A Tale of Two Indias: The Disparity in Board Exam Marking Schemes : It's a high time to do normalization of board arks by all IIMs & IITs
As per the RTI reply from IIM Bangalore: One Board 77% is almost the same as another board 98%. (IIM B do normalization of board marks)
-------------------------------------------
Do you think we'll continue to leave our future to chance? In one India, a student scores 77% and becomes a topper, celebrated for their hard work and achievement. In another India, a student scores 98% and, rather than being a topper, becomes just another high scorer in a system with a more lenient marking scheme.
But when it comes time for college admissions, both students are treated the same. The student who struggled through a tough marking scheme and the student who benefited from a liberal one find themselves on equal footing. The question we must ask ourselves is: Is this fair?
One board marks tougher, holding students to a higher standard, while another offers a more liberal marking scheme. Yet, when these students apply to the same colleges, their scores are treated as though they are equivalent. But can we truly say that 77% is the same as 99%? Shouldn't there be a common policy to ensure fairness across the board?
This brings us to the idea of normalization. Shouldn't we, as a nation, strive for a system that levels the playing field? A system where every student's effort is recognized and rewarded equally, no matter which board they come from. After all, education is meant to be a great equalizer, not a tool that perpetuates inequality.
It's time we rethink our approach to college admissions. Let's advocate for a system that is fair, just, and reflective of each student's true abilities. After all, the future of our nation depends on it.
