MediaUnited Nations, Oct 28: The head of the UN nuclear agency said Tuesday there has been no indication Iran has tried to repair or reconstruct its nuclear facilities damaged in US and Israeli military strikes this year or last year.President Donald Trump has said one of the major reasons the U.S. went to war with Iran on Feb. 28 was to deny Tehran the ability to develop nuclear weapons, even as he has insisted that strikes the US carried out on Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025 “obliterated” the country's atomic program.During a UN Security Council meeting, International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi urged Iran to give inspectors access to all nuclear sites, including those damaged in the military attacks. The IAEA has not been able to verify the status of Iran's stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium since the U.S. bombed its sites last year. However, Grossi said that “since June 2025, we have not identified any activity to repair or reconstruct any of the facilities damaged in the military attacks of 2025 and 2026."Trump has consistently downplayed the economic impact of the Iran war, which has emerged as a liability for Republicans heading into next week's midterm elections, and has argued that higher fuel prices are worth paying to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. The White House didn't immediately respond Tuesday evening to a request for comment on Grossi's remarks.Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful. However, the IAEA says the country has a stockpile of 440.9 kilograms (972 pounds) of uranium enriched up to 60% purity — a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.The UN meeting on Tuesday was called by Bahrain, Denmark, Latvia, France, the United Kingdom and United States after the IAEA referred Iran to the Security Council for failing to comply with its nuclear nonproliferation obligations. Russia and China, allies of Iran, tried unsuccessfully to prevent the meeting.Under those obligations, which are part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran is legally bound to declare all nuclear material and activities and allow IAEA inspectors to verify that none of it is being diverted from peaceful uses.Iran's UN deputy ambassador Gholamhossein Darzi attacked the council for its silence after the US-Israeli attacks, denouncing their “wars of aggression against Iran” and accusing the US of committing war crimes against the Iranian people. He never mentioned the IAEA's unanswered questions or the demand to return its inspectors. Instead, he asserted that “Israel possesses nuclear weapons, yet your concern is the absence of inspectors in Iran.” Israel has never confirmed that it possesses nuclear weapons.US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz called Iran a “brutal dictatorship” and asked if the Iranian ambassador wanted to apologize to Bahrain's envoy, a council member, for attacking his country.“We've heard tireless allegations against the United States, ” he said. “What we have not heard today is an explanation for Iran's continued failure to satisfy its safeguard obligations.”The IAEA asked Iran for answers, Waltz said, and it would be smart for the Iranian representative to start providing some answers.“Your lies are no good here,” he said.

MediaBillings, Oct 28: President Donald Trump said Tuesday his administration is “terminating” a Biden-era rule that aimed to cut planet-warming emissions of methane from oil and gas drilling.Trump said during a campaign rally in Texas that the change would save consumers and energy producers USD 45 billion and unlock 210 million barrels of oil. That's equivalent to about 10 days of US petroleum consumption. The move aims to encourage more domestic drilling as Trump faces criticism over high fuel prices amid the US war in Iran.Methane is responsible for about a third of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, scientists estimate.Cuts in methane emissions have emerged in recent years as a global priority to slow the rate of climate change. Oil and gas operations are the largest industrial source of methane, which is the main component in natural gas and far more potent to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide in the short term. The invisible gas leaks from equipment and is released into the atmosphere or burned off as a waste product by oil drillers.Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin previewed the changes last month, saying they would eliminate the agency's “Super Emitter Program” that requires companies to investigate and repair major methane releases from oil and natural gas facilities. The agency would also set less restrictive standards for small oil and gas wells. The loosening of the emissions rule comes as Trump and Republicans in Congress have been methodically dismantling climate policies enacted under former President Joe Biden. That's included the revocation of a scientific finding that was central to US action on greenhouse gas emissions, lower fuel economy standards for vehicles and a move to repeal emission restrictions for coal and natural gas power plants.Environmental groups criticized the latest rollback. They said it lets companies continue polluting the atmosphere with gas that could be captured and provide energy to millions of households.“It will impose a heavier pollution burden on our front-line communities and make our energy sector less efficient,” said Max Lopez, an Environmental Law & Policy Center attorney.Zeldin has said the methane rule would have cost USD 18 billion and was holding back the US energy industry.