July 20: Serving the Glory of God

#Devotional

2 Samuel 5:1–6:23; 1 Peter 4:1–11; Psalm 136:1–26

When we avoid community, we may develop an inflated opinion of our own character. It’s easy to think we’re kind people when we’re not held accountable to others. It’s easy to think we’re always right when no one disagrees with us. Conversely, it’s in our relationships that our true selves are often revealed. When we’re actively involved in a community, we face hundreds of instances where we need to make choices. These choices either serve others, or they serve our own desires.

When Peter states,
“Above all, keep your love for one another constant, because love covers a large number of sins” (1 Pet 4:8),
he’s saying that choosing to love often sets all motives in the right place. It dispels our own pride and puts issues into perspective. When we are truly loving others, it’s not about our pride or “being right.” It’s about helping others grow in faith by using our God-given gifts.

Peter goes on to show just what this looks like:
“Be hospitable without complaining. Just as each one has received a gift, use it for serving one another, as good stewards of the varied grace of God. If anyone speaks, let it be as the oracles of God; if anyone serves, let it be as by the strength that God provides, so that in all things God will be glorified through Jesus Christ” (1 Pet 4:9–11).
When we love others and use our gifts for their benefit, our actions do more than serve the other. Since they find their origin in Christ’s love, they serve to honor and glorify Christ.

Living in community with others may often be difficult. We’ll meet with challenging people and situations that will require us to continually pray to the giver of gifts for renewed strength and the ability to serve. We’ll face conflict that needs to be met with wisdom and love. Through prayer and the work of God in our lives, we can love and serve others with the love of Christ.

How are you exerting your own pride in your relationships with others? How can you serve them with your unique, God-given gifts?
July 20 - Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother-in-Law

#LifeOfChrist

“When Jesus came into Peter’s home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and waited on Him” (Matthew 8:14–15).

Through the centuries, most male Jews have displayed much preju-dice toward women, as evidenced by the old prayer,
“Lord, I thank Thee that I was not born a slave, a Gentile, or a woman.”
But here Jesus, just as with the leper and the Gentile centurion, shows mercy and compassion to an outsider—a woman—someone not favored by the Jewish establishment. He cuts through the unscriptural attitude of proud Jewish men to demonstrate again that physical health, race, status, or a person’s sex gained no advantage with Him.

When Jesus arrived at Peter’s home with some of the disciples, Peter’s mother-in-law was ill, and Mark adds,
“Immediately they spoke to Jesus about her” (Mark 1:30).
Luke the physician notes that she had
“a high fever” (Luke 4:38),
though none of the narratives says what caused her illness. That the fever was high suggests she was seriously ill and maybe in danger of death.

Christ once again responded without delay and healed Peter’s mother-in-law immediately. She was not only a woman but also a Jew, which meant that although the Lord had warned the Jews about presuming upon salvation, He had not completely forsaken them, as ministry to Peter’s relative powerfully showed. The fact that salvation was available to faithful Gentiles did not mean it was now unavailable to faithful Jews. Paul later wrote,
“God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. . . . In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice” (Rom. 11:2, 5).

Ask Yourself

Among all religions, none has a higher view of women than does Christianity. And yet, it’s fair to ask ourselves if chauvinism is present within our hearts. Christ honored women. So should we.

Jesus Christ is coming back, either for you, or against you....

The gospel is not "God helps those who help themselves." It is God saving those who could never save themselves.

We bring our sin. Christ brings His righteousness.

Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

That is astonishingly good news.

To us, waiting may be wasting. But to God, waiting is working.
