Institutional Births on the Rise in Bihar
As per the analytical report of health management and information system (HMIS) published by Union ministry of health and family welfare, the institutional deliveries showed a marginal increase in 2021-22 with 86.7% of the registered pregnant women going to health centres for delivery in Bihar, compared to 2020-21 data when 86.2% of women went to the health institution for delivery.
As per the data, the state was fourth from the bottom in institutional deliveries or fourth from the top in pregnant women delivering their newborn at home. The data suggests that 13.3% of deliveries in Bihar happened at home, posing risk to both the mother and the infant.
While southern states have achieved a benchmark in this criterion, with almost 100% institutional deliveries, north-eastern states were amongst the worst performers.

Kala-azar ‘eliminated’ from all blocks of Bihar
While Bihar has over 67% of kala-azar cases in the country, but all the blocks of state achieved the target of its elimination in 2022, for the first time ever. However, in order to be declared kala-azar free, the state has to maintain this target for three consecutive years.
If any block has less than one case per 10,000 of its population, then it is said to have achieved the elimination target. However, validation is done after three years.
Even though Bihar has managed to reduce the numbers and come out of the category of endemic, it has the highest cases of kala-azar as well as the deaths due to it in the country.
As per the data shared by the National Centre for Vector-borne Diseases Control, there were 547 cases of kala-azar in Bihar till December 2022, out of total 810 cases across the country. Also, out of total 39 kala-azar deaths reported in 2022, maximum 26 were in Bihar.

Bihar's first forestry college in Munger district
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on 07 Feb, 2023 inaugurated newly constructed buildings of state’s first forestry college at Munger Sadar block headquarters during his ‘Samadhan Yatra’ in the same district.
The foundation stones for the forestry college were laid by Nitish Kumar on September 25, 2019.

New Buddhist pilgrimage site consecrated in Gaya
The Gayasisha hill, also known as Brahmayoni hill (south of the Gaya town), has been developed has the new Buddhist pilgrimage site.
The place where Buddha delivered Adittapariyaya Sutta (fire sermon) was consecrated by the 12th Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche.
The new site, which includes a fire sermon stupa, has now been opened for the visit by Buddhists and other devotees.
The project has got support from Buddhist spiritual leaders from different countries including Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Hongkong.
