Every year thousands of you tell yourself the same lie, "Next year I'll clear UPSC."

This day recognises the vital role of rural women in food production, biodiversity conservation and environmental protection .

This year’s theme, “ Rural Women Farmers Caring for Mother Nature,” celebrates their contributions to seed conservation, water management and land restoration, while highlighting the need for equal opportunities, access to resources and greater participation in decision-making.

Supreme Court has ruled that conversion from Hinduism to Islam or other non-Hindu religions does not automatically entitle individuals to reservation benefits under the Backward Class category.

Dismissing the Tamil Nadu government’s plea against a Madras High Court verdict, the bench held that a person’s previous caste status does not automatically confer membership in a notified Backward Class community after conversion.

The court also reiterated the legal provisions governing Scheduled Caste status and said that reconversion to Hinduism requires independent verification by competent authorities.

🟢 British scientists have taken an important first step towards developing a universal pneumococcal vaccine using reverse vaccinology.

🔆 WHAT IS REVERSE VACCINOLOGY?
🟢 A vaccine-discovery approach that begins in silico (computer-based) using a pathogen’s genetic information rather than starting with the pathogen itself in the laboratory.
🟢 Term coined by: Rino Rappuoli in 2000.

🔆 HOW DOES IT WORK?
🟢 Genome Sequencing: Sequence the pathogen’s genome to identify its genes.
🟢 Bioinformatics: Analyse genes to identify those encoding surface proteins.
🟢 Protein Selection: Select accessible proteins with little or no similarity to human proteins.
🟢 Evaluation: Assess protein shape, stability and potential to trigger a strong, lasting immune response.
🟢 Testing: Use laboratory assays or animal studies to assess immune responses and protection.

🔆 KEY FEATURES
🟢 Reduces the time required to identify suitable antigens.
🟢 Useful against pathogens that are difficult to grow in culture.
🟢 Helps identify protective antigens when conventional approaches face challenges.
🟢 May identify proteins shared across different serotypes, supporting broader vaccine coverage.

🟢 Cannot directly identify carbohydrates and other cellular structures not encoded by the genome.
