Christian sacraments and sacramentals, filled with symbolism, are steeped in historical and scriptural richness. Oil is one of the array of rich symbols we have in our Christian tradition. The Church’s rites prescribe that the oils are normatively blessed and consecrated at the Chrism Mass each year.

The Church uses three types of holy oils for a host of purposes: the oil of the sick, the oil of the catechumens and the holy chrism oil. Each year the bishop blesses enough new oils for every parish during the Chrism Mass. The holy oils are then transported to individual parishes, where they are available for use during that year.

Once blessed in this way, the chrism and the other oils are no longer ordinary ointments. Instead, they are a holy, precious gift from God to the Church, signifying cleansing and strengthening, healing and comfort, and the life-giving grace of the Holy Spirit.
