🌷The Holy Qur’an and Modern Scientific Discoveries🌷
There is no doubt that the Holy Qur’an is not a book about natural sciences, medicine, psychology or mathematical studies. The Holy Qur’an is a book of guidance and one which builds a human being. It mentions whatever is necessary for one to know.
We should not expect that the Holy Qur’an be an encyclopedia about the various sciences. We should seek the light of faith and guidance, piety and purity, humanness and ethics, order and law from the Holy Qur’an and it contains all of these. But sometimes in order to reach this goal, the Holy Qur’an indicates some of the natural sciences and the secrets of creation, in particular, in its lessons on unity; it removes the veil over the secrets of the world of creation and it discloses facts which were unknown to the scholars of that era.
This expression of the Qur’an forms a complex which we call the intellectual miracles of the Qur’an. Here we will indicate some of the intellectual miracles of the Holy Qur’an.

🌷The Status of the Holy Qur’an in Religious Society - 1🌷
If we would like to deal with everything about the Qur’an mentioned in Nahj al-Balaghah, it will become a very long discussion. Imam ‘Ali (‘a) has introduced the Qur’an and its status in more than 20 sermons recorded in Nahj al-Balaghah. Sometimes, he (‘a) has allocated more than half of a sermon in elucidating the status of the Qur’an, its role in the life of Muslims and their duty towards this heavenly book. Here, we shall only explain some of Nahj al-Balaghah’s descriptions of the Holy Qur’an.
The Imam (‘a) says in Sermon 133:
وَكِتَابُ اللهِ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ، نَاطقٌ لاَ يَعْيَا لِسَانُهُ.
“The Book of Allah is among you. It speaks and its tongue does not falter.”
That is to say, “The Qur’an is accessible to you. Contrary to other heavenly scriptures like the ones revealed to Hadhrat2 Musa (Moses) and Hadhrat ‘Isa (Jesus) (‘a), the Qur’an is at your disposal.” It is said that in the past, especially among the Jews, the revealed scripture had not been at the disposal of the masses. Only some parts of the Torah were at the disposal of Jewish divines and it was not possible for the masses to have access to it.

🌷The Status of the Holy Qur’an in Religious Society - 2🌷
In curing all ailments and solving all problems and difficulties, we must essentially turn to God, the Exalted, and pin our hopes on Him. It is true that in solving problems and curing ailments, we resort to natural sources but as demanded by monotheism the cure and solution to problems must essentially be expected and regarded as coming from Him.

🌷Merits of Reciting Sura al-Fatiha🌷
Al-Tabrisi, in his exegesis Majma'ul-Bayan fee Tafsir al-Qur'an, provides nine names for the first chapter of the Holy Qur'an, namely Surat al-Fatiha:
1⃣) al-Fatiha, the one that opens, for it is like a gate: when opened, it leads one to the Book of Allah;
2⃣) al-Hamd, the praise, for its verses are clearly praising the Almighty;
3⃣) Ummul- Kitab, the mother of the Book, for its status is superior to all other chapters of the Holy Qur'an, or like the war standard: it is always in the forefront;
4⃣) al-Sab', the seven verses, for it is comprised of seven verses and the only one whose verses are seven, and there is no room here to elaborate on the merits of the number 7 especially since most readers of this book are already aware of such merits;
5⃣) al-Mathani, the oft-repeated Chapter, for no other Chapter of the Holy Qur'an is repeated as often as this one;
6⃣) al-Kafiya, the chapter that suffices and that has no substitute; you simply cannot replace its recitation with that of any other chapter of the Holy Qur'an in the first two rek'ats of the prayers, whereas it can substitute others;
7⃣) al-Asas, the basis or foundation or bed-rock, a connotation of its being the foundation upon which the Holy Qur'an stands just as the Basmala ("Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim") is the foundation of the Fatiha;
8⃣) al- Shifa, the healing, due to the fact that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has said that the Fatiha heals from all ailments except death; and
9⃣) al-Salat, the prayers, or the basic requirement of the daily prayers, one without the recitation of which no prayer can be accepted, especially since the Prophet (pbuh) has quoted the Almighty saying,
"The prayers have been divided between Me and My servant: one half for Me, and one for him;" so when one recites it and says, "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-'Alameen," the Almighty says, "My servant has praised Me." And when he says, ''Arrahmanir Raheem," the Almighty says, "My servant has praised Me." And when he says, "Maaliki YawmidDeen," Allah says, "My servant has exalted Me." And when he says, "Iyyaaka Na'budu wa iyyaaka nasta'een," Allah will say, 'This is a covenant between Me and My servant, and My servant shall be granted the fulfillment of his pleas." Then if he finishes reciting the Fatiha to the end, Allah will again confirm His promise by saying, 'This is for [the benefit of] My servant, and My servant will be granted the answer to his wishes.

