RB Leipzig v FC Bayern Muenchen - BundesligaPhoto by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty ImagesIt goes without saying that Muller is unlike any other, but Goretzka can step up to the plate.Thomas Muller will be missing out for Germany’s final Euro 2020 group stage match against Hungary through a knee injury, but Bayern Munich teammate Leon Goretzka has said that he’s ready to step in and fill in the “Muller role.”Muller sustained his knee injury in the second half of Germany’s impressive 4-2 win over Portugal last weekend at the Allianz Arena, and his absence against Hungary will certainly be a bit of a blow for Joachim Low, but he has other options, including Goretzka. When Goretzka came on in the 73rd minute for Kai Havertz against Portugal, he adopted a more advanced role in the attacking third, which is something he said he’s ready to do again (Bundesliga), much like the role Muller plays for Bayern and Die Mannschaft. “I’ve got it in me to play the Thomas Müller role. In many ways, his position for the national time is similar to mine. It’s a position I’ve played in before for the national team, and I’m ready to help the team. The tournament can really begin for me now,” Goretzka explained. If Low decides to stick with three at the back and Joshua Kimmich and Robin Gosens as the wing backs, it’s likely that Goretzka would start in an advanced attacking role, much like Muller has, either on the left, right, or centrally. If Low decides to swtich to a back four, we could see Goretzka play a slightly advanced, box-to-box role in the center of midfield alongside Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan.Regardless of the starting lineup against Hungary, Goretzka knows that their opponents are no slouches, as they showed in the 1-1 draw with France in Budapest last weekend. “We have the toughest group by far, and that includes Hungary too, of course. You have to break down their defensive wall. We’re highly motivated and will find the right solutions. Our only goal is to win,” Goretzka said.Joachim Low shared Goretzka’s sentiment in knowing that the Hungarians will be a difficult defense to break down in his pre-match press conference:️ Joachim #Löw: "Hungary can leave you scratching your head with their unbelievable defensive work. There might not be as many opportunities in front of goal. We need to take the chances we get." #GERHUN #EURO2020 #GER #DieMannschaft pic.twitter.com/lhRWyn2egJ— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) June 22, 2021

Football EM - Autograph session GermanyPhoto by Federico Gambarini/picture alliance via Getty ImagesTuesday’s clash at Wembley will be Musiala’s first match against his former team after joining Germany back in February. With Germany set to lock horns with Gareth Southgate’s England, excitement and anxiety are building up among supporters of both parties. Even though they made it to the Round of 16, both teams failed to put forth solid performances in the group stage. Here we have Jamal Musiala, the Bayern Munich whiz kid and a former representative of the Three Lions, discussing his return to England.Musiala played alongside Jude Bellingham for England’s youth side not so long ago and has a very close relationship with the Dortmund player. He talked about them coming up against each other on Tuesday at Wembley. Musiala said:“I have spoken to Jude Bellingham about it. It’s cool that we’ve ended up playing them. I’m excited to see what happens. It will no doubt be a very tough game against a top side. He said that we’ll see each other and swap kits after the game. It will be nice to see him again. It’s been a few years since we played together for England. We even played against Germany, and now we’re coming up against each other at a major tournament.”18 - Aged 18 years and 117 days, Jamal Musiala became the youngest ever player to make an appearance for the German national team at a major tournament (World Cup & Euros). Premature. #EURO2020 #GER #GERHUN pic.twitter.com/DAwYah4ZJV— OptaFranz (@OptaFranz) June 23, 2021Musiala is Die Mannschaft’s youngest player ever to appear in a major tournament but that does not flatter him much. He said, “It is something special, but it doesn’t have any effect on my character or mind set. I always try to give my all. A record like that is nice in the moment, but you soon move on – that’s what you have to do.”England haven’t been able to win against Germany in a major tournament knockout game since 1966 and therefore consider the Germans to be one of their biggest rivals. Musiala is looking forward to keep the winning streak alive and to book a berth in the quarter finals: “I’m of course aware there is a rivalry that goes back a long way. I still remember it being a big deal in England whenever they played Germany. I’m looking forward to the next one now. For me personally, it’s just about winning the game and reaching the next round.”(Quotes via @iMiaSanMia on Twitter)

Germany v Italy: UEFA Nations League - League Path Group 3Photo by Joris Verwijst/BSR Agency/Getty ImagesThis will be the last test run before the World Cup in November. The final international break before the World Cup is upon us, and Hansi Flick has made his selections for the two Nations League games against Hungary and England.Bayern Munich’s usual seven have made the cut. In goal, Manuel Neuer dons the captain’s armband. There are no Bayern players in defense, but there are plenty in midfield and attack. Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, and Jamal Musiala return in midfield, while Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané step in the attack.Hansi Flick's Germany squad for our upcoming Nations League games vs. Hungary and England #GERHUN #ENGGER pic.twitter.com/XM6VaP9Lbq— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) September 15, 2022The main surprise callup of the month is Armel Bella Kotchap of Southampton. The 20-year old center-back used to play for the German U-21 team, but has earned his first ever senior callup after some solid performances this season. Also in defense, Robin Gosens returns to the national team for the first time since last September. There are no true right backs in the squad this time. Lukas Klostermann, who played very well at the position in June, misses out due to injury. It seems Jonas Hofmann will be deputizing as right-back again.Elsewhere, a lot of familiar names have returned. Borussia Dortmund’s Niklas Süle, Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Brandt, and Marco Reus, RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Timo Werner, Chelsea FC’s Kai Havertz, Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger, and Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündoğan have all made the cut. As this is the final international callup before the World Cup, expect to see most, if not all, of these players make the trip to Qatar.Germany will play Hungary in Leipzig on the 23rd before facing England at Wembley three days later. Two wins in these games will see Germany qualify for the Nations League finals for the first time in history.

