Narrated that Imam Ali (عليه السلام) said,

~ The Promise of Allah ~

Narrated from Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام), about the saying of Allah:

"Have you then considered if We let them enjoy themselves for years. Then there comes to them that with which they are promised/threatened." (26:205-206)

Imam (عليه السلام) said, "It is the rise of al-Qaim (عليه السلام)."

"That which they were made to enjoy shall not avail them." (26:207)

Imam (عليه السلام) said, "It is the Banu Umayyah, who were granted enjoyment in their worldly life."

~ What is our status near the Imam? ~

A man said to Imam al-Rida (عليه السلام),

"May I be sacrificed for you. What is the limit of reliance (on Allah) (tawakkul)?"

The Imam said, "To not fear anyone besides Allah."

The man said, "What is the limit/extent of humility?"

The Imam said, "To give to the people that which you would like to be given."

The man said, "May I be sacrificed for you! I would like to know – what is my position/status/importance near You?"

So, the Imam said, "Look at what is My position/status/importance/love in your view."

Narrated that Jabir al-Jofi asked Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام),

"When will Your relief (faraj) come?"

Imam (عليه السلام) responded,

"How far it is, how far it is. Our relief (faraj) will not come untill you are sieved/filtered and then sieved/filtered, the Imam said this 3 times, untill Allah (تعالى) removes the impure ones and leaves behind the pure ones."

Narrated that Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

"Allah (تعالى) will bring forth in this Ummah a man from me, and I am from him.

Through him, Allah (تعالى) will bring out the blessings of the heavens and the earth. The sky will send down its rain, the earth will bring forth its vegetation, the wild beasts and predatory animals will live in safety, and he will fill the earth with equity and justice just as it was filled with oppression and tyranny.

He will fight/kill [the enemies] to the extent that the ignorant person will say - 'If this person were from the progeny of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله), he would have shown mercy.'"

~ No Shirk in Khilafat ~

Narrated from Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) about the saying of Allah:

"So he should do good deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord (18:110)

The Imam said: 'The good deed' - is having recognition [Marefat] of the Imams.

'And do not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord' - is submission to Ali (عليه السلام), not associating along with him in the caliphate [khilfat] any one to whom it does not belong and who is not worthy of it.

"Firmest footing on the Bridge (Siraat) will be of those who have the strongest love for my AhlulBayt (ع)."

~ A Jew questions the Prophet (S) ~

Narrrated that Abu Abdillah Imam Jafar Sadiq (عليه السلام) said:

"Once a Jew came to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) and stood in front of him and was staring at him.

Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله) said, "O Jew, what do you need?"

The Jew replied, "Are you superior (the best) or Moosa bin Imran (ع), the one whom Allah spoke to, upon whom the Torah was revealed, [who was given] the staff, for whom the sea was split, and [whom] the clouds shaded."

The Prophet (ص) said, "It is not fitting for a servant to praise himself, but I say that:

When Adam (ع) committed the mistake he asked repentance by saying, "O Allah, I ask you by the right of Muhammad (ص) and the family of Muhammad (ع) that you forgive me." - And then Allah forgave him.

And when Noah (ع) boarded the ship and feared that the ship would drown he said, "O Allah, I ask you by the right of Muhammad (ص) and the family of Muhammad (ع) that you save me from drowning." - And then Allah saved him.

And when Ibrahim (ع) was thrown into the fire he said, "O Allah, I ask you by the right of Muhammad (ص) and the family of Muhammad (ع) that you save me from the fire." - And then Allah made the fire cool and safe for him.”

And when Moosa (ع) threw the stick and felt fear in his heart he said, "O Allah, I ask you by the right of Muhammad (ص) and the family of Muhammad (ع) to strengthen me from this fear." - And then Allah said to Moosa (ع), "Do not fear, for you are higher"

O Jew, If Moosa (ع) would reach my time and does not believe in Me (ص) and in My Prophethood then his faith and his Prophethood would be of no use (benefit) to him."

O Jew, and from my progeny is the Mahdi (عليه السلام); when he appears, Isa ibn Maryam will descend to assist him, and [Isa] will put him forward [to lead] and will pray behind him."

~ How to recite the Holy Quran ~

The narrator says, I asked Abu Abd Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) about the saying of Allah (عز وجل):

"And recite the Qur'an with measured recitation (tartil). (73:4)"

The Imam said, "Amir al-Mominin (عليه السلام) said:

Make it clear and distinct.

And do not rush through it as if reciting poetry [i.e. don’t recite it quickly/fast].

Don't scatter it like scattered sand [i.e. don’t recite without connection between words with long pauses].

