House Overload: Too Many Bills, Too Little Transparency
Right now, the New Hampshire House is processing over 1,300 bills this legislative session - and that number isn’t just big. It’s overwhelming.
When hundreds of bills are introduced each week, it becomes nearly impossible for:
Legislators to thoroughly read, vet, and debate every proposal;
Citizens to track what’s happening;
Public input to be meaningfully heard before decisions are made.
This problem is made worse by:
🔹 Unannounced executive sessions where bills are amended or voted on without notice.
🔹 Fast-tracking of proposals with little debate. Also, last-minute amendments.
🔹 Buried language that slips controversial changes into unrelated bills.
The result? Important issues can pass with minimal scrutiny, and everyday Granite Staters are left reacting instead of participating.
If representatives can’t keep up with the volume (and the public can’t keep up with what’s happening) the system is fundamentally broken.
We shouldn’t reward overload with acceptance.
When in doubt, legislators should “Just Say No.” - to submitting bills that restrict Granite Staters, to trusting the green or red flags in Representative Hall, to bills that aren't explicitly allowed by the NH Constitution.
They should slow the conveyor belt, require transparency, and insist that every bill earn a full airing before a vote.
People deserve a legislature that can actually legislate - not just churn through agendas.
📍 Your voice matters - but when bills move too fast, your voice gets lost. Please share your thoughts with your Representatives and Senators and don't let up. WE have the right and duty to hold our elected officials accountable.
