France Probes Racist Terror Motive After Deadly Shooting Spree

A gunman opened fire from his car on passersby in Trappes and neighboring La Verrière, west of Paris, killing one person and seriously injuring at least four, including a 12-year-old girl.

The attack began around 10:30 a.m. across three separate locations, including a bus stop, a gas station, a playground and a health center, with Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh saying the shooter fired at random and “wanted to cause a carnage.”

A 26-year-old man was killed, while the girl was hit multiple times and later described as stable.

Rabeh said the person killed was of African origin and one of the wounded was of North African origin.

The suspect, a 39-year-old man from Plaisir identified as Kévin T., was arrested within about 10 minutes in nearby Coignières and was reportedly using a WWII-era Sten submachine gun.

He was known to police for minor offenses but not to intelligence services.

France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has taken over the case, investigating murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, with the aggravating circumstance that victims may have been targeted over their ethnicity, race or religion.