Hansi Flick now in fine-tuning mode for the upcoming World Cup.It’s the international break, and that means while the Bayern Munich men’s squad aren’t in action this week, Hansi Flick’s Germany national team are. They finish off the Nations League group stage with their two final matches, starting Friday against group leaders Hungary, in what will also serve as a tune-up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.Germany are currently second in the group, having run a string of 1-1 draws in June (sound familiar?) before smashing Italy 5-2 in their final match of the summer. Hungary, meanwhile, beat mighty England twice — 1-0 on June 4th and 4-0 on June 14th. The Germans will face England on Monday.Team newsFlick’s side were hit with a cruel reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is very much still around, as Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka have had to withdraw from the squad following positive tests, along with Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt — who is also ill but has not tested positive, so it might be something else.Lukas Klostermann of RB Leipzig, who made his case as starting right-back in the national team squad in June, is separately out injured.Hoffenheim keeper Oliver Baumann and VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Maximilian Arnold have been called up in place of the late withdrawals, though with a view to World Cup preparations, it’s unlikely players more firmly outside of the first choice will see significant action.Hopefully that’s the last of the COVID cases for now, but it’s another shot across the bow from the rapidly-evolving virus, and the DFB should step up its mitigation plans to prevent chaos from happening at the tournament. Klara Bühl and Lea Schüller, key players on the women’s team, both tested positive and missed key games in the course of EURO 2022.So, how will the team selection look? Flick’s tactics came into focus in the four Nations League games this June, and he’ll likely stick close to Plan A for these two. However, he’ll also need to keep in mind the demands of the season in order to avoid wearing out his top players (cough, Thomas Müller) too much before the tournament even begins. There’s not a lot of rest between Friday and Monday, so Flick will have to choose carefully who features more in which game.As Kimmich points out here, the tactical demands will be different:️ Kimmich on #GERHUN: "Hungary are tricky opponents. I've rarely played against a side that are as disciplined defensively as them. Not this time, though. Today, Hansi Flick and his team took the ICE from Frankfurt to Leipzig. In the end, they settled on the train, which is the most eco-friendly way you can travel. As a matter of fact, Deutsche Bahn recently swapped their signature red stripe on certain ICE trains to green to advocate their low-carbon, eco-friendly ways.Germany has one of the best and most extensive rail systems in Europe. They were one of the first ever countries to develop a high speed rail system, and are currently running trains that can reach up to 330km/h, or over 200mph for anyone unfamiliar with the metric system. Many travelers are left seething by 30 minute delays on a regular basis, sometimes even longer. See, Deutsche Bahn is infamous for squeezing in more trains than the tracks can handle, which results in hefty delays. What’s more, due to the less than ideal track conditions, a lot of ICE trains are prohibited from reaching their top speeds, which is why the latest ICE model, ICE 4, was deliberately (and more cheaply) designed to only reach 250kmh.MediaKTX-Sancheon: Korea’s flagship train model. Now, Frankfurt and Leipzig are about 300 kilometers (186 miles) apart. Here are some quick hitters on the match:Hansi Flick rolled with a pretty conventional lineup. You might lament the lack of Jamal Musiala in the starting XI, but I was okay with with for a couple of reasons. First, he has been banged up a bit, so any extra rest he can get is good. Second, he is such a game-changer, I actually like him as a substitute player...right now. That could change in time, but for this match, Musiala starting on the bench was all good with me:The Germany XI to play Hungary this evening #GERHUN pic.twitter.com/FWRVrk5EtE— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) September 23, 2022Flick is going to give Jonas Hofmann a strong look at right-back to see if this is a feasible option for the World Cup. They play with pace, aggression, and a no-fear attitude. The squad has some real talent and is vastly underrated by most people. After a relatively shaky start, Germany’s backline and midfield got it together.Hungary’s goal was a product of Ádám Szalai out-hustling Thomas Müller to get to the front post and then deftly flick the ball toward the back post for a goal. What an effort...a true highlight for Hungary after being on their heels:Oh my, Ádám Szalai this was FILTHY!

