He used to sit at the door (of the husainiyeh). In respect of the mourners who used to enter, he would stand up. A young man, who was mentally challenged, entered, wearing torn shoes and old clothes. In front of him too, Haj Qasem stood up. Greeted him with salaam and welcomed him. Thereafter, respectfully hugged him, kissed his face and sat him down in a corner.

Hearing people say, "Hajj Qasem's house of elegy recitation", would hurt him. He said, "It is better to name this place so that it is recognized by that name." He endowed (wakf) his house (to Allah) and named it "Bayt Az Zehra" (House of Lady Fatima Zehra (A)) so that nobody calls that place by his own name.

Hajj Qasem invited us to the mourning ceremony of his village. We thought it would be a grand ceremony, with special formalities and provisions. Twenty people were sitting around each other at his father's house. One religious scholar arrived, offered congregational prayers, recited a few minutes of elegy and left. He said, "We organise a very simple mourning ceremony in the village, just like the olden times". Sometimes, he would come from Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, just to attend these simple gatherings.

Everyone was waiting for the one who recites elegy. Someone pointed at a young man of seventeen-eighteen years and said, "The elegy reciter has arrived." Hajj Qasem stood up and went to welcome him and after the mourning ceremony, even escorted him out like he was a high profile elegy-reciter, like (he was) a guest of honour.
