Heavenly Father, help us to love ourselves less and instead to love You and to love our neighbors more. Give us hearts that are satisfied in You alone. Empty us of anything that displeases You. In Jesus' name, amen.

October 6: We Want Out
#Devotional
Ezekiel 14:1β15:8; Revelation 5:1β14; Job 33:29β33
Weβve all had those moments when we just want out, when the chaos of life seems overwhelming. We want an end to the struggle with sin. We want relief from the things that are part of living in a broken world. We know Christ reigns, but we want what is βafter these thingsβ (Rev 4:1) right now.
Living in the midst of persecution, the early believers must have experienced these emotions daily. In his revelation, John himself expresses the need for hope in chaos. When he sees a scroll in the hand of βthe one who is seated on the throneβ (Rev 5:1)βthe Fatherβthe apostle weeps because no one has been found worthy to open it. The scroll contains the things that will happenβthe judgments that will remove evil and sin and set things right. Without someone worthy enough to open the scrolls, the chaos in the world will continue forever.
But then the Lamb appears. In Johnβs revelation the 24 elders worship the Lamb for His work of redemption: βAnd they were singing a new song, saying, βYou are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slaughtered, and bought people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation, and made them a kingdom and priests to our Godβ β (Rev 5:9β10).
It is Christβs work that gives Him the authority to open the seals. As the Lamb who was slaughtered, He reversed death and the fate of those who believe in Him. He is responsible for setting all things right.
This knowledge is incredibly comforting for us. God is the great chaos-fighter. Jesus has drawn us out of our own chaos with His sacrifice. He will help us live in the nowβin a world that is often chaotic but will, in time, be set right. In the meantime, we can respond to His work of ordering our lives and the lives of those around us. And when we feel helpless and out of control, we can rely on the great chaos-fighter.
Are you frustrated with your life circumstances? How can you approach difficult areas of your life knowing God will set all things right? How can you rest knowing Christ is at work, right now, in your life?

October 6 - The True Nature of God and Worship
#LifeOfChrist
ββGod is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.β The woman said to Him, βI know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.β Jesus said to her, βI who speak to you am Heββ (John 4:24β26).
The phrase βGod is spiritβ is the classic biblical definition of the nature of God. Despite the heretical teaching of false cults, God is not an exalted man (Num. 23:19), βfor a spirit does not have flesh and bonesβ (Luke 24:39). He is βthe invisible Godβ (Col. 1:15), who βdwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can seeβ (1 Tim. 6:16). Had He not revealed Himself in Scripture and in Jesus Christ, God would be utterly incomprehensible.
Because God is spirit, those who would truly worship Him βmust worship in spirit and truth.β True worship does not consist of mere outward conformity to religious standards and duties; it springs from the inner spirit. It must also be consistent with the truth God has revealed about Himself in His Word. The extremes of dead orthodoxy (truth and no spirit) and zealous heterodoxy (spirit and no truth) must be avoided.
In spite of her confusion, the Samaritan woman expressed her hope that one day the Messiah would clarify all of these vexing religious questions. Imagine her surprise when the man who just a few minutes earlier had made a simple request for a drink of water claimed to be the long-awaited Messiah, and what He knew about her left her with no doubt about who He really was.
Ask Yourself
Why would Jesus spend so much time with this woman, letting her ask her guarded questions, waiting for her situation to be exposed, waiting to see the light come on? He didnβt always appear so patient and courteous, not with everyone. What can we learn from His treatment of her?

WEEK 2 β The Long Night & Watching (Oct 5β11)
5. October 5 (Monday)
Dear Daughter,
The watchman on the wall does not ask when dawn is coming β he simply stays awake until it does.
This week, be the watching spouse β praying, hoping, faithful β even without a timeline for the answer.
Watching is its own form of obedience.
'My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning' (Ps 130:6).
What have you been watching and praying for without a timeline?