He looked slow and a bit out of it and never got into the flow of the match. The first half was really confounding for Germany. At times, they controlled play, but could do nothing with their possession.Hungary’s style of play was clearly frustrating the Germans.Hansi Flick switched to a back-three based formation for the second half with Thilo Kehrer coming on for Serge Gnabry.Péter Gulácsi’s 51st minute save on Leroy Sané was incredible from such a close-range. Gulácsi didn’t really have to move, but that was a rocket from Sané.Germany’s pace and sense of urgency began to wear down Hungary. If only Germany had played that way for the entirety of the match.Hungary’s press had lot some of its zip by about the 60th minute. Germany had the edge in momentum and was trying like hell to make something happen.Flick tried to inject some fresh legs in at the 69 minute mark as Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala came on for Timo Werner and İlkay Gündoğan.Like Bayern Munich, Germany’s efficiency with their chance was simply not good enough. Timo Werner, Sané, Joshua Kimmich, and Müller all had good chances, but could not convert. For what it is worth, Kimmich and Sané each had a strong showing, aside of their inability to finish.Overall, it was a pretty awful performance. Germany never got in sync, never looked…

DFB/ Thomas Böcker pic.twitter.com/rgtEogpbgF— German Football (@DFB_Team_EN) June 19, 2024After an imperious 5-1 win over Scotland that put the rest of the tournament on notice, Germany look to secure qualification to the next round as soon as possible. Doing so will involve beating Hungary, a team that promises to be a tougher test than recent opponents. The question on everyone’s lips: Can Julian Nagelsmann keep the momentum going? When he was in charge of Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann loved to tinker. It often cost him games, and possibly even his job in the end. Now, the 36-year-old coach seems to be a reformed man, and his current lineup is his favorite. DFB/ Thomas Böcker pic.twitter.com/rgtEogpbgF— German Football (@DFB_Team_EN) June 19, 2024Neuer and İlkay Gündoğan had both come under fire of late and both made good statements. Neuer had the aforementioned clean sheet and Gündoğan had a goal and an assist. One other player who had heard some detractors was Kai Havertz and he did not fare nearly as well as his two teammates. Havertz could find his starting spot in jeopardy at some point, but it seems like Nagelsmann is not quite ready to pull the trigger on that just yet. Havertz will need to really start to produce to quiet the noise surrounding him. Luckily for Havertz, it is not as if Füllkrug is seizing every opportunity (though he has been better than Havertz so far). It would also be great to see Maximilian Beier get some run at some point. Jamal Musiala scored the opener and stayed hot. The youngster put forth a solid showing. It is good to see Musiala playing with such confidence. Sure, he had a few dribble-into-a-wall moments, but this is a very dangerous version of Musiala.Chris Führich put in a nice shift as a substitute by completing 13/14 passes, winning both ground duels, and only losing possession once. Hungary was game, but did not seriously threaten Germany. This has turned out to be a very fortuitous draw for the Germans. Scotland was overwhelmed by the moment, Hungary just could not push itself to the level needed, and Switzerland just is not the same as it was only a couple of years back. Center-backs Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rüdiger put in a very solid showing, while Joshua Kimmich and Maximilian Mittelstädt might have been even better. The backline is really coming along nicely for Nagelsmann. Kimmich completed 97% of his passes (71 of 73) and only lost possession five times. Once again, the Bayern Munich star was spectacular. Overall, Germany did what it needed to do. The knockout stage milestone has been achieved and fans can exhale a bit. Now, it is a matter of the squad continuing to improve to reach its potential. Switzerland could be a test, but Germany just needs to keep pushing forward and maintain its focus. Sure, that game will not mean much, but Nagelsmann should avoid letting any doubt seep into this squad. Germany is riding high, so there is no reason to let it risk coming back down. Germany v Denmark: Round of 16 - UEFA EURO 2024 Photo by Markus Gilliar - GES Sportfoto/Getty Images A new era for Germany is here! One hour until kickoff: We have our lineup! Julian Nagelsmann fields a normal 4-2-3-1 with two defensive mids and Niklas Füllkrug up top. Kai Havertz finally starts at a position other than striker, and will likely play while interchanging with Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. This will also be ter Stegen’s first game as the new German #1.

