Speaking to Reuters, two Iranian security officials warned that renewed US-Israeli attacks on Iran would see "undersea cables to military bases, including covert ones," come under attack in such a way "to prevent repairs after any attacks to prolong disruptions to communications".
The official warned Washington not to "play with fire", and said Iran had full access to the undersea cables and could easily destroy them.
Undersea cables carry around 99% of global internet traffic, according to the International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency. But the global impact of such attacks by Iran could be limited as less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through the Strait of Hormuz, said Alan Mauldin, research director at telecommunications research firm TeleGeography.
Multiple cable cuts could slow internet services and disrupt financial transactions, e-commerce and cloud computing, analysts said. The impact would depend on how operators rerouted traffic and the capacity available on alternative connections, Mauldin said.
Restoring connections during wartime could be difficult, experts said, and higher insurance costs and delays in obtaining permits to enter territorial waters could further complicate repairs.
The Red Sea could offer a more significant target than the Strait of Hormuz, particularly if Iran had support from its Houthi allies in Yemen, though Tehran has made no public statement indicating it plans to target cables there.
The Red Sea carries data between Europe, East Africa and Asia, with capacity routed through it accounting for about 3% of global international demand and around 10% of traffic travelling between regions, Mauldin said.
Iranian strikes directly hit two Amazon Web Services facilities in the UAE in March and damaged infrastructure near one of its facilities in Bahrain. The IRGC named US tech companies including Microsoft, Google, Apple and Nvidia as legitimate targets at the height of the war in March.

🇫🇷⚡️- France holds its breath as it enters a potentially pivotal weekend. Tensions have remained high across the country despite the riots dying down Monday. Tomorrow, Marine Le Pen will hold the National Rally Congress in Orléans with 5,000 supporters, with a second event planned Sunday with around 10,000 expected supporters. Meanwhile, up to 30,000 individuals of African origins, radical leftists and antifas have made plans to go to Orléans and hold a violent counter-protest to silence her campaign. At least 3,000 police officers are expected to secure the event.
Media outlets, news channels and politicians have openly discussed whether the ongoing situation is a prelude to a civil war or not. Most agree tomorrow will be a turning point regarding the matter, one way or another.

📢 🇬🇧 🥫 Britain has urged households to stock enough water, non-perishable food and medicine to be self-sufficient for three days, launching a new “Be Ready” preparedness campaign.
Government guidance recommends about three liters of drinking water per person per day, food that needs no refrigeration or cooking, essential medications, a first-aid kit, a torch, a battery or wind-up radio, a charged power bank and cash.
Officials cited severe storms, wildfires, cyberattacks and supply chain disruptions as the main risks, with Defence Secretary Wes Streeting pointing to “increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks” and scenarios such as supermarket payment systems going down.
Germany has long gone further, recommending households keep emergency supplies for 10 days, including about two liters of liquid per person per day.
📝 ReadyGuidance: "Worth noting the US version of this advice, at Ready.gov, is one gallon of water per person per day, about 3.8 liters, because it counts sanitation as well as drinking. And the payment-systems-down scenario is the cheap one to cover: some cash in small bills, plus a manual can opener for all that no-cook food."
