🔆 Q. “The Constitution empowers the people as much as the people empower the Constitution.” Elaborate.
📍 (150 words – GS2, Polity)

✅ Approach:
• Brief intro about the Constitution
• Show how Constitution empowers people and vice versa
• End with a balanced conclusion

📍 Answer:
The Indian Constitution, which came into force on January 26, 1950, derives its authority from “We, the People” and in return, provides the framework for exercising rights and liberties.

🔆 How Constitution empowers the people
✅ Democratic Framework – People elect representatives at all levels.
✅ Fundamental Rights – Ensure liberty and dignity (e.g., Right to Privacy, K.S. Puttaswamy case).
✅ DPSPs – Guide policies (e.g., RTE Act 2009, Code on Wages 2020).
✅ Judicial Independence – Judiciary checks abuse of power.
✅ Decentralization – 73rd & 74th Amendments empower local self-govts.

🔆 How People empower the Constitution
✅ Sovereignty & Legitimacy – Preamble: “We the People…”
✅ Amendments – Reflect will of people (e.g., 106th Amendment – 33% reservation for women).
✅ Defending Values – Through PILs, protests (e.g., RTI Movement, Anti-corruption).

📍Conclusion:
The Constitution and the people share a reciprocal bond. While it empowers citizens, the people uphold its values and shape it through active participation, keeping it a living, evolving document.
