Four artificial islands to anchor Assam’s Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater tunnel

The landmark first of its kind underwater rail-cum-road tunnel in India beneath the Brahmaputra is set to take shape with four artificial islands, forming a crucial part of the ambitious project connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh in Assam.

According to project documents, two of the artificial islands will cater to road traffic, while two others will support railway infrastructure.

On the Gohpur side, the road island will be at least 1.4 km long, while the corresponding island on the Numaligarh side will stretch about 1.6 km. Both will be approximately 320 metres wide

The railway islands will be considerably narrower, measuring 50 metres in width and about 2 km in length on each side.

Bihar becomes the first state in India to launch a dedicated investment policy for the sugar industry


In what is being described as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, the Bihar government has announced a direct grant of Rs 14 crore per year for five consecutive years to investors who set up new sugar mills in the state, taking the total payout to Rs 70 crore per mill over five years. The move is part of the newly launched Bihar Sugarcane Industry Investment Promotion Policy-2026, which came into force just a few days ago.