But rather, put fear into your hardened hearts with it.

And let not the concern of any of you be the end of the surah [i.e. focus should not be to just complete the surah]

~ Making a believer happy ~

Narrated that Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

"Whoever brings joy/happiness to a believer, Allah (عز وجل) creates from that joy a creation that will meet him at the time of his death and says to him, "Be happy, O friend of Allah, with honor & pleasure from Allah."

That creation will remain with him until he is placed in his grave and will say the same thing to him.

When he is raised out of the grave the creature will meet him and will say the same thing to him.

Then that creation will continue to remain with him at every frightening occasion, giving him good tidings and saying to him the same thing.

Then the person will say to him, "Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?"

The creation will say, "I am the joy that you brought to so-and-so."

The below few words of Imam Ali (عليه السلام) sumup how one should look at the life in this world.

Imam Ali (عليه السلام) in a letter to Abdullah bin Abbas:

"Sometimes a man gets pleased at securing a thing which he was not going to miss at all and gets displeased at missing a thing which he would not in case get.

Your pleasure should be about what you secure in regards of your next life and your grief should be for what you miss in regards to your next life.

Do not be much pleased on what you secure from this world, nor get extremely grieved over what you miss out of it.

Your worry should be about what is to come after death."

The narrator says,

I asked Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام),

"What is the best deed after recognizing [the Imam]?"

The Imam replied,

"There is nothing after recognition that is equal to this prayer [Salat].
After recognition and prayer, there is nothing equal to zakat.
Then, after that, nothing is equal to fasting.
And after that, nothing is equal to the hajj pilgrimage.
And the beginning of all this is knowing us, and the end of it is knowing us."

Muhammad bin al-Hasan said, I wrote to Imam Hasan ibn Ali al-Askari (عليه السلام) complaining about poverty.

I (the narrator) then said to myself,

"Has not Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said that - Poverty while being with Us is better than wealth while being with our enemies and being killed along with Us is better than having a life along with our enemies"

The reply came from Imam Hasan Askari (عليه السلام),

"Indeed Allah (عز وجل) purifies our friends through poverty when their sins accumulate and surely Allah forgives many of the sins.

And it's like what you said to yourself, that poverty while being with Us is better than wealth while being with our enemies.

To have piety (Taqwa) before Allah (العظيم),

And that their rich among them should look after (help) their poor,

And that the living among them should attend the funeral of their dead,

O Khaysamah, convey to our followers that We do not benefit them from Allah with anything except through action/deeds, and that they will not attain Our Mastership (Wilayah) except by godliness/piety (wara), and that the most regretful of people on the Day of Judgement will be the one who described/praised justice and then opposed it."

In a long narration al-Fadhl bin Shazan gives reasons for different rulings in Islam:

Ali bin Qutaybah al-Nesaboori asks al-Fadl bin Shazan after hearing the reasonings from him,
"Inform me of these reasonings that you have mentioned, these are deductions (Istinbaat) and extractions (Istikhraaj) and these are results of the mind or are they what you have heard and narrated?"

al-Fadl bin Shazan said, "I did not know of the intention of Allah (عز وجل) regarding what he obligated, nor do I know the intention of Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وأله) regarding the laws (Shariah) He made and Sunnah He established, nor do I know the reasons for those from my own-self, but I have heard them from my Master Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Musa Rida (عليه السلام) at different times one after the other, then I have collected them."

Narrated from Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Ubayd, who said: Abu al-Hasan al-Ridha (عليه السلام) said to me:

"What would you say if you were asked: 'Tell me about Allah—is He a 'thing' [shay] or not?'"

I replied, "Allah (عز وجل) has affirmed that He is a 'thing' by stating - 'Say: What thing is the greatest witness? Say: Allah is a witness between me and you.' (6:19)

Therefore, I say: He is a 'thing,' but not like other 'things'—for to deny that He is a 'thing' would be to negate and nullify His very existence."

The Imam said to me, "You have spoken truly and correctly."

Then Imam al-Rida (عليه السلام) said:

"Regarding the doctrine of Divine Unity [tawhid], people hold three beliefs: negation, tashbih [ascribing human qualities to God], and affirmation [of Allah's existence] without Tashbih.

The position of negation is impermissible, and the position of Tashbih [ascribing human qualities to God] is likewise impermissible—for nothing resembles Allah (تبارك وتعالى). The correct path is the third one: affirmation [of Allah's existence] without Tashbih."

Narrated from Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام), regarding the saying of the Mighty and Majestic [Allah]:

'Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of people have earned (30:41)."

The Imam said: "By Allah, that was when the Ansar said: 'A leader from us and a leader from you *."
