Here are some quick hitters on the match:The starting lineup offered few surprises. Thomas Müller and Benjamin Pavard did not start, but it was likely a wise move to rotate. Müller is coming off both illness and injury, while Pavard could always use an off day give his own injury history. Both players also figure to have significant roles for their respective countries during the World Cup, so a little rest was okay by me. Noussair Mazraoui started for Pavard and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting started at striker in a more traditional alignment for the Bavarians. Jamal Musiala filled in at the No. 10 for Müller:STARTING XI

Not only did he engage in a hardcore battle with Robert Lewandowski, but he managed to avoid (barely at times) being goaded into making sloppy mistakes, losing his discipline, or falling into any traps. He wasn’t terrible or anything, but just seemed a little off.It was awesome to see Sven Ulreich get another clean sheet. His second act at Bayern Munich has been pretty damn good.I wonder if Robert Lewandowski regrets his move? Sure, he will get acclaim (at some point), but the transfer likely did not make him all that much richer, did not help his Ballon d’Or status, and likely won’t see him win much more than — maybe — a La Liga crown (which is very far from a sure thing). I guess the weather is nice.I don’t even hold a grudge or anything against Lewandowski. It was his right to move on, but from a competitive standpoint, it has to be frustrating to have to suit up every day with a bunch of players, who are supposed to be good rather than a group of teammates, who actually are good.Overall, it was a “take care of business”…

FC Bayern München Training Session Photo by R. Mitterer/FC Bayern via Getty Images It’s the first game of the year! One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! In a shocking twist, it looks like Joshua Kimmich has been moved to right-back. Otherwise the usual suspects start for Bayern Munich, including Harry Kane, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala. Looks like this is as close to a champagne XI as we might get. Mit dieser 1️⃣1️⃣ ins Testspiel gegen Basel! #FCBFCB #packmas pic.twitter.com/d3RdyaHnXf— FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) January 6, 2024As Bayern Munich gear up for the return of the Bundesliga, this test game vs FC Basel will be the team’s first and only chance to see how things are shaping up outside of training. Thomas Tuchel has most of his squad available, with the exception of a fit right-back. Konrad Laimer has been training alone and Noussair Mazraoui has been whisked away to AFCON despite being injured, leaving the club with only youngster Adam Aznou to slot into the position. Will we see a full star-studded lineup, or will Thomas Tuchel give some more fringe players/formations a chance? It’ll all depend on a few key names like Harry Kane, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, and the like. If they start, you’ll know it’s the champagne XI. FC Barcelona - Bayern Munich Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images Hansi Flick did not roll out the welcome mat for Bayern Munich... Die Folgen: Bayern’s 4-1 loss to Barça (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona squared off in the Champions League and this was not a game for the faint of heart. Neither coach backed down from their aggressive tactics, which left fans on the edge of their respective seats for much of the match. In the end, though, Barça out-classed Bayern Munich for a 4-1 win. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s open up with Vincent Kompany’s starting XI:
Here's how we line up Barcelona #FCBayern #MiaSanMia | #FCBFCB #UCL pic.twitter.com/Wa1QNK5eul— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) October 23, 2024Given the news of the past few days, this was exactly as expected. The surprise, of course, was the status of Jamal Musiala. After partaking in consecutive days of team training, it was assumed that the youngster would be ready to start the match against FC Barcelona. Instead, Thomas Müller got the nod. Less than a minute into the game, we found out who would falter first in the battle of the high-lines. Kim Min-jae got over-aggressive in trying to battle Robert Lewandowski in the build-up as the striker was doing his best to hold play up. That set off a chain of bad positioning, which led to Joshua Kimmich being left flat-footed as a last line of defense against a streaking Raphinha. It did not end well for Bayern Munich, as Raphinha timed his run perfectly, went in all alone, and had no one but Manuel Neuer to beat for a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game. While the chain of events started with Min-jae, it was a complete breakdown of the team’s structure and defense...all six players at the back (four defenders, two central midfielders) had a hand in that one. In the eighth minute, Harry Kane was “in” on FC Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Peña, but took just a bit too big of a touch, which allowed Peña to make a play on the ball. Just about a minute later, Thomas Müller sent in a beautiful cross, which Kane headed into the net, but the striker sloppily allowed himself to drift just offside. It was an unnecessary offside and the second consecutive play in which a Kane error prevented a goal. That was NOT the start that Kane was looking for, but he would make up for it in the 18th minute when Serge Gnabry sent in a cross — only this time, Kane stayed onside and put the ball into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. Neither Hansi Flick nor Vincent Kompany blinked with tactics, which made for a very nervy match. That frantic style of play would go on, with each team showing how threatening it could look, and that chaos would pay off for FC Barcelona. An aerial ball into Fermín López led to a duel between López and Min-jae. López gave the bigger, stronger center-back a subtle nudge, Min-jae headed the ball backward into no man’s land, which caused Manuel Neuer to storm out of his net. López then got to the ball, poked it over to Lewandowski, who was not going to miss an open net. Barca took a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute and Min-jae’s nightmare first half got worse. Just nine minutes later, Marc Casadó’s diagonal switch to a (once again) streaking Raphinha saw the FC Barcelona speedster smoke Raphaël Guerreiro and take advantage of a very tentative Dayot Upamecano to make it 3-1. Upamecano, who was really high up the pitch and left Guerreiro isolated, had a terrific effort to get to the spot and just didn’t go for the tackle. Weird. It was almost as if he pulled up at the last second. Regardless, his positioning prior to that was the bigger concern because there is no evidence that Guerreiro could contain Raphinha. What an absolute debacle of a first half from the backline. Just terrible...In fairness, though, Kane’s uncharacteristic off-touch and offside would have both likely led to goals. It could have been tied at 3-3. As they say, though, coulda, woulda, shoulda. The second half did not get any better for Bayern…

What’s so civil about the Champions League anyway?Prior to Bayern Munich’s 4-1 road loss to FC Barcelona, the Bavarians were serenaded with some vulgarities by the home crowd on the bus ride into the stadium. That certainly set the tone for the type of hostile environment that Bayern Munich would be walking into. As raucous as the crowd was, the FC Barcelona squad was equally as relentless in battering the Bavarians. Here is a breakdown of some of the pregame activities involving fans...
