The Centre is considering allowing private companies limited access to India’s thorium sector to boost critical mineral supply and nuclear goals. India holds over 25% of global thorium reserves, mainly in 13.3 million tonnes of coastal monazite sand, but mining is restricted due to national security concerns as monazite contains thorium and uranium.

Proposed steps include partial commercial monazite mining, more R&D to convert thorium to uranium-233, and more fast-breeder reactors to cut imported uranium dependence and integrate thorium with rare earth production, with Indian Rare Earths Ltd currently the sole authorized entity. #Mining
