Dayot Upamecano’s 8th minute red card put the Bavarians in an early hole that they would never be able to dig themselves out of. Here are some quick hitters on the match:Does Julian Nagelsmann read BFW and/or listen to our podcast? People are asking (maybe not, but let’s dig into the lineup anyway):| STARTING XI
Here's how we line up to take on Gladbach! ⚪#BMGFCB pic.twitter.com/RrxiOw0d7r— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) February 18, 2023I was ecstatic to see Jamal Musiala get some rest. The kid is worn down and needed to break. Little did I know, however, that Musiala would be called into action after halftime and not really get the rest he desperately needs.I did not anticipate Matthijs de Ligt getting a rest, but he likely needed some downtime as well. It does not hurt to get Daley Blind some run, either.Leroy Sané has not look like himself lately, so a rest for him was beneficial was well. Like Musiala, though, he also got called into action.Entering the match, I was curious to see how Serge Gnabry embraced a wing-back role as he was not thrilled to play that spot last season. It did not appear, however, that Gnabry really liked playing the position much at all this season either as he was a bit of a non-factor.All that said, the early red card to Dayot Upamecano ensured at least one Bayern Munich player was going to get an extended break. The pressure of being down one man was felt almost immediately. Lars Stindl perfectly placed a one-time shot off of a set piece to put the Bavarians in a hole very early on.You could make an argument one way or the other for Upamecano’s red card. It was a little soft, but the slight contact and body positioning absolutely played a role in how it was called. It was one of those that you would want called for your team if you were attacking, but not against you if you are defending. I might have had less of a problem with it than some others.Yann Sommer might have been able to help Upamecano avoid having to make that move as well. Communication between the goalkeeper and the backline will get better, but it is not totally where it needs to be right now.I will say, I thoroughly disagreed with taking Thomas Müller off instead of Ryan Gravenberch after the red card. I feel like this is the exact situation where Gravenberch’s griping affected a coaching decision. In a match where you probably needed some veteran guile to find a way to draw even, it did not make much sense to me to take away a player who is likely most experienced at being in a 10-man situation. It was, indeed, a crappy decision. That could not have really sat well with Müller, either.Gladbach’s social media team had a hell of a day:pic.twitter.com/uCzWXyGGcK— Gladbach (@borussia_en) February 18, 2023Stindl…

Borussia Mönchengladbach v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images He did it...again. Bayern Munich shook the specter of another disappointing showing by grinding out a 2-1 victory over a very game Borussia Mönchengladbach side. Behind two assists from Joshua Kimmich and timely goals from Leroy Sané and Mathys Tel, the Bavarians were able to race out of town with three much needed points. For Tel, who notched the game winning goal in the 87th minute off of a great corner delivery from Kimmich, it was the latest in a series of impressive substitute appearances. In fact, @OptaFranz issued a tweet stating that Tel has scored six of his seven Bundesliga goals as a substitute — the most in the league since the beginning of last season: 6 – Bayern München’s Mathys Tel has scored six of his seven Bundesliga goals as a substitute, since the start of last season no other player has managed to score as many goals as a substitute in the competition as Tel (6). Impact. #BMGFCB pic.twitter.com/oAwTBmoffG— OptaFranz (@OptaFranz) September 2, 2023Tel’s electric ability was called into question by some fans last month after a subpar showing in the DFL-Supercup. Talk about a wild overreaction. Still just 19-years-old, Tel is, indeed, not ready yet to be “The Man”...however, he is growing, learning, eager, and willing to put in the hard work necessary to eventually be a regular starter in a “Top 5” league once his game matures.

