We often hear the word “Catechumens” and “Elects” frequently during Lent. These words refer to participants who are undergoing the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) programme. Some participants take about a year, while others take years to come to where they are now.

The RCIA process can be divided into four periods which are: - The Period Evangelisation and Pre-catechumenate, Period of the Catechumenate, Period of Purification and Enlightenment and Mystagogy.

These periods are marked by three stages in which the participants receive a rite/sacrament: - The Rite of Acceptance, The Rite of Election and The Rite/Sacrament of Initiation

During the 1st period of the RCIA journey, the participants go through a stage of inquiry and exploration. They are curious about the Catholic faith and try to learn informally about it. The participants are called inquirers at this period. At the end of this period, should the individual feel they would like to journey into the Catholic faith, they will then take the first step and go through the Rite of Acceptance, which usually is done during the 1st Sunday of Advent.
Let us keep the elects in prayer as they prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation.
Being Pro-Life: What Does That Mean? with Fr. Clarence Devadass. Saturday, 19 March 2022 @ 10.30am. CAH #97.

In John’s Gospel, we read Jesus saying, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (Jn 10:10). The fulness of life is a gift that Jesus offers. In this light, what does being pro-life mean? A slogan or a way of life? This week we speak to Fr Clarence Devadass, a moral theologian, as he speaks about how every follower of Jesus must be pro-life. Tune in on Saturday, 19 March 2022 at 10:30 am.

Upon being welcomed into the church, the inquirers who are now known as catechumens can now participate in the liturgical celebrations. It is during this period in which they go through catechism to learn more about the faith, study the scripture and pray.  This period can last anywhere from a year to a few years and depends on the readiness and faith formation of the individual. At the end of this period, the catechumens express their desire to be part of the church through the Rite of Election, and will hereafter be called elects. The Rite of Election is held on the 1st Sunday of Lent.
Let us keep the elects in prayer as they prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation.

During the Chrism  mass, the priests, deacons, and representatives of the entire Archdiocesan community gather around their Archbishop, who blesses the Holy Oils for use in the coming year.

The Chrism Mass reminds us of our oneness in Christ through Baptism and its holy anointing, made possible by the ministry of the Bishop and his priests.

The Chrism mass is also a key moment in which the unity of the Bishop with his priests (together, they form the presbyterate) is manifested and renewed.

At the end of the Chrism Mass, the Holy Oils are brought back to parishes of the diocese for use in the coming year.