“The Trump EPA is committed to fixing this so the US can reach its full energy potential,” he said last month. The Biden methane rule was announced by officials including former Vice President Kamala Harris during a 2023 UN climate conference in the United Arab Emirates.Federal officials under Biden said it would prevent an estimated 58 million tons (52.6 million metric tonnes) of methane emissions by 2038 and reduce other pollutants that cause health problems.By 2034, the rule was projected to yield USD 98 billion in benefits. That figure was derived by calculating the future “social costs” of greenhouse gas emissions on public health and the environment, an approach rejected by Trump's EPA.While previous regulations focused only on new oil and gas wells in the US, the Biden rule regulated existing wells. Operators also would have needed to plug leaking methane from smaller wells that produce just 6% of the nation's oil and gas while accounting for up to half all methane emissions from oil and gas fields. The final rule was published in 2024. The EPA last year imposed an 18-month delay to give companies time to meet new inspection requirements and other provisions. The rule was crafted to be coordinated with a methane fee, approved in the 2022 climate law. The fee program would have levied a “waste emissions charge” of as much as USD 1,500 per metric ton of methane on energy producers that exceed a certain level of methane emissions. The fee marked the first time the US government directly imposed a fee, or tax, on greenhouse gas emissions. Congress repealed it weeks after Trump took office.Officials also tried to rein in methane from oil and gas under former President Barack Obama, but that effort was scaled back during Trump's…
MediaShendi, Oct 28: More than 100 people were killed in a Sudanese military drone strike on a busy market in Nyala, the capital city of the South Darfur province in southwestern Sudan, said Emergency Lawyers, a rights group tracking violence in the country, in a statement Tuesday. The strike, which it says happened Monday evening, also injured 113 people. The group said many of those killed and injured were women and children. The group blamed the Sudanese military for the strike on the market, condemning the attack.“This massacre transformed a civilian marketplace into a scene of mass killing and injury and is an assault that threatens the lives of residents and compounds their suffering amid the ongoing war,” the group said in a statement. It called for an independent investigation into the strike.Doctors Without Borders, which is also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF, said earlier that 36 bodies arrived at its hospital in Nyala and reported seeing 150 injured in its emergency room. Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province, is controlled by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces, which has been fighting with the Sudanese army since 2023.Drone warfare has been a staple of this war but in recent weeks, a massive escalation of drone strikes by both the RSF and the Sudanese army has killed hundreds. Both warring parties have increasingly launched explosive-laden drones that, in multiple cases, targeted civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, dams, schools, markets and displacement camps. Drone strikes have become the deadliest threat to civilians in this conflict, according to the UN.The conflict has created the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with about 34 million people — almost two out of every three Sudanese — needing assistance, according to the UN.Sudan's war started in April 2023 when tensions between the military and the RSF exploded into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and spread across the country.
Previous strike leaves parts of Sudan without powerLarge parts of Sudan's capital were without electricity for more than 12 hours Tuesday after a drone strike on a major power substation, according to an electric company official. The attack left hospitals and bakeries dependent on generators and limited water supplies across Khartoum. The state-run Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company acknowledged “serious damage and technical faults” to the distribution network and several main stations and power lines but didn't explain the reason in a statement. It apologized to residents across Khartoum state for repeated and prolonged outages.A company official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said a drone attack hit the Al-Markhiyat transformer station in Omdurman, on the outskirts of Khartoum. He said it is the second to hit the station this year, blaming it on the country's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The RSF has been at war with the Sudanese military for more than three years. Sudan's war began in April 2023, when simmering tensions between the military and the RSF exploded into open fighting in Khartoum and spread across the country.Deadly drone attacks across Sudan have been carried out by the two rival forces. But those attacks have become rare in Khartoum since the Sudanese military took control of the capital in May 2025, after years of brutal fighting between the military and the RSF.The UN has expressed concern over the use of drones across Sudan, saying they have been killing civilians, including children, and are disrupting essential services. The official who spoke to AP said technical teams are still assessing the damage, describing the strike as major. He estimated that 60 per cent of the power supply in the capital could be affected, predicting that water stations will be most affected.A resident living near the Al-Markhiyat transformer station in Omdurman said he heard a drone shortly before the blast.“At around 4:30 in the morning, on my way…