🌷The Quran: What Does Quran Mean?🌷
By the Qur'an we mean the verses, phrases, sentences and chapters uttered by the Holy Prophet of Islam, not as his own words, but as the Word and the Book of God revealed to him; this he claimed as his Everlasting Miracle which bears testimony to his Prophethood; and with this he challenged not only those who doubted its origin, and not only humankind alone, but even the Jinns, saying that even if the Jinns and men joined forces to produce the like of it, they would never be able to do even a small part of it This challenge was made not to any particular age, but to all ages.
By this definition we exclude all the utterances of the Holy Prophet which he did not claim to be the words of God (although the ideas and subject matter were certainly a revelation from God). The definition also excludes the words of the Holy Prophet which he presented to the people as the Word of God, but not as a miracle or a part of it with which he challenged the world (namely the various Ahadees-e-Qudsi). These Ahadees-Qudsi are so numerous and abundant that, collected together, they would be no less than the size of the Holy Qur'an, if not more, but their value is no greater than the other genuine traditions of the Holy Prophet This definition must be kept in mind throughout the discussion of the Holy Qur'an.

1. Of the religious records of historical value, pre- Islamic or post-Islamic, in our possession, no document can ever compete with the Holy Qur'an in authenticity. Of the historical records which the Muslims claim to be most authentic and genuine - of the Sunni school the Sehha-e Sitta and of the Shia school the KotobeArba'a - none can be said to have been within the reach of every Muslim from his earliest years until his death as has the Holy Qur'an. And no tradition is considered so important that every Muslim child must learn, recite and memorise it word for word with grammatical accuracy and phonetic perfection as they must do with the Holy Qur'an.
2. This importance and care which is given to the Qur'an by every Muslim did not emerge in a later period. The Muslims were attracted to the Holy Qur'an as the Word of God from the time of its revelation to the Holy Prophet and its recitation to the people. The Holy Qur'an itself; from the time of its revelation, encouraged the people in various ways to learn, read, recite and memorise ft and to ponder over every word of it and to listen carefully when it was recited. When one recites it, one must first prepare for it by dissociating oneself from anything which would cause any diversion of thought or distraction of attention (16:98-7:204).

🌷Merits of Reciting Sura al-Baqarah🌷
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is quoted by Ubayy as saying, "Whoever recites it, will receive blessings from Allah and His mercy and will be granted the rewards of one who camps for a whole year, in the way of Allah, as a soldier on the borders of the Islamic domains to protect them, being constantly on vigil." Then the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) turned to the narrator, Ubayy, and said, "O Ubayy! Order the Muslims to learn it, for learning it is a blessing, while leaving it is a loss, and no magician can ever overpower it."
He (pbuh) is also quoted as saying that everything has a zenith, and the zenith of the Our'an is Surat al-Baqarah. "Which ayat (verse)," he (pbuh) was asked, "in it is the best, O Messenger of Allah?" He (pbuh) said, "Ayat al-Kursi [2:255]," he (pbuh) answered.
And he (pbuh) entrusted the youngest among his companions, namely al-Harith ibn Zayd ibn al-Harithah, due to the fact that he knew Surat al-Baqarah by heart, to command an army to defend Islam.

🌷Merits of Reciting Sura Aali-'Imran🌷
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is quoted as saying that one who recites it will be given for each of its verses security on the bridge over hell, and whoever recites it on Friday will be blessed by Allah and His angels all day long till sunset.
His Eminence (pbuh) is also quoted saying, "Memorize Surat al-Baqarah and Surat Aali' Imran, for they are like two fragrant flowers, and they will shade the one who learns them by heart on the Day of Judgment like two clouds..." and will shade those who used to recite them quite often from the intense heat of that Day.