Gladbach played exactly how most expected them to, but its defensive style ultimately created a lot of heavy legs, which eventually developed into a very advantageous situation for the Bavarians in the second half. Let’s not waste any more time, here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s take a look at the lineup: ⚫ ⚫#BMGFCB #packmas #MiaSanMia pic.twitter.com/tUAbuWV115— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) September 2, 2023Finally, Thomas Tuchel opted to play Harry Kane and Thomas Müller together, which is something many fans have been waiting to see. The duo did not necessarily click on all cylinders, but that had more to do with Gladbach’s compact defensive style than poor performances from the duo.The other big decision for Tuchel was with his center-backs. Again, Tuchel opted with Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae, which was not altogether shocking, given that the duo has been decent together so far. Otherwise, it was just Serge Gnabry being the odd-man out at wing. It was very clear from the outset that Gladbach was going to sit back and just wait and try to make the game a jumbled mess. Die Fohlen were so compact that any imprecision on Bayern Munich’s passing or any touch slightly too big was going to result in a temporary loss of possession or a clearance. There would be no unlocking Kane on this day, as the attacking continued its choppy run of play. Some slack can be given, just because of how much of a mess Gladbach made of Bayern Munich’s final third. Bayern Munich’s best opportunity early was when Müller fed a cutting Leroy Sané for a quick chance, but even then, Gladbach had a fortified position in front of the goal. Sané’s proactive movement would eventually play a big role in the match. The inclination is for many to think Gladbach played cowardly in not really even trying to win the contest, but what was it supposed to do? It was out-gunned and overmatched. Playing a grinding, mucked up defensive style was the only way it had a chance. Noussair Mazraoui has a real edge to his game, which is awesome. However, he needs to rein it in just a bit. He could become a real pest to opposing attackers if he can control his emotions a bit more. It seems like Tuchel had the same thoughts as he pulled Mazraoui at halftime after picking up a yellow card in the first half.In the 30th minute, Gladbach broke through off of a corner when Kou Itakura perfectly placed a header that took advantage of some terrible marking on the play. Many Bayern Munich fans started to clench up a bit because, well, they had already seen this movie before (several times). That goal seemed to throw Bayern Munich deeper into a malaise that zapped their energy until the squad went into the locker room for halftime. Kingsley Coman, for all of the good that he can bring to a match, looks lost right now. The first half was just very sloppy from Bayern Munich overall. Finally, in the 58th…

Borussia Mönchengladbach v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images Bayern Munich’s attack needs some work. Die Folgen: Bayern’s 1-0 win over Gladbach (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich traveled to Borussia Mönchengladbach to kick off the second half of the season and the Bavarians did well to avoid the trap of their many time bogey team by snaring a 1-0 victory. There is much to talk about from the match, so let’s dive in. Here are some quick hitters on the game: As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
Unsere Elf fürs erste Pflichtspiel 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣.#BMGFCB #packmas pic.twitter.com/Gy7A8wlwHV— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) January 11, 2025This went just about as expected once it was clear that Jamal Musiala was out. Thomas Müller stepped in for Musiala, Eric Dier started for Dayot Upamecano (suspension), and Leon Goretzka continue to get the nod over Aleksandar Pavlović, who has not looked like himself since returning from his broken collarbone injury. In addition, Manuel Neuer took back over in net and Leroy Sané was back over at left wing.As expected, Gladbach was playing very compact and expending a lot of energy in defending. Given how intense the defensive effort was, it was questionable on how long the group could sustain that kind of effort without mixing in any real threat of an attack. On the rare occasion that Bayern Munich did not have possession, it often won the ball back fairly easily. Gladbach was very sloppy early and Bayern Munich’s pressure did not make it easy on the home side. It was almost as if Gladbach had little to no composure on the ball. For all of the good traits Michael Olise has, he does force his shots too often. That will eventually be an issue if he cannot fine tune that a bit. If there was any critique of Bayern Munich’s dominant play early, it was the lack of involvement for Harry Kane. Bayern Munich’s crossing needs some work, eh?Goretzka had a strong chance to make it 1-0, but sent his attempt wide of the net.Müller nearly got that elusive first goal in the 23rd minute, but he hit the attempt too centrally. It was a great run by Müller, who was very active and looked good. The camera angles on the ESPN seemed different than normal and l cannot really tell yet if I liked them or not. Never one to beg for a penalty, it did seem as if referee Felix Zwayer missed a clear and obvious handball in the box. If the Rocco Reitz was protecting his face, it would have been fine to let it go. However, the ball made contact with Reitz’s hands which were over his head. Bayern Munich was ultimately held scoreless and the biggest takeaways were this: Olise’s forcing of shots is killing some possessions. When Sané gets frustrated with his lack of touches, he pushes in centrally and chokes away Kane’s space. Sané’s actions crowded the middle, which took away Bayern Munich’s best weapon on the day — Müller’s central runs toward the net. Kane draws so much attention, Müller could have made a living in the box. Bayern Munich’s passing and efficiency in that area were lacking. Did not love what Sané brought to the table against Gladbach. It seemed as if he quit on a few plays, sulked, and started to force things. Gladbach came out with more life in the second half and were ready to engage. Bayern Munich seemed a bit shocked with the increased level of intensity from the home side. Tim Kleindienst is much better than he is given credit for, but he would love to have a couple of those missed chances back. Kingsley Coman came on for Müller in the 60th minute, which seemed odd given how the veteran might have been the team’s best attacker through that part of the match.Olise earned a penalty in the 66th minute after a needless push by both Ulrich and Luca Netz. It was kind of weak to be honest, but it did go Bayern Munich’s way and Kane scored it to make it 1-0.Given how Coman played after coming on, it is not hard to envision Sané going to the bench. Sané missed a gold opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 71st minute.Bayern…
