Holy Defense Week, September 21st to 28th:
What is Holy Defense Week of Iran and why is it named so?
September 21st to 28th marks the Holy Defense Week in Iran. It is the first week when Iraq imposed war on Iran. This war started in 1980 and continued till 1988.
The reason behind naming the first week of war as the sacred week is; as much as the beginning of the war was bitter and acrimonious, but this war rewarded the warriors with martyrdom which in normal circumstances is not easily achieved.
Imam Khomeini (RA) has said that the war continues until the elimination of the sedition. War is a blessing which can be pleasant with its beginning and cannot become sacred just with the acceptance of a letter (in order to stop the war). Hence one cannot imagine the end of the war as 'Holy'. Since the war continues until the evil remain.
Thirty-six years ago, Sadaam Hussein, supported by major Western and regional states, launched a massive military invasion of Iran. It came less than two years after the Islamic Revolution.
A large number of volunteers joined the country's armed forces to defend their country against the Iraqi aggression, under the leadership of the late Imam Khomeini.