MediaSrinagar, Oct 28: Senior National Conference leader and Cabinet Minister Sakina Itoo Wednesday ruled out any dissent or rebellion within the ruling party following the recent Cabinet expansion, maintaining that the National Conference is like a family where members may have different opinions but remain united.Responding to questions about reported resentment among senior party leaders, including Mubarak Gul and Abdul Majeed Larmi, over their exclusion from the expanded Council of Ministers, Sakina Itoo sought to downplay the controversy, saying differences of opinion should not be mistaken for divisions within the party. She maintained that the National Conference remains united and that its leaders and legislators continue to work for the party irrespective of the responsibilities assigned to them.Itoo said party members have every democratic right to express their views and grievances, adding that such expressions should not necessarily be interpreted as protests against the leadership. Her remarks come amid reports of dissatisfaction among some senior National Conference legislators following Tuesday's Cabinet expansion, which saw Ali Mohammad Sagar, Shamima Firdous, Mir Saifullah and Altaf Ahmad Kaloo inducted as ministers in the Omar Abdullah-led government.Senior leader Mubarak Gul's exclusion prompted protests by his supporters at the National Conference headquarters in Srinagar, while Abdul Majeed Larmi publicly expressed disappointment over not being considered for a ministerial berth despite his seniority and long association with the party.Gul was subsequently appointed general secretary of the National Conference.Seeking to put the controversy to rest, Sakina Itoo maintained that ministerial positions are not the only opportunities available to party leaders, who can continue serving the organisation and the public in different capacities. The Cabinet expansion has brought the Omar Abdullah-led Council of Ministers to its maximum permissible strength of nine, including the Chief Minister. MediaMumbai, Oct 28: After a blockbuster IPO, Jio Platforms' Managing Director Akash Ambani on Wednesday vowed to take the company, which is at the core of making digital connectivity affordable for Indians, to greater heights and democratise newer technologies, including space connectivity.Speaking ahead of the listing of the company's shares following the Rs 30,213 crore issue, Ambani said this is not a finish line but a start line for the company, and promised to grow investor wealth like its parent Reliance Industries has done over nearly 50 years now."We promise to take Jio to greater heights of growth, excellence and reputation in India and the world," the 35-year-old Akash Ambani said at the listing ceremony at NSE, which was also attended by his parents Mukesh and Nita Ambani, siblings Isha and Anant, and also grandmother Kokilaben. The responsibility of the next generation of Ambanis is not just to preserve what they have inherited, but to make Jio bigger, better and more meaningful for India, Akash Ambani said at the ceremony where both his siblings also spoke.Speaking before him, Anant said Jio was an idea seeded by Isha, which was adopted and nurtured by her twin brother Akash. Their 69-year-old father Mukesh -- the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries -- watched the proceedings accompanied by his wife Nita, and was seen becoming emotional as the next generation took the centre stage.Isha said Akash has worked hard for the last 13 years to build and grow Jio as India's largest telco with over 53 crore subscribers.Recalling their grandfather Dhirubhai's maxim of 'Growth is life', Isha also vowed to keep building and create value for all the shareholders.Spelling out Jio's vision for the future, Akash said that in the first ten years, Jio democratised data."In our next ten (years), we want to democratise every technology that can transform Indian lives: AI, cloud, connected devices, connectivity even from space and digital services not yet imagined," he said. The true value of technology lies in the opportunity it creates, the barriers it removes and the lives it improves, Akash said.He said the company's ambition is a digital society with Jio Platforms at its core, where connectivity, computing and intelligence work together seamlessly. For many years, the world looked at India as a consumer of technology, Akash said, adding that it is now emerging as its creator. One day, Jio Platforms will become one of the greatest technology companies in the world, Akash said, adding, "we are now ready to take the tricolour global".The response to the IPO illustrates the investors' confidence in India's potential, Akash said, pointing out that the investor response surpassed his own imagination as well. The company's offering saw a demand of Rs 7.5 lakh crore through 1.3 crore applications, he said, stressing that the entire issue was subscribed within 95 minutes of the launch.Stating that this was a deeply humbling experience, and one which has left him with a profound sense of responsibility, Akash said, "our success is measured by the ambitions we encourage and the potential we unlock towards a better India."The entire Ambani clan, including the next-generation kids, rang the bell as the clock struck 10 am.The Jio Platforms scrip was trading 21.42 per cent up at Rs 1,358.7 a piece on the BSE at 1101 hrs as against 0.89 per cent correction on the benchmark.
