π Regional Kingdom of Bengal β Short Notes
π Rise of EIC
π’ Bengal was rich in textiles, silk, handicrafts, rice and saltpetre; major European settlements included Calcutta (British), Chinsura (Dutch) and Chandernagar (French).
π’ Strong administration, taxation, banking, credit and inland waterways made Bengal highly attractive.
π’ Farman of 1717: EIC got duty exemption on merchandise against βΉ3,000 annual payment; Dastaks allowed duty-free passage.
π’ Misuse of Dastaks and private trade by Company servants weakened the Nawabβs revenue and Indian traders.
π Conflict with Nawabs
π’ EIC fortified Fort William without permission and misused trade privileges.
π’ Siraj-ud-Daulah opposed these practices and attacked Calcutta in 1756.
π’ Robert Clive recaptured Calcutta and entered secret negotiations with Mir Jafar, bankers and other nobles.
π Battle of Plassey β 1757
π’ Fought between Siraj-ud-Daulah and EIC under Robert Clive.
π’ Withdrawal of Mir Jafarβs forces weakened Sirajβs army; EIC won.
π’ Siraj was killed and Mir Jafar became Nawab.
π’ Mir Jafar paid heavy indemnity and ceded territory around Calcutta.
π Mir Kasim & Battle of Buxar
π’ 1760: Mir Jafar replaced by Mir Kasim, who ceded Burdwan, Midnapur and Chittagong.
π’ Conflict over Dastaks/transit duties led to war in 1763.
π’ Battle of Buxar (1764): EIC under Hector Munro defeated Mir Kasim, Shuja-ud-Daula and Shah Alam II.
π Treaty of Allahabad β 1765
π’ EIC obtained Diwani rights over Bengal-Bihar-Odisha.
π’ Shah Alam II received an annual tribute of βΉ26 lakh.
π’ Shuja-ud-Daula retained Awadh and paid βΉ50 lakh war indemnity.
π’ Marked the beginning of Dual Government in Bengal.
