🔆 σ (Sigma) Cycle in Bacterial Gene Regulation

📍 Why in Focus?
A recent study has challenged the traditional model of the σ (sigma) cycle, which was long considered a universal mechanism controlling bacterial gene activation.

📍 What is the σ (Sigma) Cycle?

✅ Sigma factors (σ) are proteins that bind to RNA polymerase and help it recognize specific promoter regions of DNA to start transcription.

✅ In the traditional σ cycle model, sigma factors:
• Bind to RNA polymerase → initiate transcription
• Detach after initiation → allow RNA polymerase to continue transcription

✅ This mechanism explains how genetic information is copied from DNA into RNA.

📍 Basis of the Model

✅ The σ cycle concept was mainly derived from studies on the bacterium
👉 Escherichia coli

✅ Particularly from the sigma factor σ70, which controls many housekeeping genes in bacteria.

📍 What the New Study Suggests
✅ The σ cycle may not be a universal mechanism for bacterial gene regulation.
✅ Some bacteria may regulate transcription without following the classic sigma factor cycle.
✅ Opens new understanding about evolution of gene regulation in bacteria.