🌷ARBA’EEN (FORTIETH) IN ISLAMIC CULTURE 🌷
Arba’een or Chehel (fortieth) has been used in different ways in Islamic culture. This word was initially considered as a sign of perfection in the tradition (Sunnah) of the great Prophets (AS) as most of the Prophets (AS) were appointed to the position of prophethood at the age of forty. In Judaism, this word was also used for the forty nights seclusion of Hazrat Musa (AS) at the mountain of Tur. Hazrat Musa (AS) proceeded to the mountain of Tur with a promise of thirty nights but Allah perfected and completed it with ten more nights and it became forty nights. This word repeatedly mentions the promise of Allah to Hazrat Musa (AS) and his Arba’een in holy Qur’an as:
وَ وَاعَدْنَا مُوسَى ثَلاثِینَ لَیْلَةً وَ أَتْمَمْنَاهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِیقَاتُ رَبِّهِ أَرْبَعِینَ لَیْلَةً
“And We made appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights” (7:142).
In addition to this, forty has been used on many other occasions such as the Hadith (tradition) of being sincere for forty days as: “No servant of Almighty Allah remains sincere for forty days except that the fountains of wisdom come from his heart to his tongue”.
Likewise another tradition that: “if anyone memorizes and preserves forty Hadith (traditions) of holy Prophet (PBUHH) and the infallible Imams, he will be raised on the Day of Judgment as an Islamic jurist”. In line with this, most jurists have written and published books with the title “Forty Hadith” so that they might be included in the Divine mercy and raised on the Day of Judgment as a jurist.

🌷Physical Aspects of the Noble Qur'an 🌷
The Precious Qur'an consists of 114 surahs1 and 6256 ayat, some 77,436 words and about 320,211 letters.2 These numbers may be reported differently from scholar to scholar depending on the method of counting the Arabic words and letters, and sometimes depending on the division or grouping of certain ayat. The entire Book was revealed in 23 years through 194 revelations with the last revelation in the 11th year after the Hijrah (the migration from Makkah to Madinah). On an average basis, one ayah, of about 12 words was revealed per day (but not, of course, every day in practice).
The longest surah in the Noble Qur'an is surah al‑Baqarah with 286 ayat and in it occurs the longest ayah (2:282). The shortest surah is surah al‑Kawthar (108) with only three short ayat. A total of 92 surahs were revealed in Makkah before Muhammad (SA), migrated to Madinah (beginning of the Hijri calendar), and the other 22 surahs were revealed in Madinah.
The first surah of the Glorious Qur'an is al‑Fatihah (The Opening). Each surah is named after some striking incident or purpose, or after a key word in that surah. To emphasise the deserving importance of the entire being, and the environment in which the human being lives, Almighty God has granted many environmental names to the surahs of the Holy Qur'an, such as The Night, The Day, The Spider, The Honeybee, The Dawn, The Time, The Sun, The Moon, etc.
All the surahs of the Holy Qur'an begin with Bismillahi 'r‑Rahmani 'r‑Raham (in the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate) to keep reminding us of His endless Mercy and His all‑encompassing Compassion, except for surah at‑Tawbah (9), meaning Repentance. This may indicate the degree of God's anger with those who insist on disobeying Him. In contrast, this key word for the Grace, Blessing and Mercy of God has been effectively used twice in the Opening surah (al‑Fatihah).

