Christians have nothing to be afraid of.

If we live today, then we get to live for Jesus. If we die today, then we get to go home to be with Jesus.

WIN / WIN.

September 30: Key Players and Main Narratives

#Devotional
Malachi 2:10–4:6; Acts 28:1–31; Job 31:23–40
The book of Acts ends on a somewhat unsatisfying note. After all that Paul has been through—imprisonment, trial, shipwreck—we expect a showdown with Caesar or mass conversions of the Jews. Instead, the plot seems to sputter out.

How often do we try to excuse ourselves as Edom did—to defend our behavior as justifiable retribution for previous offenses? What does God think about the state of our hearts and the actions we take against others as a result?

How must your plan of action change, today, in light of God’s will and His standard?

Paul arrives in Rome and appeals to the Jews living there. He quotes Isaiah to the Jewish leaders: “You will keep on hearing, and will never understand, and you will keep on seeing and will never perceive” (Acts 28:26). When they fail to respond, Paul determines to reach out to the Gentiles. “They also will listen” (Acts 28:28) and will respond differently.

The poignant end of this book leaves Paul “proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance” (Acts 28:31). Facing either rejection or reception, he continues proclaiming the good news to both Jew and Gentile.

Paul is a key player in the Church that is being gathered by Jesus Christ, but the drama cannot end with Paul. Jesus is the main character in the story of humanity’s redemption. The book of Acts leaves the ending open so that we can pick it up and carry it forward. The work of Jesus, through His Church, continues to the present day, and Jesus is using both you and me in His grand narrative.

How do you see your life as a story that honors God as the key player?

September 30 - Belief Contrasted with Unbelief

#LifeOfChrist

“‘He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God’” (John 3:18–21).

Although God graciously has offered the world salvation through the work of Christ, that salvation is not appropriated except by penitent faith. The lost are condemned because they have “not believed in [literally, “believed into”] the name of the only begotten Son of God.” While the final sentencing of those who reject Christ is still future (cf. 5:28–29), their judgment will merely consummate what has already begun.

Jesus described judgment by contrasting light and darkness. Christ is the Light—He came into the world and “enlightens every man” (John 1:9). But people refuse to come to the Light because they love the darkness where their evil deeds will not be exposed. The Light reveals their sin. But as a result, they seal their own condemnation because they reject the only One who can save them from their spiritual darkness.

In contrast, believers hate their sin and love righteousness (1 John 2:3–6), so they willingly come to the light because they have nothing to hide and no reason to fear what the light will reveal.

Ask Yourself

How many times a day do you participate in activities you hope no one else knows about? Aspire to the freedom of being the same person in private that you are in public—unashamed at and unexposed by the Light.

“As I reflect on the moments that have grounded my faith and brought me the deepest, most lasting joy, many are connected to suffering — often through unanswered prayers, sleepless nights, and desperate tears. Yet in those dark places, God has always been there.” —Vaneetha Risner

If you are not increasingly grieved by your own sin, you are not growing as a Christian.

If you're going to believe the parts of the Bible that talk about the Savior's love, then you must also believe the parts that talk about His judgment against sin.

September 30 (Wednesday — Month's Close)

Dear Daughter,
September closes as every true harvest does — with a full barn and an empty field, both telling the same story of faithfulness.
You sowed, you were pruned, you bore fruit, you gathered. None of it was wasted.

Carry the storehouse into October; let the emptied field simply rest.

'While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest… shall not cease' (Gen 8:22).
What will you carry from this harvest season into whatever comes next?

5 Questions to Ask Before You Call Something "Biblical":

1. Does Scripture actually teach it? (2 Tim. 3:16)
2. Am I reading the verse in context? (2 Tim. 2:15)
3. Does my interpretation fit the rest of Scripture? (Acts 17:11)
4. Am I importing my preferences into the text? (Prov. 18:2)
5. Am I willing to change my mind if Scripture corrects me? (Isa. 66:2)

Don't make the Bible agree with you. Submit yourself to what the Bible says.

“Progressive Christianity” is usually code language for compromising on old sin.

Stick to Biblical Christianity.
