Lai sought a court order to prohibit the defamation, as well as an apology and damages. However, his request for a jury trial was denied by the judge, citing the case's complex legal and factual issues.
The judge noted that the presiding judge could review the documents in advance, allowing for a more efficient trial process. Lai is also required to pay HK$300,000 in legal costs to Ta Kung Pao.
This ruling indicates that to achieve the desired outcome, the court will not use a jury in any cases related to Jimmy Lai.