🌷Beware: Satan’s Whispers Regarding Memorizing the Holy Quran🌷
A common argument is that there is no point in reading, let alone memorising, the Holy Qur’an if we do not understand it, and that the language is foreign to us. This, of course, is one of many forms of demotivating sophistries by the master of fallacies, Satan. Subtle, yet convincing. Plausible, yet fallacious. Imam Khomeini, may his soul rest in peace, states that
We imagine that recitation without insight has no effect –this is the whisper of Satan.
Had it not been for worship and piety, Satan would have been amongst the noblest, and behind the Divinely Guided (as), Satan would be most knowledgeable of creations in all forms of sciences. With that knowledge, and having sworn to be the enemy of mankind, the tools at the disposal of Satan, the cursed, is far greater than imaginable, and he should always be expected to be waiting in ambush for the next opportunity.
Satan Said, 'Now, for Thy perverting me, I shall surely sit in ambush for them on Thy straight path; then I shall come on them from before them and from behind them, from their right hands and their left hands; Thou wilt not find most of them thankful.' (Al-A’raf 7:17-18)
Be on guard!
Always. Even at times when one feels that finally they have started to climb the mountain of spirituality. For it could be an illusion, a decoration of our deeds, a deception of the time, and one that can lead to a greater loss. And we must also be on guard that the actions we think are pious and good, and performed in the name of religion, may not be according to the commands of the Creator. We must always question our actions lest they be decorated in a way that makes us believe something which is not.
…and Satan decked out fair to them their works, and barred them from the way, though they saw clearly. (Al-Ankabut 29:39)
..if only, when Our might came upon them, they had been humble! But their hearts were hard, and Satan decked out fair to them what they were doing. (Al-A’nam 6:43)
Is it a wonder why so many narrations confirm the need to start any task in the Name of Allah, reciting the first Ayah of the Holy Qur’an.

🌷Memorisation of the Holy Qur’an in the eyes of the Holy Qur’an🌷
Memorisation of the Holy Qur’an is one of the best ways to become intimately familiar with the Divinely sent words.
As the divine and unaltered word of Allah, the Holy Qur’an is viewed as the uniting force for all Muslims across the world regardless of nationality, sect, or political point of view. It is the undisputed source of information, and therefore given the topic and content, it would be a large lacuna to omit what the Holy Qur’an itself has to say with regards to this subject.
Al Qamar 54:17 - Easy To Recite And Remember
Now We have made the Qur’an easy for Remembrance. Is there any that will remember? (Al Qamar 54:17)
In interpreting this Ayah, and those that follow, the exegesis of both schools of thought are used.1 The conclusion of the abovementioned Ayah is clear. ذِّكْر is a term used for remembrance, the opposite of which is to forget. In Arabic, the term for memory and retentive faculty is this term, used for remembrance. مُّدَّكِرٍ is a word that was initially مُّذتكِرٍ, which is a term used for someone remembers the Holy Qur’an, and where due to the closeness of the letters ت and ذ, the letters have become conjoined to become مُّدَّكِرٍ.
The Ayah therefore asks; this Holy Qur’an has definitely been made easy to recite and remember, and the challenge is that is being asked of mankind, is there anyone who will be able to remember and be awakened by it?
Martyr Mutahhari, may his soul rest in peace, states in the book Getting Familiar with the Holy Qur’an2 under this Ayah, that no other book has been made easier to memorise than the Holy Qur’an, it is designed to be remembered and the brain was created for that purpose.
It is therefore clear; the All-Wise All-Knowing and All-Powerful Creator would not describe the Holy Qur’an with this attribute in vain and without purpose, and to further emphasise the point, this Ayah was repeated four times over in Surah Al Qamar (54:17,22,32,40).
Al Ankabut 29:49 - In The Breasts Of Those Who Have Been Given Knowledge
Nay; rather it is signs, clear signs in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge; and none denies Our signs but the evildoers. )Al Ankabut 29:49)
Those who have been given knowledge are the Prophet (S), the Divinely Guided (as) and the companions and in such exegesis as that of Alama Tabrasi, may his soul rest in peace, “Jawami Al-jami”3, describes in this category the believers who are Memorisers of the Holy Qur’an, who carry in the hearts the Holy Qur’an and its meanings.
Al Ahzab 33:34 - Remember That Which Is Recited In Your Houses
And remember that which is recited in your houses of the signs of God and the Wisdom; God is All-subtle, All-aware. (Al Ahzab 33:34)
In several Ayahs of this Surah, Allah orders the wives of the Prophet (S) with several commands. The Ayah above is one of those commandments.
The Ayah commands the wives, who have the privilege of being in the home of Prophet (S) where the Holy Qur’an is recited and entrusted and the etiquette of the Prophet (S) is practiced, to recite, protect and conduct themselves according to their practical applications. The term “in your houses” is to emphasise that they are at the source of Islam, and that they should understand that significant status and be role models for the rest of us.
While the command is directed to the wives of the Prophet (S), the Islamic Nation as a whole is also entrusted with this command as they hold close to their hearts the Holy Qur’an and the Etiquettes of the Prophet (S).