Who made this schedule? Anyway, once again we return to Germany coverage, and once again it’s a Germany vs Hungary game. These guys seem to face the Germans practically every year — the only changes this time are:All the 2014 World Cup veterans have retired from international duty. This German NT callup features the fewest number of Bayern Munich players on the roster. Still, the club is rather well-represented, with Julian Nagelsmann being a former Bayern Munich coach and Joshua Kimmich donning the captain’s armband. However, with players like Florian Wirtz slowly stepping into the limelight (and Kai Havertz refuses to let it go ...) it’s going to be a very different Germany compared to what people are used to. For better or worse, it’s time for a new era. While you’re waiting for the game, why not check out our preview podcast? Germany v Hungary -UEFA Nations league Photo by Geert van Erven/Soccrates/Getty Images What a match for Germany! Die Folgen: Germany’s 5-0 win over Hungary (Bavarian Football Works)Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has the German national team absolutely humming, which is bad news for the rest of Europe. Sure, it is far too early to start making any declarations about Germany’s prowess for the World Cup, but things are looking good — very good — at the moment. The match resulted in a complete and utter dismantling of Hungary, a squad that can create problems for its opponents. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s take a look at Nagelsmann’s starting XI: Mit dieser 11 starten wir heute gegen Ungarn #dfbteam #gerhun
DFB/Thomas Böcker pic.twitter.com/3haMcbuoKn— DFB-Team (@DFB_Team) September 7, 2024Everything went as expected. The only real spot up for debate was left-back where David Raum got the nod over Maximilian Mittelstädt. Otherwise, the manager directly addressed where he was going at the other positions on the pitch. Early on, Germany was feeling out the game and how to work best together. Hungary was active and played a frenetic pace at times, which made it hard on the Germans to get aligned.I still like Dominik Szoboszlai a lot as a player. He is a player who can impact games in such a positive way. Germany had a really nice sequence in the 21st minute that went from Florian Wirtz to Jamal Musiala to Niclas Füllkrug, but the West Ham United man just did not get a good piece of the ball on his shot attempt, which ended up being a semi-hard groundball right at the goalkeeper. Füllkrug knows he has to do better with that attempt. Musiala and Wirtz really could be special together. At times, there was a certain panache to the German game. In the 27th minute, Füllkrug would make up for it...this time, ensuring Musiala got the assist. The play went from Wirtz to Raum to Musiala to Füllkrug — and Nagelsmann really might be onto something with Wirtz and Musiala playing in the half-spaces with the flexibility to roam. In the 57th minute, Musiala somehow outfoxed two defenders and the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. A long through-ball from Wirtz sent in Musiala, whose touch almost betrayed him, but the crafty youngster found a way to gather the ball and himself to rifle in a near post shot that seemed to shock Hungary goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.Just nine minutes later Wirtz added a goal of his own to make it 3-0. The German attacking group was a problem for Hungary. Musiala added the assist and somewhere, the Bayern Munich brass just start transferring funds into an undisclosed account to start preparing for the 2025 summer transfer window. This was exactly the kind of performance from Musiala that keeps Bayern Munich fans believing that when Musiala inevitably puts it all together, there will be a lot of pain in the future for the club’s opponents. Unfortunately, it is also the kind of performance that will help convince clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool FC, FC Barcelona, and Real Madrid that Musiala is just the kind of player worth emptying your coffers for. Despite being subbed out relatively early for Aleksandar Pavlović, Pascal Groß turned in a nice shift for Germany. Marc-André ter Stegen did not get much action, but did well in stepping up in his new role. It might seem weird to say in a shutout, but the Germany backline needs some work (especially at the center-back position). Nico Schlotterbeck and Jonathan Tah were...okay. Against better teams, they will need to be a lot, well, better. That said, it was progress and that is the most important thing at this stage. In the 77th minute, the “Musiala-Wirtz Show” struck again as the due combined to set up Pavlović for a goal. Musiala picked up his third assist and Germany led 4-0. Meanwhile, Gulácsi will not want to remember much about this game. Germany was just absolutely pouring it on. In the 81st minute, Kai Havertz added a PK to make it 5-0 and the Nagelsmann Era might really be hitting…
