Reiner has just received the sad news that his mother passed away this morning, September 2, 2024.

Reiner was informed that she was not well, was bedridden and it was only a matter of time before she passed away.

For this reason, Reiner had applied to the prison to be taken to his mother's deathbed in Bremen so that he could say goodbye to her.

The prison would have granted this on the condition that he would only be allowed to visit her one last time in handcuffs and shackles and under guard by armed officers, if the request had been approved at all. Reiner refused so as not to inflict any additional trauma on his dying mother in her final days.

Anyone wishing to send their condolences to Reiner is welcome to do so. His postal address in the prison is known.

We are appalled that Reiner would perhaps only have been granted a humane last visit to his elderly and dying mother under these conditions, which would have been an ordeal for both of them. We mourn with him and his family and are very sad that we cannot physically be there for him right now. But we can send him comforting thoughts and lines.

The defense has filed a motion to suspend tomorrow's trial so that Reiner can come to rest and mourn. It is not yet known whether the application will be granted.