🌷Memorisation of the Holy Qur’an in the eyes of the Divinely Guided (1)🌷
In this section, we will look at some of the many narrations that have been passed down to us to indicate the importance and significance of this task.
After the Holy Qur’an, the most important source of information and knowledge there is, is that of the narrations and traditions of the Divinely Guided (as), often referred to as Infallibles (as), as they are chosen by Allah himself to be the teachers and exegetists of the Holy Qur’an. They have the role of guidance for the society and instilling love and passion for the Holy Qur’an and its memorisation as well as the practical application of the commands within it.
The most authentic sources7 available to us are used to explore this topic.
One such book is Usool Al-Kaafi (اصول الكافي), one of the oldest, most authentic texts available and written by the respected Shiekh Al Kulaini, may his soul rest in peace. It was written during the minor occultation of the Imam of our Time, may his return be hastened, and with consultation with his four representatives. It is the most valuable, authentic, complete, and comprehensive book amongst the four major texts.8
It is divided in to 35 divisions, called Kitab (or book), starting with the Book of Intellect and Ignorance. One of these Kitabs is a section on the Holy Qur’an9, and three chapters in that division are dedicated to the memorisation of the Holy Qur’an.
Wasail Al Shia10 is a book collated by Sheikh Amily, using over 180 authentic and accepted books of narrations including the four major books, he compiled the best and most authentic of these narrations in to this well-known and accepted book.
Volume 89 of the encyclopedia Bihar Al-Anwar compiled by Al Majlisi, may his soul rest in peace, is dedicated to the Holy Qur’an.
The following are forty narrations grouped by topic and their translations, the first being the recommendation to learn the Holy Qur’an.
1. Recommendations
Narration 1 - It is incumbent upon the believer
It is incumbent upon the believer to not pass away till he learns the Holy Qur’an, or be in the process of learning it. 11.
Imam as-Sadiq (as)
Narration 2 - It is the best narration
Learn the Holy Qur’an for it is the best narration, and grasp it for it is the spring of the heart, and heal yourselves with its light for it is a remedy for the chests, and master its recitation for it is the most beneficial of accounts. 12
Imam Ali (as)
Narration 3 – Happiness, Martyrdom, Salvation
If you want to the life of happiness, the death of a martyr, salvation from the day of regret, the shadow on the day of heat, and guidance on the day of straying, so then study the Holy Qur’an for it is the Word of the Merciful and the shield against Satan and the predominant (weight) on the scales (of deeds). 13

The people of the right hand vs. those who are foremost
Question: Assalaamoalaikum Sheikh! In many Surahs, Allah SWT mentions the people that are foremost and the people of the right hand. Has there been a clear descriptive distinction of the qualities and characteristics of the people of the right hand vs. the foremost?
Answer: Wa alaykumusalaam dear Muhammad.
The point you asked is quite intricate and needs long, profound discussions. Islamic scholars hold various ideas and views regarding these two words and their meanings. However, I try to explain my idea in brief.
The people of the right hand are those whose books of deeds will be given to them in their right hands. The people of the left hand are those to whom the record of their deeds is presented in their left hands. The #Quran introduces a third group called the foremost ones in Surah Al-Waqi’ah. The people of the right hand are those who are on the right path. They have a proper belief and act accordingly.
The foremost ones are those who excelled in the path of God and are brought close to Allah (muqarrabeen). Contrary to the people of the right hand, these individuals do not possess a record of deeds. In other verses, the Quran calls the foremost ones as those who have been made sincere (#mukhlaseen). They do not undergo the stages of the Day of Judgment and will enter paradise without being held accountable because they have gone through these stages earlier in this world and have surpassed others. The Quran states that everyone is gathered on the Day of Resurrection except those who have been made sincere. These stages are intended for those who must become purified to be deemed worthy of paradise, including the people of the right hand. Those who have undergone these stages in the world and have achieved purity do not require further purification.
It is important to note that Mukhles is different from Mukhlas. Mukhles refers to someone who has just entered the realm of sincerity.
I hope this will be useful to you and offer the needed understanding regarding the matter. However, don't hesitate to ask further questions if necessary.
