Countering russian glide bombs and drones: how the NATO–Ukraine JATEC Centre coordinates this effort. (English below)

Countering russian glide bombs and drones: how the NATO–Ukraine JATEC Centre coordinates this effort.
The search for and implementation of technological solutions to combat russian glide bombs and fiber-optic-controlled drones is a top priority for the NATO–Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) in 2025.
This was reported by Colonel Valerii Vyshnivskyi, Senior National Representative of Ukraine to JATEC and Director of Programme Implementation at the Centre, according to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
He noted that this issue was a central topic during the recent Senior Advisory Board meeting of JATEC held in Kyiv.
The board—which included representatives from NATO leadership, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine—reviewed several projects aimed at addressing these challenges and approved their respective budgets.
The next major step will be the NATO Innovation Challenge, a hackathon scheduled for 20 June in Tallinn, Estonia. The goal of this competition is to identify technologies capable of detecting and neutralizing fiber-optic FPV drones, which pose one of the most significant threats in today’s warfare.
Previously, the JATEC team organized a NATO Innovation Challenge focused on countering glide bombs.
Colonel Valerii Vyshnivskyi highlighted that, for the first time, Ukrainian experts were included as members of the jury evaluating the submitted proposals during that challenge.
“These are the issues that must be resolved to ensure success on the battlefield, and the JATEC team is actively working to that end,” added Colonel Valerii Vyshnivskyi.
Following testing, the selected solutions will be handed over to Ukraine for deployment in combat operations.
The NATO–Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) is the first joint institution of its kind in the history of Ukraine and the Alliance, dedicated to building joint defence capabilities.
