🔆 σ (Sigma) Cycle in Bacterial Gene Regulation
📍 Why in Focus?
A recent study has challenged the traditional model of the σ (sigma) cycle, which was long considered a universal mechanism controlling bacterial gene activation.
📍 What is the σ (Sigma) Cycle?
✅ Sigma factors (σ) are proteins that bind to RNA polymerase and help it recognize specific promoter regions of DNA to start transcription.
✅ In the traditional σ cycle model, sigma factors:
• Bind to RNA polymerase → initiate transcription
• Detach after initiation → allow RNA polymerase to continue transcription
✅ This mechanism explains how genetic information is copied from DNA into RNA.
📍 Basis of the Model
✅ The σ cycle concept was mainly derived from studies on the bacterium
👉 Escherichia coli
✅ Particularly from the sigma factor σ70, which controls many housekeeping genes in bacteria.
📍 What the New Study Suggests
✅ The σ cycle may not be a universal mechanism for bacterial gene regulation.
✅ Some bacteria may regulate transcription without following the classic sigma factor cycle.
✅ Opens new understanding about evolution of gene regulation in bacteria.
📍 UPSC Quick Facts
✅ Transcription: Process where DNA → RNA
✅ Sigma factors: Initiation proteins for bacterial transcription
✅ Example: σ70 in E. coli

🔆 Solid Organic Carbon (SOC): Key to Healthy Soil & Sustainability
#Environment
📍 What is SOC?
✅ Solid Organic Carbon refers to non-living organic material in the solid part of soil.
✅ Originates from decomposition of dead plants, animals, and microbes.
📍 Why is SOC Important?
✅ Acts as a building block for soil health, contributing to:
• Improved soil structure: Enhances drainage & aeration by binding soil particles.
• Increased water retention: Works like a sponge, absorbing & holding water.
• Enhanced nutrient cycling: Supplies key nutrients via microbial decomposition.
📍 How to Protect & Increase SOC Levels?
✅ Sustainable agricultural practices: Minimal tillage, composting, cover cropping.
✅ Afforestation & reforestation: More vegetation = more organic matter = higher SOC.
✅ Conservation efforts: Protecting existing forests & ecosystems sustains SOC naturally.

🔆 India Joins U.S.-Led Tech Alliance for Resilient Supply Chains
India has joined the Pax Silica initiative — a U.S.-led tech alliance aimed at building resilient supply chains for electronics and critical minerals.
🔆 What is Pax Silica?
📍 Objective
✅ Create a common supply chain framework for:
• Electronics
• Semiconductors
• Critical & rare earth minerals
📍 Members
🇺🇸 United States
🇮🇳 India
🇨🇦 Canada
🇯🇵 Japan
🇰🇷 South Korea
🇪🇺 European Union
📍 Background
➡️ Inaugural summit held in Washington, D.C. (Dec 2025)
🔆 Why It Matters
📍 Countering Overdependence
⚠️ Global supply chains highly concentrated in China
⚠️ China’s leverage in rare earth exports & trade negotiations
📍 Economic Security
✅ Reclaim “supply chain sovereignty”
✅ Reduce risk of economic coercion or blackmail
✅ Build trusted partner networks
📍 Strategic Significance for India
✅ Strengthens semiconductor & electronics ambitions
✅ Aligns with Atmanirbhar Bharat & supply chain diversification
