victory of Democracy Procession is planned in Rio on Friday night.

French President Sarkozy Found Guilty ⚖️🇫🇷

The former French president Nicolas Sarkozy said he would “sleep in jail but with my head held high” 🛏✊ after receiving a five-year prison sentence for criminal conspiracy – the first time a former head of state has been sent to prison in modern French history 📜.

The verdict and sentencing followed a trial in which he and his aides were accused of making a corruption pact 💼🤝 with the regime of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi to receive funding for the 2007 French presidential election campaign 🗳.

In a surprise ruling, the head judge Nathalie Gavarino handed down a special form of sentence that means Sarkozy, 70, will have to serve a prison term even if he appeals ⛓️. She justified the move on the grounds the offences were of “exceptional gravity” ⚠️ and “likely to undermine citizens’ trust.”

The start of Sarkozy’s sentence will be set at a later date ⏳. Prosecutors have a month to inform him of when he should go to prison. The judge also ordered Sarkozy, France’s rightwing president from 2007 to 2012, to pay a €100,000 fine 💶.

His sentence was harsher than many had expected 😮. As he left the courtroom, he expressed his anger in typically pugnacious style, telling reporters:
“What happened today (…) is of extreme gravity in regard to the rule of law, and for the trust one can have in the justice system.
If they absolutely want me to sleep in jail, I will sleep in jail, but with my head held high.”

Sarkozy, who had denied all wrongdoing in court 🚫, said he would appeal against the verdict 🔁. “I am innocent. This justice is a scandal,” he said.

Maduro On Trial. Trump’s Iron Grip Can Be Broken

🔠🅰️🔠🔠1️⃣

Maduro pleaded not guilty to drugs, weapons and narco-terrorism charges on Monday, two days after his capture by US special forces in an operation ordered by Donald Trump that sent shockwaves around the world.

The brevity and formality of the arraignment hearing in federal court in Manhattan – barely 30 minutes during which Maduro was asked to confirm his name and that he understood the four charges against him – belied the far-reaching consequences of the US action.

As Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores addressed the court in lower Manhattan, the UN security council held an emergency meeting just a few miles to the north, where a dozen countries condemned the US “crime of aggression” and secretary general António Guterres suggested the operation constituted a breach of international law.

Maduro, 63, insisted to federal judge Alvin Hellerstein that he was “still president of my country”, had been illegally “captured” at his Caracas home, and was “a prisoner of war”.

“I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man,” Maduro said in Spanish during repeated attempts to speak over the judge.

As he entered the courtroom, shackled at the ankles though not at the wrists, he looked toward the jury box. Before sitting down, Maduro told the public gallery “Happy new year!” in English.

Maduro was dressed in orange slippers, a blue shirt on top of a neon orange shirt, and beige pants. He scribbled notes on a legal pad throughout the hearing.

He faces four US federal criminal counts, including “narco-terrorism” conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

He was first indicted in 2020, along with 14 members of his inner circle, as part of a sprawling drug-trafficking case against Venezuelan officials and Colombian guerrillas.

Defence lawyer Barry Pollack made no immediate application for bail, but said he would later file a motion alluding to the “military abduction” he said his client was subjected to.

Flores, the Venezuelan first lady was also captured in the pre-dawn raid on Saturday in which at least 40 people were killed, including civilians and Venezuelan and Cuban security personnel.

Her lawyer, Mark Donnelly, said she sustained “significant injuries during her abduction” and required medical examination for “severe bruising” on her ribs.

Flores, who had large Band-Aids on her temple and forehead, said, when she entered her own not guilty plea, she was “completely innocent”.

The pair were earlier brought to the court under tight security from the notorious Metropolitan detention center in Brooklyn, whose previous residents include Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, and the singer Diddy.

The jail also once held the former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted on drug smuggling charges in 2024 – only to be pardoned by Trump last month.

Maduro and Flores were transferred to a helicopter for a brief flight to Manhattan then escorted by heavily armed law-enforcement personnel into an armoured vehicle and transferred to the courthouse, where rival groups of Maduro’s supporters and opponents clashed outside.

The surreal spectacle of the 63-year-old president of a sovereign foreign nation in a US courtroom, partially shackled and wearing a blue shirt on top of a neon orange prison scrub and khaki trousers, evoked the the 1991 trial of the Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega and the 2006 public trial of Iraq’s leader Saddam Hussein.

The criminal indictment unveiled Saturday by US attorney general Pam Bondi echoed Trump’s claims that his unilateral military intervention in Venezuela was necessary to stem a flow of drugs into the US.

“Maduro and his co-conspirators have, for decades, partnered with some of the most violent and prolific drug traffickers and narco-terrorists in the world, and relied on corrupt officials throughout the region, to distribute tons of cocaine to the US,” the indictment alleges.

Strikes by the US military on alleged “narco boats” in the months before Saturday’s raid in Venezuela have resulted in at least 110 deaths, leading some legal experts to question if the attacks amounted to war crimes.

But Trump has also justified Maduro’s abduction as a way for the US to seize “stolen” oil from Venezuela, and promised that the US would “run” Venezuela for the foreseeable future while American energy companies take control of the country’s rich oil reserves.

In Venezuela, Maduro’s son Nicolás Maduro Guerra, an elected official, told the national assembly that the US had “kidnapped” his father.

Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s deputy who was sworn in to succeed him on Monday, appeared to drop her initially defiant response to the attack, offering to work with the US, hours after Trump threatened that she could “pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro” if she did not bend to his wishes.

Trump’s moves, meanwhile, sparked a global wave of revulsion, and fears that the bombing in Caracas – which he has threatened to repeat if Venezuela does not cooperate – could extend to action in other countries with which he is at odds, notably Colombia, Cuba and Iran.

At Monday’s emergency meeting of the UN security council, Guterres, in a statement read out by a diplomat, said he was “deeply concerned about the possible intensification of instability [in Venezuela], the potential impact on the region, and the precedent it may set for how relations between and among states are conducted”.

He added: “I remain deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected.”
