When we share the gospel with unsaved people, we understand intellectually that we are telling them how to find everlasting life. But the Bible wants us to fully realize what is happening. Look at the words used in Scripture: βLet him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sinsβ (James 5:20).

Lord, help us enjoy the gift without worshiping the gift.
Help us cherish the blessing without losing sight of the Blesser.
Let every good gift lead our hearts back to the One from whom every good and perfect gift comes. (James 1:17)

October 5: Words and Actions
#Devotional
Ezekiel 12:1β13:23; Revelation 3:14β4:11; Job 33:19β28
Leading by example is a simple principle to understand, but itβs a very difficult one to live. The prophets were often called to lead by example, though doing so usually meant enduring suffering for others.
βAnd the word of Yahweh came to me [Ezekiel], saying, βSon of man, you are dwelling in the midst of the house of rebellion who has eyes to see and they do not see; they have ears to hear, and they do not hear, for they are a house of rebellion. And you, son of man, prepare for yourself the baggage of an exile, and go into exile by day before their eyes. And you must go into exile from your place to another place before their eyes; perhaps they will see that they are a house of rebellionβ β (Ezek 12:1β3).
By witnessing Godβs servant suffering, the people would be reminded of their rebellion and understand the gravity of Godβs displeasure. In this situation, God prescribes exile as their punishment for rebelling against His requirements and forfeiting His calling for their lives. Godβs prophet, Ezekiel, βpronouncesβ Godβs punishment through actions. In doing so, he becomes a type of sufferer for the people. He does not deserve their punishment, and he does not pay it for them, but he demonstrates the price of sin as he leads by example.
There is a time for words and a time for action. We all would do well to heed the words before the actions become necessary. We must also understand that, in our desire to emulate Christ, there are times we must go beyond warnings or advice and commit to bearing the burden for othersβeven suffering undeservedly on their behalf. We must show others what it means to follow Christ by acting as Christ wouldβgiving unmerited grace even when it is costly.
What actions must you take today? In what areas must you move words to deeds? Who can you sacrifice for today?

October 5 - True Worship
#LifeOfChrist
The woman said to Him, βSir, I perceive that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.β Jesus said to her, βWoman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.β John 4:19β23
Having been convicted of her sin and need for forgiveness, and having repented and agreed with Jesusβ indictment, the Samaritan woman wondered where she should go to meet God and seek His grace and salvation.
Jesus explains that under the new covenant, the place of worship is not the issue, but rather the nature of worship. βAn hour is coming,β Jesus informed the woman, βand now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. βSpiritβ does not refer to the Holy Spirit but the human spirit. Worship must be internal, not externalβit must be from the heart. βTruthβ calls for this heart worship to be consistent with what Scripture teaches and to be centered on Christ.
True worshipers are those who βworship the Father in spirit and truth.β It is βsuch people the Father seeks to be His worshipersβ by sovereignly drawing them to Himself (6:44, 45). God has called you to worship Him. Make sure your worship is genuine.
Ask Yourself
What is so empty and uninspiring about worship that fails to engage the heart, worship that is mouthed and measured rather than done like you mean it? Then why do we resort to it so often? Why are we duped into believing that the object of our distraction is more worthy than the rightful recipient of our praise?
