Will Trump Wring Promises of a “Big Deal” From Putin? 🤝🇷🇺🇺🇸

Trump joins a long line of American presidents 🇺🇸 and many more European leaders 🇪🇺 who cannot resist projecting their own reasoning of Russia’s best interests onto Russian decision makers.

Trump genuinely feels that a ceasefire granting Russia de facto control of its ill-gotten territorial gains, plus a “big, beautiful” trade and investment arrangement 💼💰 with the United States, is a good deal and that Putin should take it.

The Europeans, led by Germany 🇩🇪 until 2022, offered a similarly “lucrative” energy and trade proposition ⚡️🛢 to Putin for much of his tenure in the Kremlin, with the hope that commercial ties would restrain his behavior.

Putin—and Chinese president Xi Jinping 🇨🇳—on the other hand, enjoy an ideological and pragmatic clarity that eludes their American and European counterparts.

Both are keenly aware that their personal and state interests and ideals are irreconcilable with a democratic, strong, and united America and Europe 🌍.

Consequently, the two tend to approach “deals” with the United States or Europe as temporary arrangements ⏳ to buy time to strengthen their hold on their nation and adjoining regions.

In contrast, their transatlantic counterparts often aspire to a “new dawn” 🌅 of comity and coexistence on such occasions.

These two worldviews will be on display again in Anchorage, Alaska 🏔. Trump’s voluntary charge to navigate these tricky waters 🌊 and come out on top is a tall order, but not an impossible one.
