Drought, dry conditions and high winds caused FDNY to launch its first-ever brush fire task force. A fire recently ignited in the middle of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and also in Inwood Hill Park. The historic drought has covered a large area from Virginia to New England. Red flag fire warnings abound. Philadelphia went 42 days without rain, and Hartford, Connecticut has only received 12% of its normal rainfall.

There is no sign that the drought will ease soon, and some areas will require more than 7 inches of rain to get back to normal. And speaking of normal…this weather pattern is far from normal.

The whole United States is under onslaught. This set of fires in the Grand Canyon has burned more than 45,000 acres, including the historic North Rim lodge, visitor center, gas station, wastewater treatment plant, and portions of employee housing.
