لقائله
إن الزهايمر مرض مؤلم جدا عندما نفطن الى انه يرتبط بذاكرة الشخص ويجسد الحرمان من معاودة المشاعر الجميلة المرتبطة بعدد وتفاصيل الذكريات التي تشكل حياته وماعاشه في رحلته
إضافة إلى مقدار التعسر في أداء المهام اليومية التي كانت لاتشكل عبئا او حتى محط تفكير للمريض عندما كان صحيحا فينتج عن ذلك عجز كبير يجعل المصاب بالزهايمر يعاني كثيرا عندما لايتوفر له من يساعده ويقدم له العناية .
ويعرف الزهايمر أو "خرف الشيخوخة " بأنه مرض تحللي عصبي مزمن عادة مايبدأ بطيئا ويزداد سوءا بالتدريج مع مرور الوقت ويتضمن صعوبة في تذكر الاحداث القريبة حتى يصل الى مراحل خطيرة تجعل المريض يفقد التحكم في وظائفه الجسمية ويكون معرضا بشكل كبير للوفاة .
تبدأ المرحلة التي تسبق الاعراض السريرية كمجموعة علامات تسمى " الخلل الادراكي البسيط " تتضمن نسيان الاحداث القريبة وخلل في الوظائف التنفيذية للانتباه والتخطيط وقدرا كبيرا من اللامبالاة كسلوك ملاحظ وغير معهود من قبل المريض مع نوبات من الاهتياج وتقلبات اكتئابية .
إن مصطلح العته "Dementia " هو مصطلح عام يشمل كل الاعتلالات الدماغية ويضم الزهايمر كواحد منها ولكنه لايشير اليه تحديدا عندما يتم ذكره بينما يشير الزهايمر الى مرض معين بآليه عمل معينة وصفات تخصصه عن غيره .
